A lot of people have tics of different sorts that can be controlled with concious effort (maybe even everyone has this to some degree). This is a sign that he is focusing his effort on the armwrestling. You can see the same with many athletes and musicians etc. Once they are in the zone, they will have little idiosyncrasies like that.
