Hey guys ! We have a really special song and video for you today - special for me at least …. For a number of reasons …. The song is called “to be free” and it tells the story of my dad and his family . Ziggy (my grandad) was German and Molly (my grandmother) was polish . They were both jewish and living in Germany when the second world war was about to begin . Luckily they managed to escape to a refugee camp in France where they spent the duration of the war . Once the war was over they , like so many other jewish refugees , left Europe for America . They ended up running a chicken farm in New Jersey in a town called Vineland which is where my dad and his siblings grew up . Needless to say with very little money and so much trauma it was an extremely difficult childhood for them . My dad left Vineland as a teenager and went on to travel the world before finally ending up in England . As I was growing up I heard snippets about their ordeal although understandably it wasn’t something that people wanted to talk about in any detail . Over the years I’ve pieced together a rough idea of what they went through and just how appalling and terribly sad the whole thing was . Its something that I never thought I’d write a song about . Its such a delicate story that subconsciously I feel I’ve always steered clear of telling it . However , whilst on holiday towards the end of last year I picked up my guitar and started playing . These lyrics came to me and all of a sudden I realised what song I was writing . Im not ashamed to say that I wrote and sang and cried as the song tumbled out of me . I’ve never had an experience like it . It came from such a deep place and it was a bizarre feeling to be pulling it out and putting it in to a song . For the video , it felt only write that we go back to New Jersey to film it . We chose a little beach town called Avalon . Its a place that I went to many times as I was growing up as my aunt and uncle owned a little beach house there . I hadn’t been there in over ten years and honestly I didn’t have much of an idea of what the video should be - I just felt like it was the right place . A few days before filming it we were in New York and hanging out with Emily - a friend of Jarrad Seng photography who happens to be a world class ballet dancer (as you will see) we told her our plans (or lack there of) and she unbelievably kindly offered to choreograph something . I can’t thank her enough . Not only did she give up her time , drive over to Avalon and dance on a freezing cold beach for hours but she managed to portray such beauty and somehow capture the essence of the song perfectly . An unbelievable talent and a kindness that I will never forget . Thank you Emily xxx I’d like to dedicate this song and video to anybody who has gone through or is going through a similar situation . For anyone that has been displaced . For anyone living in a new country , learning new customs and language . America , like so many other countries , was built on immigration . Never has it been so important to remember and celebrate this fact . Thank you for your time and I really hope you enjoy the video . Mike x p.s a massive thanks as always to Jarrad Seng . What an incredible job to capture this in one take ….. unbelievable !!

Mike I am touched by your deep sense of compassion for people with whom you have such a close connection, sharing their suffering. How we deal with hardship is often what makes a person beautiful and inspiring, and you certainly manage that. So thank you If only you could wave your wand at this dangerous time and inspire everyone to pull together, to go out of their way to make sure that they do whatever is possible to do no harm to our fellow human beings by passing on the dreadful virus... I wonder if a song could pull at the heart strings of enough people to make that difference

She dances every step for a reason. Some get washed away by the ocean that is bigger then her, but others are imprinted in the sand far from the reach of waves staying forever. Nevertheless she dances not bothered whether she leaves a mark or not. but simply cause she loves it. This is the way life should be lived .

This is so relatable for anyone who has immigrant ancestors. My grandparents left war-torn Northern Greece after the Second World War. When my Papou(grandfather) arrived in New York, he didn't know any English; he had only a second-grade education because he was a shepherd. He arrived in New York and took a train to Ohio, where his Uncle, who sponsored him, lived. He asked the conductor, "Mansfield?" at every stop from New York to Ohio because he was terrified he would miss his stop. He worked at a Coney Island and thought he had the greatest job on earth. No snakes crawling up your pants, no German tanks rolling through town, militias burning down your village or killing your family.

Vineland, New Jersey, farm land stretching Far as the eye can see Not much down there, but sun-scorched pastures in Nineteen-fifty-three The war is over, they came searching For a place to be They left the Rhineland, they lost their homeland, and All their family Like feathers on the ocean breeze They went spinning and tumbling 'cross the sea Never know where they'd come down Or who they'd be Like heather on the hillside They were bruised and they were battered by the breeze Searching for a place To be free Sun burn summers and frost by winter Kids were plainly dressed Left the farmhouse when he was old enough, and Headed out west From California to Southern Africa And all the way to France And on to England to meet my mother in Nineteen-eighty-one A feather on the ocean breeze He went spinning and tumbling 'cross the sea Never known where he'd come down Or who he'd be Like heather on the hillside He was bruised and he was battered by the breeze Searching for a place To be free Oh, and like a seed That is flying in the wind In search of water, soil, and sun And the birds and the bees To have it all along Now here I am, thirty-three years down Two-thousand-seventeen I've seen the Rhineland, I've been to Vineland, I'm A feather on the breeze

@@CarlosMartinez-ve6iu I somehow don't think there's any danger of that. He came to that fork in the road years ago, when he could have decided to keep making commercial songs like Let Her Go, which is very catchy but has no real substance to it. Instead he has made dozens of even more personal and enlightening songs (and I don't believe him when he sings that only twelve get sung) that have touched the hearts of millions of people. What better measure of success can you think of?

Picture this very moment one day..... A grandson.."Hey Grandma...seriously, was that really you dancing on the sand on that Passenger song shot at that beach all those years ago?" This dancer(shaky voice).."Yes darling..it was a long time ago but I still remember Mike so well...he went on to pass 100 years old...I have been reliably informed that he still visits a lot of older folk in homes who are a third of his age but still he rolls on with his beautiful songs and plays them to those folk(Grandma begins to weep..tears flooding down her cheeks)... The Grandson.."Hey Grandma, it's ok to shed a tear or two". This Dancer..."I think my tears are flowing for all of Mike's fans who have passed on along the way, my young grandson....he had such a lovely fanbase...and many of them march on and carry his name...nice that, isn't it??.....to be remembered".

I know this is such a late post, and I don’t know who will see this, but I wanted to write this post. It is my opinion that this song is quintessentially a Jewish song. The most obvious part is the verse about Passenger’s grandparents, both survivors of the Holocaust. Just as important, I feel, is the constant roaming expressed throughout the song, as the singer expresses a multigenerational feeling of aimlessness and alienation that comes from both the freedom to travel the world and the knowledge that you’re not truly home anywhere you go. While this may not be true of all Jewish people, it is quite true that the dual themes of persecution and wandering homelessness tie into the history of the Jewish people as a whole, as they have been constantly shoved away with threats, force, or both since practically the beginning of their religion. At least, that’s my take on it. Feel free to find your own meaning in the song.

Just a masterpiece of choreography of the dancer AND the camera work - especially that the camera operator leaves narry a footstep (or perhaps maybe just one or two) on the beach and perfectly captures every movement of the dancer without fail and without a single cut. I would love to know how many times they rehearsed this and how many takes before they shot live and how many takes it took once they did. In any case, brilliant technical work, just beautiful! As for the song, I first heard it and fell in love with it in First Ave in Minneapolis and it deserved a video as beautiful as this to accompany it. Thank you so much to all involved.

I danced like that with the sea last year in Spain. Love your voice, it has this virtue of insinuating itself down in the depths of the soul where life dwells...

What an incredible tribute you have done. How you thought just to add one interpretive dance. It was simple and complicated at the same time. You were given the gift of music. You have multiplied it many times over in your sharing. Thanks Mike.
