Hey there! Thinking of getting a dutch driving license? Or just curious how difficult it REALLY is to obtain one?
Part one of this series of finally being able to drive in the Netherlands, I talk about how I (thankfully!) passed my first attempt at the theory examen. It wasn't easy, which is why I wanted to share with you my experience and how you can better prepare for it as well!
Here are the links I mentioned:
www.cbr.nl/ - to start your process
www.theoryhouse.nl/ - for the crash course
www.theorieexamen.nl/ - theory course
Hope you learn from this video, and good luck!!!
Cheers,
Natasha

I honestly recommend doing a weekly class for 1-2hrs for the theory part, that way you can process that weeks information & ask questions or simulate a specific situation together within that class.

Congrats. Taking your theory and practice exam in a test center near your residence used to be normal. If you see danger sign with a white sign (onderbord) with the text "Wild Rooster". That sign is not in English... ;) Don't watch for birds. It means cattle grid and is meant to ensure wildlife does not enter certain areas. You might have seen these at your Hoge Veluwe visit in or around the Park. I think driving in Amsterdam or Utrecht can be hard. I really hate the roundabout near Kanaleneiland. I had my test in Enschede in rush hour so that was easy. Getting stuck in a traffic jam. We do not really practice mountain driving. Some steep ramps is all you can expect. Unless you are in Limburg... I had some training during harvesting in the country side. But no training in big cities. I found driving in Greece and Germany easy. I hate driving in Brussels or Antwerp. Belgium or France in general is ok. In the UK driving on the left was easy to get used to. Steep hills with a. underpowered small car was scary.

@TheTravellingFoxes
@TheTravellingFoxes 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Oh in Manila...don’t even get me started! Hahaha! Jeepneys and buses feel like they’re kings of the road, people switch lanes often, and there’s just no efficient way to catch “traffic offenders” so there’s almost no rules. Oh and we love to honk!

Getting your drivers license nowadaysis so much harder than it used to be when I was 18. I had had 16 driving lessons when I took my exam. Theory and practical exam was linked in one appointment. First you took your theory exam and following that, when you had passed your theory exam, the practical exam. I only had to take one exam because I passed my theory and practical exam in one go. The total sum I spent on my drivers license was 475 guilders (in 1979). I todays money that would be 216 Euro.

In reality, you can acquire back you PH driver's license if you exchanged it for a dutch one. For other expats who has the 30% rule, you can save some euros and time from enrolling in a driving school and taking the exams by exchanging your driver's license. I also drove in the Philippines before coming to NL. Some of the rules are pretty much the same, like right of way, overtaking, priorities, etc. I only referred to the RDW website and the ANWB books for the rules and regulations here in NL, plus help of my colleagues and hubby. Anyway, it is always better to get to know the rules and regulations so you won't get a surprising letter from the CJIB.

Very informing Natasha! You are mentioning that you ''could in reality have exchanged your Philippine driver licence as your partner is highly skilled migrant.'' That your partner is a highly skilled migrant, does that have anything to do with your driver licence and the possibility to exchange yours? Philippines is not on the list on the website, so you can't exchange it without the exams right? They look at you as individual, and not if your partner can use the exemptions then so can you? Hope you can clear this up! :)
@TheTravellingFoxes
@TheTravellingFoxes 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Apparently the 30% ruling applies to family members too! I actually do not understand why, but if your partner is exempt then you can try to apply for the exchange as well. I have a Filipino friend who has done this! Hope this clears that up!

Here is another Dutch Perspective for ya: you'll have to make a decision: Do you want to be entirely on your own, and maybe get to know a few other expats, then by all means stick to English. Do you want to mingle with the Dutch, get a good taste of True Dutch culture, and leave those other expats for what they are for a brief moment? By all means learn Dutch. Even though the vast majority of the Dutch population speaks more or less English, it really is Dutch which is the native language of The Netherlands. Dutch it is and Dutch it will be. To the Dutch it is like this: OK you speak English, so you do not take the trouble to learn Dutch, so you must be temporary here and you must be on your way out soon. We (The Dutch) lost interest in this person. Or: Hey well so nice of this foreigner to learn Dutch, he or she respects this country and its inhabitants and this person obviously wants to mingle with us: let's invite this person into our lives! English is a foreign language to us Dutchies it is a way to talk to strangers whom want to stay stranger, or maybe to a person who really want's to learn Dutch but just arrived... Let there be no misconception about this: English is to talk to strangers and Dutch among friends! This is The Netherlands after all and our language is Dutch and absolutely not English, although to strangers we will talk English. By choosing English as a language, you choose to stay a foreigner ! And so doors stay closed for you! Doors that will open for you when you speak Dutch ;-)
