Sonnet/Station No. 6 - Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus.
Veronica as well, with veil in hand,
Stands on the road that leads to Calvary.
I sometimes wonder if she was harangued
For aiding Jesus in his time of need.
Not worried, though, that she might get it wrong,
She sees his blood-streaked face beneath the wood,
And like the drummer boy with just a song,
She offers him the only gift she could.
She gently cleans his battered, bloodied face,
And certainly, she never once supposed
To see the God-Man’s image somehow traced…
Imprinted on her veil (and, too, our souls).
He smiles at her because of course, he knew..
Next Jesus falls again, like déjà vu.
