Jim Hall takes us for a walk around his Pasacana section of Cactus Country. The plants he shows us are of seed that he collected and raised himself from one of the large pasacana's he has growing in the older section of the garden. As described earlier, bees have been doing an enormous amount of cross pollinating, and as a result, these plants with very unusual characteristics are coming into being.

The first one looks a little like a terscheckii with long spines, but I have seen some growing this way already. That’s great; we have been waiting many years for ours to produce some fruit, but nothing yet. We get lots of flowers and I collect the terscheckii fruit several times a year. Unfortunately, the taller plants are usually headed down the road, but a few of ours are very tall and furry. We just completed an order to the DBG for about forty young pasacana and several other cacti, for a spine growth study, BTW. Wow, the red and yellow flowers look awesome! Thanks for sending.

You could be right with the tersheckii. There is such an enormous diversity of genes in this garden that many different characteristics seem to show up in the plants.

I just purchased a seedling open pollinated Pasacana. I may never see it flower, as it will keep getting potted on as it grows into around a two meter tall plant. It remains to be seen what characteristics it has. I have many other trichocereus. PC Pach., Spachinaus, Scopulicola, Bridgesii and different crosses, including some monstrose forms. I love these columnar cacti. These large in ground specimens are awesome to see.

Very good! The pasacana is a very good cactus because of the shape with trunk and arms, and the strong spination, be it long and hard, or later long, soft, and white in some. The negative characteristics are: soooo slow, and flowers 'only' white. Hybrids like the ones that you have made are a good direction to try and improve them. But you need space and time for this work. Have you done some controlled crossings?

I'm not sure if you will reply to this, but I am trying to germinate these from seed under a grow light and heat, I sowed them March 29th 2018 and still there is no germination. Do you have any advice?

What size will Pasacana flower? I have a chunker around 20 inches.

I wouldn’t expect most pasacana’s to flower before 1.5 to 2 meters tall. Some of these hybrids that Jim has grown did flower at smaller sizes

@@paulnsara thanks for the information, would that apply to Terscheckii too? Have a similar one also and want a flower so bad.

Wow, you sound close. I regularly hit up Home Depot and Lowe's all over Mesa. For a real treat, try Shady Way Gardens in Apache Junction. University East of Ironwood on the North side. Unmatched collection of cacti for sale. I've been shopping there for 20 years. Happy New Year 2016! Keith

Not sure about Pascana but Terescheckii does. Small amounts though so hardly worth growing for that purpose or murdering one of these beasts.
