L: I had a feeling this "sleeper" was your mystery DAC. Thanks for explaining the sound quality differences with the upgraded op-amps especially the Vivids and the SP's. I just so happen to be able to fill you in on several details you and your readers may be wondering about the Dayzee...because I was lucky enough to get a recent Geshelli eye-opening factory tour when I realized there were only one town over from me. In doing so I met nearly everyone including G/S and GJ...and directly heard this device as compared to their new J3. This is quite lengthy post but if you're interested in this device this is info worth knowing for sure--because I specifically ASKED them the very questions many people want to know! I personally have run into some issues that have kept me from making a decision of what to do for my Oppo 205 "upgrade", but this is definitely still on my target list. Q1. There's no price listed with most references for the Dayzee...What's the cost going to be? A: For an all- plexiglass casing (non-wooden), it will start at $1,200 for the base op-amps. For "simple" wooden cases, it will start at $1,300. I add: they also have a black faceplate and probably my preference, a silver face plate just like probably a lot of your existing equipment. That's a steal in any configuration for the prowess of this device. Q2. Why no i2s? A: Because there's no standard and the timing gets very tricky using it. We work hard to make sure the USB sounds as good as the i2s would. Q3. Do you really have to change out all eight op-amps? A: Yes... it's a different beast from everything else we have. Because it's a dual mono design & the op-amps don't necessarily refer specifically to channels. This is the only DAC where that's necessary. I add: that could be a significant cost to do on this device is opposed to the J3. Q3. Why do you just use a wall wart power supply instead of a linear power supply? Aren't those superior? A: NOT necessary ..according to our $40,000 (!) test device...we show no degradation between the two just using the simpler AC adapter. Q4. Why is the case so much bigger than your typical DAC? A: It's basically two DACs in one case with the mono design. It has 2x AKM4499 and also 2x RCA and XLR out (in addition to 2x Toslink & Coax). All those connectors take extra space and all that circuitry needs extra space to breathe. I add: the larger dimensions makes for some of the nicest woodworked cases I've seen on an audio component--complete with engraving availability. Q5. Is it really only available in the US? A: Yes, at this time, because it takes so long to meticulously manufacture (multiple hours) that we can't risk overloading our small team Q6: How do I set the different filters on the AKM chipset with no screen or menu? A: You don't. We set the "most commonly used/our favorite" one at the factory. However, if you are aware of the AKM options and want a particular one (such as brick wall) we can set it for you during the build process. I was also wondering the different gain controls in their previous products....and whether that carried over to the DayZee. As I suspected, it does not and it's pure signal--the best way. I personally listened with G & S to a J3Pro with the Sparkos Pro 2590 and the Dayzee with the stock TI... and for most tracks I definitely preferred the Dayzee. There's something magical about this that goes beyond the op amps--it really is a beautiful looking and sounding piece of equipment. And oh yeah, last but not least...the family is possibly the friendliest people I've met in the audio industry. All the rumors you've all heard are true :)

Great post, Scott. Thank you! One point I'd add here is that Geno's response about LPSs is regarding the measurable impact on sound. This won't take into account if the impacts of the power supply sit outside of what we properly understand and can measure (which is probably a larger bucket than what we can measure because we don't know what we don't know). My experience with Geshelli DACs is that LPSs do improve the sound by a small amount. Not enough that I would recommend people buy an expensive LPS for a Geshelli DAC unless it's the final tweaks they want to make to their system and things like op-amps and interconnects are all at a level they're happy with.

