Join Graeme for a paste bait fishing challenge! What a film mashup for fishermen this week. First out of the traps is a brand new, unseen film where Graeme sets himself a challenge to catch fish on 2 different paste baits. Paste baits are an old school top fishing bait that he feels is still not used much today, yet still catches fish. The bait is great fun to make, it's cheap and you can put in your own twist in the shape of food colourings and flavourings. Then he sets out to show you a good tip for tricking Flatfish when you can't get hold of Ragworm, Lugworm or Sandeel...so easy and yet so successful. Then in a follow up to his recent film about how in his opinion the UK rivers are becoming neglected and harder to fish...he tries to show the next generation what to look out for if you want waters for fishing to improve and he even includes Canals this time. It's over an hour long, so let him transport your mind to somewhere less stressful...well at least for an hour anyway!

As a young boy, nearly 50yrs ago, at the start of my fishing odyssey and as poor a a church mouse I used to often fish the local lakes with nothing more than bread paste, I can't say it was the greatest bait ever but I did catch!... and that was me hooked for life.

Graham when I was work’s foreman at a mineral factory. An old boy came asking for a job he was in his late 50s. So I gave him a job but his previous job was clearing rivers for the waterways where he was in those rivers digging by hand the use of diggers and so on. Ask him why stupidly which he replied to keep the water flow right so the rivers were healthy. This was possibly 15 years ago. His gang of workers I think there was 5 of them were all laid off due to cuts. I guess this happened across the country. Great video cheers.

Bread and cheese dumped in an old bit of cloth soaked then squashed up and kneaded till all melded together, what a bait....circa 1968. Lead shot in a a tiny tin tray and a Quill float, endless hours of fun, full of memory's. Our generation were very lucky ;)

We were indeed,but probably never realised it at the time...How quickly things change...30/40 years I reckon ??...maybe less??...I honestly think the climate changed early 1970's when I started to notice a lot more wind while float fishing for Tench...maybe the drought of 76 was also a pointer.

@@TAFishing Yes I remember 76, reservoirs and rivers drying out, green goddesses, water bowsers etc etc. I don't think its all down to climate change although I don't deny it. there has also been a change in farming with much more reliance on chemical fertilisers and mechanisation, less hands to do other work and larger fields. I do not know how much produce we grow for ourselves now, but all those jets flying in spuds from Israel and other greens etc from Europe can't help. We seem to experience vast flooding and yet no one seems to realise our rivers and streams let alone ditches are all choked, it seems to me there has been a lot of knowledge lost in these last couple of generations. Too many folks behind desks and not enough people with hands on experience methinks. By the way we are not the only ones suffering I watched a KZbin upload concerning New Zealand's polluted rivers and was astounded at the fact that such a place considered so pristine could have such problems.

Thanks for the kind comment...I do try to be a bit more topical,though I realise I won't ever get big view numbers because I am not a slave to the system of trend following....I like to put up what I want and of course our films are specifically logged for adults ,that's why some of the comments are so cohesive. I do actually find the comments quite interesting and shows that a lot of people do watch the film all the way through, rather than rush and skip to "but where's the fish ? I don't want to learn anything, I just want the fish "....More films in the files,I still haven't started putting my main new catch films up yet,I'm trying to hold out in case we all get shut down again(Don't even go there surely)

You mentioned Oldiham then the canal, if I'm not mistaken that would be the Basingstoke canal and if so I would have fished on it from Church Crookham right downwards passed Tundry Pond as a kid, fifty odd years ago and used to catch some really good fish, Perch, tench and so on. At the old hothouse where they used to hire rowing boats out I once caught an 18 pound pike. I knew all the rivers around that area down and past Winchester and used to poach trout at Freefolk, just outside Whitchurch. Oh happy memories, thank you Graeme.

Never used paste bait apart from bread feel I missed a trick. Those turbot look great so glad you put that nice one back. I've ranted about the state of rivers, canals and feeder streams on your channel in the past. All of the latter need to be managed properly, when the rivers get clogged we get flooding that causes millions of pounds worth of damage if you keep the rivers flowing properly a lot of the damage would be avoided. Don't get me going on canals, the Grand Union is now a parking lot for boat owners & barges, the amount of rubbish dumped into the canal and on the banks makes you want to cry. Areas of natural beauty have been destroyed and to be frank nobody gives a toss, greed comes first. When there was a close season back in the 60's, during Mid May - Early June I used to deliberately miss the school bus and walk 8 miles along the canal where you would see huge shoals of Roach, Perch, Bream, Carp and Tench swimming Mid Water recovering from spawning and I would memorise where there were high concentrations of fish for the start of the fishing season. We used to get fresh water mussels and smaller fish (the name escapes me). We had the working barges still delivering coal. imaginative

Various Problems for our rivers over the last 50 years. 1. Bikes, rubbish, shopping trolleys and other large objects. This will slow the flow and choke the river up with silt and weeds. 2. Farming Fertilizer. This causes the banks to overgrow combined with no maintenance. 3. Random Weather Conditions. 50 years ago the yearly weather pattern was more stable. Im young and this is what i see in my local rivers.

