em diar no one really uses the word “sweater” here. It might have been old English, don’t get me wrong it sounds like you know your stuff, but everyone here calls it “jumper” mostly. “Angora sweater” rarely comes up in conversation. But in that context yeh however most of the time it’s just “jumper”. kind of like if someone said “high school” in Britain we’d be like wtf? I mean we’d know what they meant but here it’s upperschool. So ofc we can figure most of the americanisms cuz of tv and films etc, however they’re not really used here yk?

Also (if it's not too personal a question) how old are you and to which social 'class' do you identify, background wise? As a bit of a language history geek, I do know my stuff, and it fascinates me. Sweater is one of those words some English people seem to have disowned and now wrongly believe to be American. We used 'the fall' for centuries until it became fashionable to say autumn (nicked from French). By then America was up and running and the trend didn't reach them, so they carried on saying fall. Now we mock them for it, but it's us who changed, not them. "Socca" (soccer) is an English slang abbreviation of Association Football, meaning the modern game whose rules had been standardised by the FA. The Yanks don't even have the FA, but they kept our nickname for the game long after we dropped it. Again, we take the piss, but it's our word. There are regional pockets of old English that survive in parts of Britain. Thee, thou and thine can still be heard in Yorkshire for instance, and in 1980s Staffordshire (where I grew up), sweater still meant jumper, and no one would look at you like you were weird for using the word.
