Welcome back to episode 2 of a NEW series on Pas de Deux in ballet! My fiancé Christopher Sellars is going to take you through 4 episodes of very basic but in-depth partnering tips. Pas de deux work was his specialty as a dancer, and he is a BRILLIANT teacher and coach. This episode is all about partnered pirouettes. Chris takes your through the hand positions, stance, basic feeling, and how to do multiple turns. Please be careful but enjoy!
*Attempt partnering at your own risk. Not suited for dancers under the age of 12. Women should have been on pointe for over 2 years.

Hi Kathryn. I love your channel. Even though I do not dance anymore my feet are always turned out. I love ballet. I think as a young child it was bred into me. I am in my late 50's and still can watch ballet all day everyday. I started watching Josephine and love her. I still know the five techniques of them. First and all the way up to fifth. I will never forget my teacher either. Her name was Miss Linda. Chris's technique on the Pas de Deux is amazing. I wanted so much to be a Principle but never got the chance. I was thrown from my horse and had a broken knee cap so I had multiple surgeries. Not fun.Thank you so much for sharing and enjoy you day🤗❤🐰🐇🐾🐣🐤🐥🩰🩰

This was totally fascinating! I took ballet for 15 years when I was younger and did pointe work but we never did partnering in my program, so I never really understood what exactly goes into proper partnering technique. And Chris is such a good teacher, I watched the whole thing lol

I'm not a dancer, so I only see the finished product of all this technique most of the time. It's pretty fascinating. Pas de deux (or how I like to affectionately pronounce it, pasta dough 😁) is my favorite part of classical ballet, I often find myself watching the partner work more than the ballerina. So fun to see the BTS of this beautiful art ❤

What happens if someone has legs that make for a passé that is wider than the supporting partner's arms are long? Is there a good workaround if that happens? Do you have the passé either more turned in or maybe drop the toe to a lower point or maybe overcross the passé a little? Does the supporting partner lean in a little (which seems bad and dangerous, because elbows, if no other reason) or scoot legs or bum out a bit? Or...? Find a partner with longer arms/shorter legs (depending on perspective)? 😜 I just think getting kneed can't be very comfortable and certainly isn't clean and graceful technique...

You could lower the passe or the guy could stick out his hips a little behind him (you can't see it from the audience). Usually, partners are based on height so this should be a major shift for either partner. But accidents are definitely bound to happen!

I'm curious why the female dancer on the right is standing with her leg out and toe down during the beginning of the video. Is that something dancers are taught to do? I'm a non dancer, so maybe this is obvious to other people.

It's just a comfortable rest position. It just feels nice for a dancer to put her foot en pointe in rest