Hi I used to take my son fishing at woodland lakes Thirsk. I always used paste baits I made in my kitchen, and I very seldom went home without quite a lot of fish under my belt I also used to fish right in the margins at my side of the lake because I found but that's where the big fish were. most people were trying to fish out at the margins on the other side and as far as the fish is concerned the margins on either side is just the same so rather than try and get right near something that was way away I've just dropped my bait down put my ground bait in and waited for the fish to bite I never failed to get a good haul and my son used to get quite a few as well I don't go for she now because I'm 70 and unfortunately housebound but I enjoy watching your KZbin channel and wish I could go out again

I was out on the river the other day and i was a little shocked at the damage to the banks in a few places caused by flooding. I just happened to stop and chat to the land owner/farmer as i sometimes do and he was telling that although there are many problems with rivers 2 problems cause a lot of trouble. 1, Land management in respects to drainage. Farmers create drainage for the fields which in turn adds to the flooding, but also adds to the silt issue. Add that to lack of water management, as in dredging. Farmers don't do it, land owners don't do it and neither does the EA. Although in fairness to the EA, they have at least, on my river repaired the banks in some places. 2, New builds in various forms i.e houses, roads in areas around rivers not only alters the drainage, but the removal of trees and vegetation adds to the amount of water as it's not sucked up, thus increasing flooding, but the Gov would have you think it's "climate change" It's not, it's them and their infrastructure projects. In respects to dwindling stocks of fish it would be prudent to look at how immigration has impacted the water ways, also the way lovie dovie snowflake types deal with the general licence. If land owners were allowed to get rid of the predation that doesn't belong on our waterways things would be a little better. For example, when i got to the first swim to start my fishing, 6 Goosanders were there!!! Anglers also need to take part in this as by enlarge they can the biggest hypocrites going. (I leave people to think about that one)? Predation is a big issue, not just with fish stocks, but things such as water voles. Again, the decline in the native Vole is something that is blamed on "climate change" when the real culprit is mink and a problem that the powers that be turn a blind eye to because it fits the political arena. If just a small amount of the money that is invested into the massive and sometimes white elephant infrastructure projects was invested into the upkeep of our waterways, we'd start to pull things back, but there's no profit in it........................
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I think you got that in one....saves me having a rant about the problems. As I see it the current generation don't realise that the rivers they see now is actually not the norm....its only the more senior years anglers that remember how the river used to look,and the fish stock that was in them...I felt it only fair to try and get the next generation to realise there are indeed many problems affecting the rivers. The snowflake brigade would have not a fallen tree or overweeded stretch touched,because it might affect the rare 3-eared horny toad or something...but what about the fish that used to inhabit the rivers ? They should read some of the old angling books on river species.
@poodle559
@poodle559 3 жыл бұрын
@@TAFishing There are many reasons why the now generation don't understand about the situation with our rivers Graeme, but from an angling point of view commercials and Carp hold a large potion of the blame. Although this includes many people, not just kids, people want everything on a plate and commercials fit that bill and as such people stay away from rivers. To get good results from a river you have to work at it, which is no bad thing, it makes you a better angler. Commercials in conjunction with tech is the dumbing down of fishing. It's a sorry state of affairs. I'd say that most people that fish commercials these days would be lost on a river, in fact i know it to be the case. If more people had an interest in our rivers, maybe a bit of something could be done.
@jechonias8765
@jechonias8765 3 жыл бұрын
@@TAFishing the irony is that the 3-eared horny toad and the fur bearing skink benefitted from the river management, yet were I grew up the local club had a pond that you could use in the closed season as well as the river, that lake would be packed on a bank holiday, but the last time I was there a couple of years ago it was only me there on it, as it had been let go and the pond was full of weed, and as the river they run. It used to support a small tackle shop now it is a 30 mile plus round trip for maggots since the shop went due to lack of visitors, the river used to have a big name for pike, I'm not sure there are any left.

