Get the supplies and parts for your Honda Goldwing air filter change: bit.ly/gold-win...
Learn how to change the air filter on a Honda Goldwing GL1800. On many motorcycles, changing the air filter is a fairly easy job. Because of the shelter assembly built up on this motorcycle, changing the air filter on a Honda Goldwing is more difficult. John will show you how to dig down to the air filter and replace it, and the process starts by removing the seat. Then, John will guide you through the process of disconnecting the side panels, instruments, and the rest of the shelter assembly to reach the ECU. After the ECU is moved, you can access the air filter. From there, the process is familiar, you’ll just remove the old air filter, replace it with a new one, and then close the air box.
Then you’ll reverse the process to get the Goldwing back together again. Below is a link to a useful diagram that will show you how all the parts fit together:

Evidently Honda didn't think it was hard enough. I had an '02 and taking the top shelter off (like this video) was EASY. Try doing a 2012+ sometime. 3 hours in and I STILL can't find the mystery fasteners holding it on yet. Arragh!!!

Easy as pie only looks difficult because of all the wiring of the electronics. I think most people that try this will be surprised how easy it is. It’s only a couple bolts and if you think you’d have a hard time figuring out which plug goes where when putting it together just get a pack of multicolored tape rolls and tape same color to each end of the plugs and it’s easy to match them up after.

Looks like an absolute nightmare, but it needs to be done. There are just way too many opportunities to break something for what should be a much simpler replacement method. I may be tackling this during the upcoming weekend when we are expected to have 40-degree temps. That's a good time for motorcycle maintenance! Thanks for the great demonstration of the process. I'm not looking forward to it, but it is what it is.

Great video! Just finished dropping the new filter and the cover back in place last night, will reassemble today. Would like to note that on my non-ABS 2009, I did not need to flip stuff over to the right to access the air cleaner cover. Wiring, ECU box & cruise assembly all pulled up far enough to easily remove the cover and filter to the left. Not a bad job really, but holy crap there is a lot of wiring on a GL.....

Mr. Talley, Thank you again for allowing me to save money. You saved me with your instructions on my fork seal replacement. Now the filter change to save money again. It was not hard but the finesse getting it back together made it take a good amount of time longer than a pro. All eventually came together with a couple of screws to the “abyss” I ordered some replacements. Thank you!

Just finished changing my filter for the first time since owning my 02 wing. I have been putting it off since all I’ve read was how horrible of a job it was. It took me about 4 hours but more than half that time was spent shooting the crap with my neighbor. Pretty easy if you keep up with where the bolts go.

I am flabbergasted. This honestly makes changing an engine look simple..I was a Honda motorcycle mechanic in the 70s. I could literally have the engine out of a CB 350 twin out of the frame and have the camshaft, (which were junk), out of the engine in under 50 minutes.. changing this air filter has more steps. And in addition to there being more steps, this job is scary because there are a lot of hidden plastic tabs.. This is an excellent instructional video. I just bought my very first 1800 gold when used, and whenever I buy a used motorcycle, I change everything from brake fluid to spark plugs.. motorcycles don’t wear out, they get neglected to death. The Gold Wing I just bought is a 2002 with only 13,000 miles on it. The date today is 10-2019. The original owner said he never had the air cleaner changed. I wonder how many mice I will find in there I would like to hear suggestions from Gold Wing honors, whether I should use the standard Honda air filter element, a HIFLO aftermarket air filter element, or go for the big bucks washable K &N Standard filter replacement. I have a Honda pacific coast that I have used for commuting for 24 years. I put a washable K &N Air filter in my PC 24 years ago, and I am happy with it still. The PC air filter element style appears to be identical to the one in this Gold Wing.. Any Gold Wing riders have any experience with different air filters in there 1800 wings?

Another great video! I've changed dozens of these and I still think Honda built the bike around the air filter! My current 'Wing is a '13 Airbag model so I have that to contend with that too. Insane that Honda would make something so inexpensive and vital so difficult to perform. Sure, it forces people to take it to Honda to have it done but 4 hours for an air filter change and the freaking $300 reflects negatively on Honda in the long run. And ultimately , we as consumers don't rely on Honda, but Honda does rely on us. After two gold wings I went to Yamaha. Love the switch.

Thank you very much for the detailed instructions how to replace the air filter. This is the best video I have found on the KZbin. This video convinced me to do it myself instead of taking it to a bike shop. I can imagine how many screws would be missing and parts not sitting in their place. I just wonder, why Honda had to place it so deep in the bike?! Doesn't make any sense. Prior to my 2008 GL-1800 I had a 2003 Voyager XII. I could replace the filter in 10 minutes.

