Superb video, thank you. I'm doing my YM theory course at the moment and you explain things so much better than them!

I've created PDF templates for passage planning, pilotage, and pre-departure safety & daily engine checks. If you might find them useful, you can download them on my website. They are dynamic (i.e. you can fill them in electronically or print them off and and fill them in by hand). If you buy the set of three, they are less than £3 each, or subscribe and receive an email with a 30% discount code. www.freesailingtutorials.com/

I want to do the course for the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate. I don't live nor sail in tidal waters and have only some basic knowledge of how to plan a passage through tides. How much of this is taught in the RYA course and how much of the knowledge should I have under my belt before attempting the course and examination?

Hi. The YM course is split. There is a theory course, which is an intense, full time course covering everything from yacht stability, IRPCS, tides, currents, weather, radar, etc. Then, once you have passed that, you need to undertake an external assessment on board a yacht. This can take between a day and two, dependent on how many candidates are on board. The MINIMUM experience to take the assessment is 2,500 miles of which 1,250 must be coastal and 5 passages of over 60 nm of which 3 (I think) need to be as you skippering. You must also have a first aid certificate. I'lm doing a video on exactly this to be released next week - so good timing!

@@FreeSailingTutorials Thank you. I'm planning on taking on the theoretical course next year during winter and go for a one week practical course with an exam during in the spring. The milage and night passages are not a problem. I've already done 3 of those last week. I also have the first aid certification and sea survival certification. I'm just worried about the things you show on your channel. In my country the passage planning and pilot planning are roughly mentioned and it seems I need to get into a habit of doing it the way you are showing how to do it. I guess it's just planning theoretical passages for the next few months to get ready. Thank you for your channel and the content you are sharing. This is helping a lot!

@@SCBiscuit13 Glad it helps. The theory will cover all of this. Keep your eyes open for the video on this - coming up soon.