Thank you for this review! The Dayzee is a stunning DAC. The upgrade that is not small - is to use a linear power supply. The soundstage is enormous and 3D and layered - very often it is spine tingling. Slight correction on the price of the Sparkos op-amps - they offer 15% off if you sign up for their very infrequent emails. And they do have 25-30% sales from time to time.

at this level 1/2 the folks are replacing dacs for an existing speaker/amp combo where they perceive a flaw in the dac or speaker, sometimes amp. only about 20% build out a system from scratch. so while objectively there are clearly diminishing returns to buying dacs above $500, you're talking about audiophiles who want to get the best for their system in a budget. and $1,300 - $1,800 ain't cheap, but it's actually a value against even more expensive units as the review said. and you're going to be keeping this for 10 years

Another awesome review, appreciate all the effort! Did you ever learn if the perceived stronger end of the Dayzee can be correlated with the SS2590s, or is it perhaps more related to another feature of the design, such as the power supply? Really, I’m after the dac in the $1k range with the best-in-class bass delivery, and am wondering if the J3 with the SS2590 will get me close enough to the performance of the dayzee, which seems to be consistently awesome for bass based on everything I’ve seen.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 6 күн бұрын
I haven't delved into that question any further, but suspect it's a combination of the 2590s AND the specific circuit (capacitors, etc.) in the Dayzee. The J3 Pro is definitely a fantastic DAC in the sub $1000 range. The Schiit Bifrost 2 is also important to consider.

You have not reviewed the Gustard a26. We would need You to do a comparison review of the Dayzee with the Sparkos op amps vs. The Gustard a26. There's a $500 price difference favoring the Gustard. In addition, the Gustard has a built-in renderer for streaming. I've heard the Dayzee with the sparkos op amps (Florida audio expo). Both of these dacs are Delta Sigma with the same AKM chips. This would truly be an apples to apples comparison. I predict that for those who prefer an airy, highly detail presentation, the Gustard a26 would be their choice. For those who prefer a slightly warmer and a bit richer midrange, the Dayzee with sparkos op amp would be their choice. The ball is on your court. Please bring us the comparison. Thank you.

I can't afford Denafrips Terminator plus or the Holo May Kte, which are the only r2r dacs that deliver the true organic rich sound of r2r dacs, while simultaneously retaining the micro details and open clear presentation of a great DS dac. @@Scott-DJ OK, good to know, but that is not what I was talking about. I2S has been getting a lot of traction because, in general, it seems to be the preferred interface for signal integrity. I am in Australia like yourself and, yes the shipping cost/insurance then import tax really starts to mount up ( not the fault of Geshelli) So I am on the fence about ordering??? Not sure how much of a jump it is over the Jnog s - I have the chord Hugo TT2 and MScaler in my main system so looking for a dac at reasonable cost for my second system! I know the new Schiit Gungnair is due soon - there is the 15th version of Denefrips, and the Cyan 2 which appears to have some interesting reviews ( but it has a major flaw) …. so ahhhhh mulling over Geshelli a wonderful wonderful company?

They aren’t having these things made by the thousands in China to be distributed globally. Your DAC is pretty much made to order by hand in Florida, USA. How many components today are a great value AND let you customize the build to your liking? Hopefully, they will sell them outside the US soon.

My understanding is that you can easily add a LPS just like you can with other Geshelli DACs. In fact, I had asked the same from Neal Blanchard (Dayzee owner, and audiophile engineer) and he responded similarly. BTW, Geshelli recommends using the custom LPS from Pine Tree Audio. I went that route and could not be happier with my LPS. Jesse is amazing to work with, and he had created a fully custom, dual variable, power supply so that I can use it with other gear in the future...i.e., my LPS is fully future proof and is not limited to the Geshelli input voltage (12v). In fact, I use the other channel to power my WiiM Pro Plus streamer 5v input).

It's important when talking about gear what it's connected to. I have a simple system the wilsenton r8 because of the pre in, schitt freya with Psvane CV181-T MKII, Verity Fidelio. My streamer dac is HiFi Rose 250a, The dac in this I can hear the weight applied to piano keys in songs like High Healed Boys. Without better gear no reason to move up to a Dave or Lina. I did try a Weise 501 I could have bought for 5000 but it didn't add enough to justify the expense as I would have had to keep the rose for streaming instead of selling to off set the price. Only thing that really matters seems to me it fits with your system and you are happy with it. Changing flavors of the day in same category is a waste of money as in these comments some one the factory told them to stay with what they got how honest can they be.

