Can someone explain this passive link? Sorry i’m new to touch world.

The link player (player between middle and wing) stays “passive”. So they don’t involve themselves in the play until the very last second. Since the link is passive the defence tends to ignore them, not mark them, or the defending link might feel more inclined to help the middles and come in to shut down a play. If the pass is successful to the passive link, the attacking side gets an easy overlap 2v1.

This is a move to negate the shutdown defense. With the shutdown, normally the offensive open side link gets the defensive wing coming up hard in his face when the shut happens. A passive link stays intentionally too deep for the wing to shut on him, so he has time to catch, draw the defensive wing and then pass.

The set up for the passive link will generally involve the middle running a line to commit the link defender in. Otherwise the attacking passive link would be easily accounted for being so deep.
