Honestly, it's a bit vague how Ichigo got Hollowfied, but I think the Shattered Shaft was the awakening to his own Innate Hollow due to the Hollow being passed down from Masaki

The hallow zangetsu was there from the start and seeing how his life was in danger it makes sense for zangetsu to take over to save Ichigo during his training with Urahra to regain his soul reaper powers.