I'm a bit late to this video and am utterly sold to buy this with the Sparkos upgrade . . . One day. I'm still paying off my DCA E3 and HEKSE. Seems like it's currently out of stock at the moment, and that's fine for now. lol But anyway, I'm currently rocking the Schiit Jot 2 and it just dawned on me that what I thought was a powerful and impressive amp might not drive appropriately the sound coming from a future Dayzee. If that's the case, what would be a decent best-bang-for-the-buck recommendation? If losing 5% of quality means a $2000 saving, I'll take the cheaper option at the moment. 😅

The Jot 2 will be great with the Dayzee (and I think they don't have the Dayzee listed on the site so email Geshelli when you're ready). Of course, an even better amp will be great with the Dayzee so you could look at options like the Schiit Mjolnir 3, Burson Soloist 3X GT or LAiV HP2A as a few wonderful options that will provide significantly better sound.

Question. If you don't use XLR outputs, do you only need 4 op-amps vs 8? Also, there are some very nice-sounding classic single op-amps out there, e.g. OPA627, AD744, if one wanted to avoid spending on discretes.
@PassionforSound

You need to change all 8 regardless because they're not mapped directly to the outputs like in the J2S/J3. I agree that op-amps like the 627s would be absolutely lovely!

Every DAC has some form of op-amps AFAIK. Some are discrete designs as part of the output stage, others are chips, others again are discrete design plugins like the Sparkos. The only DACs I've come across that might not use op-amps are those from Chord using the Pulse Array module (which might be a form of op-amp for all I know) and those where a Class-D amp chip is used to directly convert from digital to the output analog waveform.

I live in NA but I will not be buying the Dayzee. This is a very unique device (very few of us need 8 outputs) and this Geshelli does not seem suit my use case….no mater its value proposition may be. I’m a bit confused Larchan, why you were unable to swap a combination pair (L/R) of Op Amps with a DAC that has so many output but instead changing all 8 between for each comparison you made. That is too bad you no longer have a A26 to compare this DAC with directly with, after all the Gustard has discrete output circuitry too and a better linear power to that of the 12v Dayzee I hope that you will review the J3 sometime in the future since it seems to be designed to a larger consumer group. I’m hoping Geshelli will develop a J4 in the future however with similar feature to the current J3 but rather the extra toslink and coaxial in the front it would come with a I2S in the back. I need this output for a CD transport.

Read my lengthy post. The reason is because this is a different beast: the dual mono design does not exactly directly equate op-amps to channels... So this is their only DAC where you must swap out all eight channels at once.

Each op-amp is mono and the dual AK4499s each output stereo outputs, possibly with multiple channels or perhaps there are op-amps for handling the positive and negative side of the signal for the balanced outputs. Either way, it'll be four op-amps per side (left/right) and each op-amp will be processing one channel of the output signal from the chips.

