My Premier Project Plans: paskmakes.com/premier-project...
My Free Plans: paskmakes.com/free-plans/
This was a quick video thrown together as I've had something else to deal with this week and not much time to make a Scrapwood Challenge video. I made one first out of plywood just to see how it would go and that one flew better. This boomerang came out nice though (I had my doubts when I glued it up) and I'm sure with some fine tuning (I ran out of time) it will work just as well!
Using quarter inch plywood would be a much easier way to make one but I had to make one using the scrapwood and this seemed to be the best way of doing so!
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Hey pask great work love your videos. I was wondering think you could make a archery recurve bow with scraps? I only got the idea from seeing you make the ply for this just wondering if it would be possible?
@Zogg1281
@Zogg1281 5 жыл бұрын
@@billroache6244 A bow would be an awesome project, but with the lengths of wood available, in the scrapwood pile, no matter how you stagger the strips with the forces placed on a full size bow I think it would have a very, very short life expectancy. It might just be possible to make the 3 sections of a take down recurve bow out of the longest pieces but it would be a very short bow

1/4 is much too thick. I have noticed mine fly fine but when they get sealer or paint the extra weight is far too much. I would plane to 5/16 before finish

I could never make a boomerang work when I was a kid. Was reading one of my father's Popular Mechanics and they had an article on how to make a boomerang. Found out that all store bought 'rangs (at least at that time) were right-handed and I'm left. I was about 10 or 11 at the time. Found some plywood and made a lefty. It was great. Thanks for reminding me of the fun I had and thanks for popsting.

40 years ago my older brother went to Hawaii for some High School music thing, and he brought back my younger brother and I these small "triangle"-shaped boomerangs made out of seemingly hand carved Monkey Wood or something. (several inches in length, well less than a foot -- not the weird-shaped UFO style like in this video) They must have been made by a master boomerang maker, because they were the best boomerangs I have ever seen or used. I've tried to find one like it for decades and have never been able to replace it. Not even close. We eventually lost them. One on top of a mobile home in a park we used to throw them way out over and one in a fig tree where we couldn't find it. You could throw them half a football field away and they would circle back and you could catch them. They were really excellent boomerangs. (now I wish we would have climbed up on the mobile home for the one and looked harder for the one in the tree)

I made several boomerangs from a book but the one that worked best was my own design. It was a plywood ring with 3 short blades sticking out with power sanded airfoil cross sections, a little brute force 'trihedral' bend upwards on each and a little bit of upward angle of attack built in during sanding. It was very reliable with about half the range of the one in the video. It was easy to catch by reaching up through the middle as it finished its circuit by hovering down to me. The major flaw was the 3 blades had different ply directions and the upward bends wouldn't hold for long. They kept flattening back to the plane of the ring and it tried, but didn't have the momentum to complete the larger diameter path it took. Now I should duplicate it with identical blades glued in with the proper up angle built in at the bases of the blades.

Watching this in early April, 2020. I began following your youtube channel a few months ago. I imagine the smells of wood as you cut and shape those pieces. Your furniture pieces are very lovely; they let the beauty of the wood shine through. Regarding the boomerang, even if it doesn't come all the way back to you, it's still better than jogging 50 meters to fetch it back! Greetings from Florida! Hope you and your loved ones are holding up well. Stay safe!

That was great (seeing it raining somewhere else I mean...) It's a few years since but I've made a few 'rangs - never saw one made up from plys like that. I loved it! I think your leading edges are a wee bit 'blunt' - as you say, a bit of fine tuning. Also 'rangs are like people - they have funny moods and respond to perseverance. Thanks for that mate, really enjoyed it.

Great work with the material. Some tips from a shaper: never let the tail edge sharp. Always leave a little "wall". That will improve. Theres also a ratio you can manage with size and thickness. Thst type of plywood i would recommend 3 or 4 winged designs. Will fly closer but better. And also you need to tune the wings. Puta the rang in a flat table and check the angles and if wings are upwards. Use vapor from a teakettle to bend it if necessary. If you didnt do it, also check the natural bend of the strips before glueing. Mark the top on them. That will make your boomerang always with positive dihedral. Cheers
