My friend did this a much easier way. We had just climbed the nose in 2 days. Our first big wall. Freed up to 5.11, French free to 5.12. Then full aid after that. Slept on on a ledge at camp 4, the actual rock , no portaledge, space bags to sleep in, we went light. Now the relevant part. We rapped fixed single lines down the east ledge descent. I went first and had all the climbing gear. My friend Jared had our small haul bag. His ATC was in the bottom of the bag and I had my spare rappel figure 8, so I gave that to him for the rappel. Within 200’ of the bottom, I noticed the rope had a knot joining another 60 meter rope to the ground. I also noticed chains to my left with another fixed 60 meter rope to the ground. Seemed easier, so I swung over switched ropes at a ledge, then rappelled to the ground. Jared didn’t see me do this, and didn’t notice the knot until he was on it. By good luck and some bouncing the knot went throw the large eye of the figure eight rappel device. Badda-Bing Badda-Bang passed the knot in seconds.

As a recommended rule climber must have two protection attach to the line. Normally we have just one rope to rappel. You are supposed not to have that blue/green second line and just removed one of them without making any pre-replace for it?!

I like to tie a figure 8 on a bight 3 feet below the knot and attach it to my harness before completely relying on the 7mm prusiks hen you take off your rappel device.

Your two carabiners are your two points of attachment yet, you open one. Down to one point of attachment at that time. Not to mention that it was under tension when you opened it. Far more correct ways of doing this.

Very helpful, I am planning on teaching some of my buddies that haven't done this before. One thing I noticed and had a question about is regarding the backup in your figure eight descending. With your backup prusik at the end you grabbed the knot it self to descend, I was always told never to do this but to hold the rope above the knot to move it down. They said that if I was to fall and instinctively grabbed down on the prusik it wouldn't bite the rope. Have you ever heard of this?

Instead of a prusik sling to step into to transfer the load suggest using etriers clipped into distel hitches, allows better positioning and less fiddling.

as far as dropping the super 8... just reclip the 8 on the belay loop to the carabiner, then the ropes are free.. no way of dropping it.

I teach holding the rope obove the knot also to slide it down, so that it doesn't bite, but I get better control of the prusik itself (to keep it from biting while I'm descending) by holding the knot itself.

As an arborist and rock climber as well as trained in aerial rescue I can suggest a better and less time consuming way to do that.

I have to feel the rope and manipulate the crabs with skin on metal contact. I couldn't use gloves unless it was a tad-bit-nipply.

Brandon P although this is a little late, the main reason he has gloves on is because this if a demonstration for fire and rescue. We always wear gloves.