Thanks for the video! I watched it about 4 times over a few weeks, really saw its only following instructions, .. Still, very anxious to do this i began this morning after a cup of coffee and i'm now completed, 945am. I am NOT very good at working on cars/bikes and I did it. Just take one thing at a time. Nothing about this is really more complicated than unplugging a cable or unscrewing a bolt. Now i'm much more familiar with how the top of the bike goes together, there is no magic or fiddling, very straight forward. Not sure how a shop who's done this before can charge over 1hr of labor, next time i do it will probably be 45 minutes or less. Need to add, there was a gasket around the filter when i removed it, (not shown in video) i put the gasket in the air cover and then slid the filter on the cover and put them all on together. May be a bit easier. I put a little air tool oil on the gasket to keep it from dissolving/cracking.

It's not a difficult job, just an involved one. Hardest part is keeping track of which fasteners go where. Make up some cardboard cutouts and push the plugs into the cardboard in the same fashion as the original. Other than that, once you have done it once, it's easy to do again. Be sure to put the templates away for the next time. Second time around is very easy but no less involved, but still a couple of hours work. But don't neglect it; your beautiful Wing deserves better. And when you feel you need to curse the job, curse the design engineers who must have been drunk the day they did their job....

Don't be afraid to use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush on the filter housing followed by the nozzle all around, before opening, and then on the filter, before you remove it. This will minimize debris. Obviously if debris does fall into the airbox you want to vac that out, including the intake ports at the bottom. No harm in wiping up the oil from the PCV with a paper towel either.

Removing and reconnecting the lower vent control cable can be a pain in the butt. I saw a jump cut in the video. 14:46 . I have found its much better to remove the whole lever assembly with the cable still connected. Pull off the lever's knob and click off the cover plate that says open and close. Under that there is only one screw to remove. Removing it as an assembly doesn't put a nasty kink in the cable.

Holy BatCrap. I always work on my own stuff, have lift, three rollways, special tools, etc. Own BMW, Hayabusa, and Harley now. I WAS considering getting a nice low mileage wing for some road trips, but after watching this I wouldn't even consider owning one! A major deconstruction just to change a friggin air filter??? I thought the oil change on the Hayabusa was a pain in the rear! There' no doubt in my mind that people run those air filters forever, and that dealers probably just charge for changing them instead of risking introducing electrical glitches from mechanics slip ups! Nope, I don't care how good the Goldwing is on the hwy, not getting one of those! Maybe I'll just buy one for a long trip and then sell it before I put a wrench or screwdriver near it!

It's really the same except the radio module is in the left side and the airbag sets on top of everything under the shelter, the computer module is upright on the left under the airbag. Air bag is actually easy to remove, just pay attention to the way the straps fold and lay down under the shelter. Tape the foot warmer doors shut before removing the cables and it's easier. Also the connection that gets forgotten the most is the small wire connecting to the top of the airbox. If you have a mouse nest in the airbox, cut the screens off the old filter and use them over the ends of the air snorkels going to the airbox to make it harder to get in.

Like the old car heater core joke: The factory magically suspends the heater core in thin air and builds the car around it! In the time it takes to do that air cleaner replacement I can put a new clutch in my BMW GS, and read War and Peace...

This is the TRUTH. Almost every job on almost every bike, we think, "hey, at least it ain't the Goldwing."

I figure I'll have to change mine next year. If I watch the video about 100 time between now and then, I should be OK.

To this day, when we run across a complex job, someone always says "At least it's not the air filter on the Goldwing." Take your time, keep track of your parts, and check out our diagrams if you need more hints: www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle

Just got my 06, and I just changed the filter. Now, the abs light is on, and there is no sound on the radio. What a headache! I've got to take it apart again.

Holy crap! My bike would never run again if I took this on. How often is supposed to be done? Is it OK to wait for the scheduled 25K (or is it 20K) mile service?

I was cracking up at your comment. Watch Max McAlister's video on filter changes he said you can go 100,000 miles that no Goldwing has ever blown up because the filter wasn't changed👍

You don't have yo unplug the ecm and the cruise control . There are only two connections you need to unplug and you can move the whole assembly to the side

The air filter is the most involved service item but everything else is quick and easy. Beware Goldwing riders I don't know how the 2012+ models are but the F6B riders have to open the bags to remove the side panels, otherwise you will cause damage.

I am having trouble finding a how-to with the airbag model. A little worried about starting mine with the airbag, 2014 for me Canadian model in case it makes a difference. Obvious risk with airbag model and accidentally causing it to deploy.

Went to reassemble and I have a large female connecter near the right pocket (near radiator cap) I can’t find where the mating half is. I suspect it might have been empty all along, but I’m not sure. Anyone know what it is?

@@PartzillaParts thanks very much for your video - it helped a lot! I did the job in ~3.5-4 hours, and went pretty smooth. A couple of takeaways - the hardest parts were separating the connectors which were really tight, and then getting the airbox cover back on without moving the filter out of the groove. That bit took a while, but patience was my friend. Many thanks again for your extremely helpful video.

@@peteleare1372 I’m doing mine now. Those Connectors are a PITA! I’m also replacing my steering head bearings and fork seals. Dealer charges $1300 just for labor😳 That’s money I can spend on fuel and miles of smiles👍
