I learned courtesy in the dojo in 1962. Today I learned survival, thanks Matt.

At 82 I just got interested in cane techniques but I’ve a long way to go. Arthritis figures in so I need to mainly develop grip strength and overall mobility. My initial attempts at spinning are pathetic at best. Just ordered a cane master dojo training cane in hickory and see where that leads. I’ve enjoyed your video postings the past couple weeks and the cane I have now has a small radius crook,to small for my hand. Thanks for your videos.

Excellent. I call it your six inch punch. Your hand/ cane is never swung in a wide "away from the body swing", the cane is basically in front of your body all the time and you are using "short" powerful strikes... the thrust is no longer than 6 to 9 inches... boom the perp ain't going nowhere but down...thx Matt

I'm from QUEBEC CITY, i'm 62 and i use my cane for mobility but also to keep me in shape and ready, by practicing self defense moves for 30 minutes each day. I'm no martial artist, i just feel that, even if i'm geting older, i can protect my family, just by showing to a thug that i'm ready to defend. No fancy moves, no katas, no complicated stuff. Here in my city, we form a brotherhood of cane users, who decide to put aside useless pride and keep standing straight and proud to be there, to calm down too energised people... (sorry for my bad english). Keep caning !

Great material on the cane today Matt! I remember picking up a cane when I first started with combat martial arts in 4th grade and I always thought the cane would be a great weapon, even as a child. It's great to incorporate the cane here and now! Love this!

I am 75 too. That gentleman was right about the moving and combat spinning. Some times it is a problem just getting out of a chair. I have the Cane Master Quantum tactical trainer cane and love it. An exercise I do watching tv is to hold the crook in my left hand an rubber tip in the right. Release the left hand and rotate the rubber tip end to the right till cane is parallel to the floor. Rotate tip end back to left hand and rotate to the left and back. Rotate left and right and your wrist and forearm get a good work out just watching tv.

Two handed techniques are my personal favorite. Two hands let’s you really but your entire body into strikes. Also there is less chance to drop or have cane bounce out of hand on impact. Great instruction.

For the best technique, I think the knuckle/crook/hook. I think the quickest is that initial thrust, so it could be argued that's the best. But if I'm thinking of trauma.... the crook. Just my opinion 😃 love all ya in the community!

I believe the old FAST REPETITIVE bayonet thrusting technique with good stance is a superior technique. And it provides the best positive control, as well..

Where did you get the cane with the edges

When I was in Law Enforcement I trained with a riot baton and have used that trining technique with my cane at 76 years old I use a cane to walk with.

I thought slashing strikes were ineffective for a metal baton? So why are they effective for a cane?
@pasquinilli2 жыл бұрын
Big difference in weight. The metal baton is too light. A solid hickory or oak self defense cane will hit dramatically harder. Great question thank you. Also, I still prefer thrusts over all other strikes with any cane or other stick for self defense.

Thank you! I'm slow, but I'm catching up. I've had a rough week, but I got back to the swinging clubs this morning. Because of my weight, 260 to 270 pounds, I tend to think of a thrust as my best first move in most situations. If I can put the tip of the cane accurately in the center of an attacker's body and get even a small step forward, my weight and momentum will have an impact on the attacker. Even if I miss the solar plexus and hit the sternum, I might be able to push the attacker backwards. If the attacker loses balance and falls, he might decide that he doesn't really want to mess with me after all. That solves the problem. If I ever have to use this, I'm about 70% certain that the thrust will be my first move.

Great presentation and you gave me several ideas for cane defense. You went off onto miscellany several times. It does pay to review and edit your video. Had you done so, your time of 34:40 could have been shortened. I don't need to be entertained.
