I share this sentiment 1000 percent, and I know we're not the only ones. I only hope and pray they continue to document---not just for the sake of sharing their beautiful stories, culture, and cuisine, but mostly bc these women deserve to be showered w/the warmth of loving attention & caring company.

I 100,000,000% agree. All of my grandparents died before I was 14 and my mother in 2019. I only have anecdotal recipes from them. One is from "the Italians down the street" my aunt chewed my ass when I made it for them because I didn't "brown the beef" for a dish that was going to take hours. Now that's how she makes her spaghetti sauce.

She rejected her suitors at a time where unmarried women were pitied or frowned upon, looked at suspiciously. She's a role model. Go your way, knowing there is a price to pay but don't go a way because people are expecting you to do. I would love to hear stories from her life.

I don’t know what I’d like more....to have a meal at Rosina’s house or to hug her. As a young child I did not appreciate my Nonas. I loved them dearly but couldn’t understand how special they were. Listening to all of these beautiful women makes me want to visit Italy, home of my grandparents. God bless all of them!
@louislandi9383 жыл бұрын
Also, the number 1 reason they didn’t/couldn’t return to Italy is because they were wanted by the police. Very true comment!
@oxigenarian97633 жыл бұрын
I didn't appreciate or understand what I had waiting for me with my Nonas either. Now that I am old, I feel disconnected from my Italian heritage. When they came here, they told each other to leave their European roots behind. My Polish grandparents would not even teach my Dad Polish because, as they would say, "We are Americans now, we speak English." The Sicilian side of my family was probably the same way. If they are still alive, treasure your older parents/grandparents - you will never regret hearing their tales of the old country - it is, after all, your heritage, too.
@silverlightx63 жыл бұрын
@@oxigenarian9763 When I asked my dad about my heritage as a child I was always told: "a bit of this, a bit of that, 100% American Mutt." Having run what genealogy I can dig up, he wasn't wrong :)
@oxigenarian97633 жыл бұрын
@@silverlightx6 From what I could glean or drag out of the surviving members of my family, mine was far from that and, in spite of having a clearly Polish ethnic background competing with my Sicilian side, I found out recently that I am actually 1/4 Finnish and my Grandfather from Sicily was actually from Tuscany. These findings are mixed in with strong ties to Western peoples, presumably Celtic in origin. The intrigue remains unanswered today......

It’s so shocking to learn that after all those years of work she’s been compensated with a mere 500 euros per month, what an absolute injustice!
@misspomerol3 жыл бұрын
I’d take it. She has no rent, grows much of her own food, likely doesn’t drive so no car expenses. It’s not a fancy life but you get what you need. I live in Abruzzo and a lot of pensioners here live on about €700-€800 just fine because the cost of living is so low. They all own their properties and walk everywhere. Calabria is even lower.
@rominaperissinotto8933 жыл бұрын
Purtroppo in Italia è così. Molte persone anziane percepiscono pensioni di 500 euro.
@Ardoxsho3 жыл бұрын
There's a minimum number of years and a minimum amount each year you need to pay contributions for. Otherwise you'll get a "pensione minima", as she does, and as I will, too, despite working since before I even left school. That's what happens to people who've spent time abroad, worked "in nero" for years... tons of reasons why it can happen, and does happen to so many people. Working on your property, of course, doesn't count as work.
@claudiomatera72113 жыл бұрын
The amount you get for your pension is a reflection of the contributions you paid whilst working. The least you deposit when you are active, the lesser you get when retired. It’s math
@Ardoxsho3 жыл бұрын
@@claudiomatera7211 In Italy a minimum pension of 500 eu is guaranteed to all those who have worked and paid contributions, but do not meet full requirements in terms of the number of years worked in Italy, the amounts paid...