@@PassionforSound I've heard similar things concerning the family from many other ppl who have dealt with them...and I do keep looking at the product for a reason. It's just a difficult product to purchase if you aren't basically a "scientist" when it comes to this stuff. I'm less than 2 years into the hobby. I don't understand what 3/4 of this stuff is on a technical level. I don't know the difference between this opamp & that opamp. I'm not familiar with terminology for woodworking either. There HAS to be a better way to market this product than what they're doing currently. By all accounts it's amazing. I want one...but don't know what internal parts I need. They need to put up a "base model" of this product, with clear pricing....and then all the options can be add-ons. Also with clear pricing. The way they list their other customizable product. I don't know the difference between the opamps when it comes to those products either...but at least I can read the options that are available and what they cost. I ain't trying to be "anti-Geshelli Labs" here. Not at all. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I want to do business with them...and I'd like for them to make that an easier process for me. Without having to make phone calls or get into emails. How can I conversate about things that I don't know? Even talking with them, I'm basically just going to nod along & act like I know what they are talking about...or they are going to have to give me a 101 class concerning EVERYTHING. I don't want to do one of those options...and THEY don't want to do the other one. ...and I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to spend hours explaining every little detail about the internal workings of an intricate electronics component to some guy who may not even spend a dime...so I certainly don't expect them to do it. Their time is obviously more valuable than that. EDIT: Basically, I guess I'm asking for them to list a base model of the Dayzee at whatever price they want to list it....and show me the price for the different options for opamps, USB input & how many of each of those items that I would even need to pay for. ...and with the case options....just list it up like every other Geshelli product. Tell me which materials are available, what colors they come in, what they cost....and if you sell me a wooden one, tell me that I can also have it carved up super fancy for $X.XX.xx. Show/tell me what is available and what it costs. As I said. Every Dayzee I've seen looks totally different than the last Dayzee I saw. I wouldn't even know it's the same product if I hadn't been told. ...and I don't even know which options are possible when it comes to the looks of this item. It's an expensive unit. If the base model costs $1,200 and the fully loaded one is $1,500 I'd probably just buy the loaded out one. If the base model is $1,200 and the fully loaded one is $4,000...I'm obviously not buying the fully loaded one. At 2 years in, I don't have the gear to justify something like that. My gear is a LOT better than it probably should be, but I don't have any single component that cost over $2,250...and my speakers were $4,000 for the pair. My subwoofers were also about $4,000 for the pair. If this hypothetical base model Dayzee is $1,200...but I can deck it out with fancy carved woodwork while keeping the internals "base model" for $1,600...I would opt for that $1,600 option and I would upgrade the internals of my Dayzee as my other equipment gets better over time. If any of this even makes sense. Sorry for the novel, but this is the Dayzee we are talking about here. Infinitely customizable. ...and my whole problem is that with the way they are selling this product, the ppl of Geshelli Labs would have to spend 2 or 3 hours just telling me what all their options are & why I would even need them or care about them in the first place. I don't expect that from them. I'm not going to ask them to do it either. If they'd just sell me a based out Dayzee in a cool wooden box with metal front & rear panels and let me upgrade it as I go, that'd be awesome. NO CLUE what that would cost me, tho. ...and I also have no clue what "base model" internal parts I would even need. I'm only 2 years into the hobby, but I have a $30,000 system. Certainly not entry level...but certainly not top of the line either. That said, I don't want the cheapest stuff Geshelli is putting into the Dayzee...but I also do not need the most expensive stuff they're putting into the Dayzee. If an opamp is $90 and I need 16 of them, and it's only going to marginally improve things...I'd just NOT pay for all those opamps.

Let’s talk about bias. I have to spend $3.5 to $4k to equal this Delta Sigma DAC as it is undervalued by 200% compared with the market ??? That is a crime to be sure. I just watched the three videos you did with the Geshelli family and I am glad you are so close to them. You have a financial interest in promoting Geshelli products and, it appears, the op-amps, but I may be wrong and hope this is clarified for the sake of understanding biased reviewing by other reviewers. So much bias out there.

Honestly, I was firmly aware of the potential of what you had alleged, but I didn't detect any bias here. Actually, it was quite the opposite. His review was very objective, and he was quick to point out deficits (perceived and subjective) in the Dayzee in comparison to the competing DACs he had on hand. I have watched other reviews of this DAC, and also read the comments from many viewers...everyone of those were truly glowing reviews. Lachlan's review was not that at all (honestly, I really wanted it to be because the Dayzee is on my upgrade list). The point is that this was not a biased review... but it was rather very much a Dragnetesque "just the facts..." review just like we would expect to receive from Lachlan.

