I very much enjoyed listening to Richard Cervantes here, but still wanted to hear more about what qualifies him to direct the Asian Art department at Heritage Auctions -- which is information rarely, if ever, given out by auction houses. Even if Mr. Cervantes has many experts to call for help in assessing a piece's history and probable value, still a VAST amount of knowledge is needed to make the initial assessment of the value of every piece coming through. I mention this because of a recent Chinese blue and white vase that was sold at auction for $8.9 million when it had been described by the auction house (Osenat in France) as "quite ordinary" and was expected to sell for less than $2,000 -- probably because the piece was not that old. As it turned out, despite its relatively new age, clearly the public knew a stunningly beautiful vase when they saw it! Bottom line, if the head of that Asian art department could make THAT enormous an error in judging the piece's value, then we should all have our pieces seen by two or three auction houses before deciding on one.
