You lose it, unless you generated that passkey and it was saved in a server provided by your OS.

The inconvenient route is to make sure you have Passkeys to your services stored all the devices you own. But the more convenient option, is that Passkeys can be saved to your Google account or Apple ID. Other dedicated password managers like 1Password and Bitwarden are currently implementing the ability to store and use passkeys across devices. Wherever you sync your passkeys, just gotta be sure to keep the account secure.

It does leave the device, when you use like a Keychain to save all those passkeys. The only saving grace from people using your passkeys are probably the biometric feature to confirm that it's you signing in.

If it works the way he says it does, then it does not leave your device he. Just explained why that's the case. You may be confusing passkeys with auto generated password suggestions

Steve Gibson's SQRL solved this problem earlier and better than the Passkeys consortium did but of course we don't get SQRL because it's open source and can't be controlled. There's a video topic for you.

but what does using a passkey look like? will we still type something in? use a finger print? press a button that says sign in?

I'm confused. It's only 58 seconds and it cuts off just as you say "Which is why ..." Did something happen to the rest of it or is this functioning as intended?

If you watch it from the KZbin app on mobile it auto loops the video. So when he says “which is why…” it loops into the beginning of the video producing “which is why passkeys are…”

surely sites are only as secure as the weakest link. Adobe for instance uses passkeys but still has access via a password that I can't seem to disable.

what happens if someone has your public key. And they inserted into the website does the private Authorization then you to your device? how does that work?
@Crisz445
@Crisz445 2 жыл бұрын
So, this is asymmetric cryptography, the public key encodes data that only the correct private key can decode and vice-versa. As long as you, and only you, have the private key, everyone else may have the public key. The process is simple, when you create an account your device generates a private key and a public key, then the public key is sent to the server. Whenever the server needs to authenticate you, it simply needs to send your device a challenge asking you decode a message, if your device do so correctly, you are good to go. Basically everyone can have your public key, because the public key cannot decode a challenge sent by another public key, only the private key can do that.

Does this mean apps like dashlane and 1Password will be obsolete? Should I skip purchasing a password manager and just wait for passkeys to take over? Thx. -JB
@scottishwildcat
@scottishwildcat 2 жыл бұрын
Depends what browsers and devices you use. If you only use Apple apps on Apple hardware, you can probably stick with iCloud keychain for now, and the transition to passkeys will probably be smoother. Many of us use 1Password because we want to sync with the other browsers and OSes it supports, though, and we'll have to keep doing that for a few years yet I'd imagine.