@@Artemis_PrixI don’t disagree with you but this channel declares categorically that all reviews are biased. See last video. It is like ASR and its adherence to a rigid ideology. @@middleearthltdone thing Lachlan does often touch on in his content, if not emphasize, is that when getting to these higher levels of performance the objective scrutiny becomes less a part of the observation and the subjective becomes more. Inherently, this means his impressions could differ significantly from that of others based on equipment pairing, perceived value, and preferred sound qualities. Reviewing gear at this level and above is often going to be biased beyond the reviewer’s control even if they are aware of that potential. Perhaps the timing of his previous video was intentional? Yes or no, it’s nice to see it addressed.

If you watch my various Geshelli Labs reviews (including this one), you'll find that I generally very much like their products and they're great people to deal with. However, you'll also find that I don't suggest these are the best products for everyone and I specifically said in the J2S review that I felt it had been overhyped in its AK4493 version by other reviewers. It just so happens that the Dayzee is significantly better than any other DAC in the same price range IF you upgrade the op-amps. Without upgraded op-amps, the Dayzee is just a decent $1300 dac. By the way, there's no benefit to me when people upgrade the op-amps. After all, you could buy direct from Geshelli or via Burson or Sparkos at the same time as buying the DAC or later. There's no way to track how someone is buying them for affiliate purposes and even if there were, neither Burson or Sparkos have any affiliate programs (in case you're assuming financial interests).

Adding high quality DC LPS to this DAC should upgrads sound quality as much as opamp switching. I have tried cheap LPS from AliExpress first on my cheap Wiim pro and I was not impressed at all. It made little better bass but sounds became little dull, not that upgraded sounds I expected. Later I got my own custom LPS made with audiophile quality capacitors and increased capacitance with custom made power cable and usb cable. And upgraded sounds I get was really unexpected. Extra bottom end, wider sound stage, more texture, bigger dynamic, and etc, just about every aspect of the sound quality was improved. It really made cheap Wiim pro to next level streamer.

For example, I tuned one for more bass by increasing the trans size and capacitor value. And I tuned the other one for a more extended upper range by different bypass capacitors. I also use different power and USB cables too. Only this way it will make a true upgrade. With this LPS upgrade my Wiim pro is as good as CD even with mp3 file when I use it as pure streamers with my tube DAC. I could make this improvement with my limited knowledge and resources, I am sure somebody from a decent audio manufacturer can do way better than I can. In fact a lot of high end gears do come with dedicated outboard LPS and that LPS will work with only that specific gear because it was tuned for that specific gear from the developing stage.

@@jkim4712 While I do know that every part makes a difference, tuning a power supply is definitely beyond my current skillset. Thank you for the info.

I've got my Dayzee running on a locally made Gieseler Kraftwerk II LPS and I would say there might be a minor improvement, but not a large enough one that I would urge people to buy one for the Dayzee. Each device is different in terms of the impact of the power supply on the sound and the Dayzee does benefit slightly, but it's nowhere near the degree of improvement that op-amps deliver.

@@PassionforSound I have check it through company website. It didn't look anything special. I do not have experience on your DAC or system. And I don't know what improvement you are looking for, maybe you could add Duelund bypass capacitors on final filtering stage and this can usually clean up overall sound and brings little more details.

Hi was waiting for the review as someone who has bought their products before… and was talking to the truely wonderful people at Geshelli about buying one and knew you had one for review ! I am in Australia like yourself and, yes the shipping cost/insurance then import tax really starts to mount up ( not the fault of Geshelli) So I am on the fence about ordering??? I note they now have the Jnog3 which takes the top of the line sparkos? Not sure how much of a jump it is over the Jnog s - I have the chord Hugo TT2 and MScaler in my main system so looking for a dac at reasonable cost for my second system! I know the new Schiit Gungnair is due soon - there is the 15th version of Denefrips, and the Cyan 2 which appears to have some interesting reviews ( but it has a major flaw) …. so ahhhhh mulling over Geshelli a wonderful wonderful company?
