I used mine for the first time last week, the only thing I found when draining the last of the runnings out of the mash tun, some of the fine grain that manages to get through the mesh and sits on the bottom of the mash tun come through the tap. I did re circulate for about 15 to 20 minutes was quite surprised when this happened. my video on its first use will up tomorrow.

Thanks for this video Tom! I am also beginning to build a home brewery. I am going with SS Brew Tech. I am leaning toward there new E-kettle system. Cheers!

Hi Tom, When you rebuild your control panel I recommend the Auber EZboil DSPR120 for the BK. Last year I built one of the 30A Control panel kits from The Electric Brewery and replacing the supplied PID for the BK with the EZboil was one of a few modifications I made and it has worked very well, I have 5500W elements which provide a vigorous boil, and because of being able to just turn a knob instead of having to push several buttons to reduce the power to the element the EZboil has saved me from a boil over several times. Cheers! 🍺

I totally agree with Mike J. I use the EZ Boil controller and it makes everything so easy. I start the boil at 100%, turn it down to 65%, during the boil, then up it to 80% when I add my immersion chiller.

Hi Tom. Great stuff. I bought the High Gravity BIAB system and 2 of my batches came off odd. I am wondering if I should have passivated my system. Real quick how much gallons and ozs of Strar Sans did you use? By you video it may have been a lot lol.

Very timely! Need to passivate my SS brew bucket. Better order more Starsan... 1oz per Gal?! 🙈 Cheers

I would use some of my phosphoric acid, sure it would work out cheaper?

I think you can ask on the brew forums

I just got a ss brew bucket and did this as well. I would not reuse the star san as after I was done with the passivating there was a black coating that wiped off the inside of the bucket after I drained it. It was like powdery and came off with a wipe. After wiping it down it was super clean looking and now is in the freezer at 50 degrees F full of my first attempt at a german helles. 7 oz was a lot of star san, like 7 brew days worth. But its not expensive if you buy the 32 oz at a time and well worth it since I saw what came off the ss bucket.

I think applying electrical current is more in the process of chrome plating or galvanising. Hope you had an RCD connected or at least someone handy with a defib ?

How much starsan did you add per gallon for passivation please? 😂

Why doesn’t anyone ever show the actual cleaning of the equipment after brewing? It has to be a pain in the ass. What do you even do to get the grain out of that thing?

Passivation is simply the act of cleaning off any foreign surface debris so that the chromium oxide layer can naturally form. All this talk about having to passivate new stainless steel equipment with StarSan that shows no signs of rust spots is a waste of good Star San and your time.

Passivation is actually the process of creating an oxide film by intentionally corroding the metal in a controlled manner. This is done as a preventative measure to ensure that the base metal is protected. The star-san can be collected, and mixed with fresh water to dilute for future use.

6kW?!? I use a 3.5kW induction plate and that's plenty of power even for 10g batches...

1oz A Gallon 😭! Will you end up cutting that with water after you get dUne passivating? Make sure Harry keeps the bird droppings away from your kettle 🤣 Oh you will definitely enjoy the extra element, I’m sure we commenters can help you spend more $’s I’m interested in what apparatus you find for the mash tun sight glass? What is the story on the cups hanging on the wall? Cheers

May have been cheaper to just use some phosphoric acid, maybe even a few litres of coke? :-)
@mitchellul

the main ingredient in star san is phosphoric acid.

Yeah that's the point Starsan is about £22 a liter whereas phosphoric acid is about £9
