I saw and Heard this from Elvis and the boys back in 1980 at the Agora on High Street on The Ohio State Campus!!! This was on their Play list that night! Elvis and The Boys were on fire that night too as The Agora held maybe 2500 at the time and they played like they were in Shea Stadium. Bruce Thomas is one of those whose work is instantly noticeable when heard but is nameless to many! On a side note, a couple of years after I had seen them play they returned to Columbus to play and after the show the story goes that Elvis was a "bit loaded" and was approached by probably over zealous and equally "loaded" fans at a late night eatery. The end result was a Bruhaha and the next morning on the local news the story was front and center. Now we ALL know Elvis is not the biggest guy walking around and he looked to have taken the bad end of a scrum. That is my Elvis Story and pretty sure he was NOT say Thank you...thank you Very Much. LOLOL Great share as always Troy! Cheers From Ohio p.s.......That riff @12:36 reminded me of The Beatle's ending on "You Never Give Me Your Money" !!

For me, the high water mark and apex of creativity for EC and The Attractions was Armed Forces and the follow up album in 1980, Get Happy! Secondary Modern (off of Get Happy!) has a terrific Bruce Thomas bass line and I hope you give it a try. Then again, a close listen to Bruce's work on most every Costello song is a real gem. A fantastic bass player, who like Dee Murray with Elton John, are top tier bass players who don't collect the accolades they deserved back in the day. As usual, great work!!!

Woody C/Deeshbass here. That was fabbbbbbbbbbbbbulous!!! ❤️🤘 That bass sounds really great in the high register. (And the mids,and the lows) 😁 Love it….always a favorite song among the many,many favorites by EC&The Attractions . I love the way they, shall we say, “quote” that Beatles chord sequence in the outro, too. Makes me feel like they were as big a fan of that as I was.🥰
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion Woody! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I'm still very much enjoying the bass. You're right about The Beatles thing at the end of the song. I forgot to mention that. I can't remember the song but it's the one where they count to 7 and sing a nursery rhyme or something like that, right?
@DeeshBassChannel3 жыл бұрын
Troy-yep! 😁 It’s toward the end of “you never give me your money”. Sir Paul is doing quite a fretboard flurry in the upper-registers on that outro, too.

One of the things that always stands out for me with Bruce Thomas is his use of chromaticism and how he employs it in a way that it still sounds very melodic. The two bridge sections in the song are a great example - especially the way the slides to the octave E and A are used to punctuate the chromatic movement. Also, that ritardando is definitely something you can't do with a click track. Thanks Troy for another great bassline!

Is Bruce a genius or what? Just listen to this bassline. Troy, is it just me, or the two basses (yours and Bruce's) don't seem to be in the same pitch in the high notes? Maybe a wrong setup in his bass? Because the lower notes seem fine. This doesn't get in the way, though. Wonderful job. Have a great Sunday.
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Tell me about it. I noticed that the tuning was slightly off a bit on the higher notes. My intonation is correct, so I don't have a good explanation for it. Sometimes these things happen. Thanks and take care, Igor!
@tommythevenot76172 жыл бұрын
Bruce should earn royalties on songs like this. Don’t you feel that way? He wrote so many great bass lines that made Costello’s songs so much better. Some of those songs weren’t much without the bass parts. Yet BT doesn’t get any songwriting credits. I just don’t understand how the music industry does this.
