2009 Preakness Stakes

Calvin Borel made the right choice and history was made May 16 at Pimlico, when for the first time the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner not only ran in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) but won the race in convincing fashion. Rachel Alexandra won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown by a length over Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Mine That Bird.
The week following her win in the Oaks, Rachel Alexandra was purchased by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick and transferred from trainer Hal Wiggins to Steve Asmussen. Borel, who had ridden both Rachel Alexandra in the Oaks and Mine That Bird in the Derby, was asked to continue riding the filly and he agreed.
Mine That Bird's trainer, Chip Woolley, picked up Mike Smith on the Derby winner.

Easy to tell the diiference for Mine That Bird in the Derby and Stakes, Jockey rode him perfect in the Derby and had tons of luck, Jockey made terrible errors and had no luck in the Stakes. His final stretch kick was there, but by the time it could be used it was too late. To try and use a late run on the inside again was never going to work, should have just let him run wide and see if he made it, my guess is he would have. A truly amazing kick on that horse.

'09 Preakness Stakes entries... EVERY Thoroughbred is a decedent of Northern Dancer. Well except the Big Drama The 'Dancers stud fee started at $10,000 fee in 1965 for alive foal. When he retired at the age of 26 (1987) mare owners paid $1 million for a breeding, without any guarantee. Unheard of even today, more then 30 years later. Today the question is not if a race horse has Northern Dancer in its pedigree, but if does NOT have it. He has sired a total of 146 stakes winners. The 'Dancer "The WORLD'S Sire of Sires!!!

If you don't have the talent to carve your own trip from the front.. then you take what's given to you.. mike was denied the rail, everyone stayed on it unlike the derby which is also was another 1/16 in distance. Also rachael did not handle the track well and still destroyed them. Improve your prospective son.

Rachel Alexander The Great!..R.A.T.G!.. this version of rachael is truly the best and horse of the year bar none!.. I remember the cry babies in Zenyatta camp that year complaining about we were robbed!..YEAH RIGHT! It was plain to everyone in the country that this campaign by Rachael was leading in the votes and sentiments and Zenyatta had to ship to meet her ,the camp had their chance and was scared that Zenyatta would have been beaten. Zenyatta's BC Classic win was the best win on the 09' resumes of either her or Rachel. But if forced to chose I would have to agree that Rachel's 09' campaign was better than the campaign Zenyatta put together that year or in any other year. However, taken collectively, Zenyatta's Horse of the Year 2010 campaign along with her HoY runner-up campaigns of 08' and 09' are superior to Rachel's single year masterpiece. In short, between the two great female stars, Zenyatta owned the singular performance and/or accomplishment with her 09 BC Classic(and I can argue the 2nd best performance between them was Zenyatta's BC Classic 2nd in 2010, Rachel' 09 was the single best year either one had, and that Zenyatta has the more complete career.

Zenyatta owners denied the public of one of the best showdown in racing history by dodging rachael... however he shipped to try and win the classic agaisnt blame... which blame had the better year against better competition and got the best of her( favouritism got her h.o.y over a horse that beat her) Zenyatta could not run that way against super talent like rachael and beat her... she would need distance help to catch her.

In her Prime She had too Much Speed and Talent over Zenyatta...She also had better Numbers than Zenyatta....Just do not see any way Zenyatta would have been able to catch and reel in Rachel....And if Rachel had a comfortable Trip she probably "effortlessly" holds off Zenyatta with energy left in the tank

Calvin himself said that he would've felt confident on RA in the Derby against the colts, Bird included in that lineup. Only one person in the world rode both of those horses and come decision time, he went with the better of them. Jockeys gotta make a living too
