The story behind the attack of the dead men was the germans mustard was faulty, the gas wasn't as potent as intended to. The surviving russian soldiers played dead with their wepons close at hand. The germans slowly advanced towards the russians, the russian raised up and let out a war cry. To the germans it was corpses raising up it, horrified the germans so they fled as the russian shot them one by one.

That wasn’t luck that was pure, adrenaline and anger keeping them alive if they even are. They could have been dead and only using muscle memory and adrenaline.