Awesome video. Thank you. It's sad, we're facing the same problems here in the States with rivers & streams declining due to poor management. There is a State park back home in Connecticut (I now live in New York) that has (had) a very decent wide stream running thru it before the lake there that had this almost 90* bend in it that back when I was in my teens/early 20s, that was taken care of so well, you could practically catch decent sized trout (6+lbs) in it with a bare hook. Now, due to the 'powers that he's thinking the money is needed elsewhere, (like installing cable tv stations in the park's campground nd cell phone towers throughout the park), that the stream is so choked with weeds and that bend is now basically a 5 foot wide 'trickle' compared to years ago, ya can't even cast a line without getting tangled if you aren't super careful. And to actually hook anything???? This used to be one of the best trout streams in the county. I don't think anyone has caught a trout over 2 lbs if even in years!! A large pond near there which was also maintained yearly, was always a great place to catch sunfish and the like. It was always shallow, maybe 10 feet deep throughout, now....overgrown & choked with some areas less than 6 feet. Thank God it hasn't gotten that bad here in New York, but there are signs it's starting. All because nobody wants to spend the money to maintain these places. It's sad. Hopefully, it isn't the beginning of the end of our sport.

I think the issue with vegetation choking the river's flow is directly linked to all the crop fertilisers washing off the fields directly yo our rivers. As long as nobody (EA included), do anything with that, we will end up with exactly that issue, and give it another 10 more years and majority of smaller rivers and streams will be completely choked / overgrown with hardly any flow.

Agree with you about the rivers, I visited Burwell Lode in Cambridgeshire and was horrified that head high reeds and rushes lined both banks. I could hardly see any water and where I could it was much shallower than it used to be and badly weeded up as well. We've also lost access to stretches of rivers like the River Blackbourne and Little Ouse as clubs give up leases in favour of man made commercial style lakes and ponds. A very sad state of affairs but at least I have my memories of quality peaceful river fishing. The late, great John Wilson predicted this would happen years ago.

In all honesty I am amazed so many other waterways appear going the same way. Its only older anglers who can register the fact of what condition and stock the rivers had even 40 years ago. We had a comment from a gentleman in the States and it appears the decline is over there as well. I wonder what is happening with European rivers ?

Interestingly enough my fish partner and I were out fushing with different pastes.yesterday. Mine was more traditional Blue and Cheddar chesse where as JIm's was chocolate and hazel nut. Whereas theire was a cold northerly wind and bites where few and far betwwen but both pastes had a result , for a cost less than a tin of sweet corn. Inresprct of waterways you are so correct and I recall talking to a farmer in mid Wales telling me that the DofE had stopped them building of Dykes (opps meant to say irrigation channels) to drain the land and since doing so the river Teign flow was reduced and so had the fish stocks due to diminished spawning grounds , in what was once a famous trout and Salmon fishery. However, it's a combination of Cormants, Bevers, Minx and poor wate/river management that is bringing the demise of river angling or just a lacke of appreciation by the authorities - how much does the DofE recieve in rod licences and the Angling Trust (Ltd) recieve in subscribtions !!

From what I hear its been patchy with the silvers this year.I was talking with a matchman this past week who was after Roach and Silvers.He said they seemed to back off as he put more feed in so maybe it needs water temperatures to warm up,though it looks really cold next week.

It’s such a shame about or rivers I,m 71 and been fishing since I was 10. Those great fishing rivers have gone. I used to be able to catch 2lb roach regularly now if I get one that size it’s a special fish like wise where have the bleak, dace and gudgeon gone. Used have matches with fishing mates to see who could catch biggest gudgeon we would at least catch a dozen each. Oh how I miss those days

You can still do some awesome river fishing but not you have to go places like Norfolk Scotland Ireland to enjoy the fishing that used to be availible all over our nation now pollution poor management and very little funding for river maintenance ie levelling banks removing dams of weed/wood placed by beavers or nature they just don't do anything now basically letting the rivers clog and get filled with pollution

@poodle559

It needs more than rod licence money. That being said, i can confirm that at least on my local river that rod licence money pays for a re- stock of fish every year. The EA do turn up, at least once per year with a big tub of young fish, last year we got got Trout par, which we do every year, but we also got some Roach. They have also done repair work to some of the damaged banks. There's more to this that rod licence money.
@jasonselfe202
@jasonselfe202 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree poodle , I wasn’t saying for one minute that the rod license money would nearly be enough but there is no way that the license money is being spent in the right places & as I said in my first comment I would like to know exactly what it is spent on, certainly isn’t fish restocking around my area...
@poodle559
@poodle559 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonselfe202 I don't disagree with you, but i can only speak to what i see and in all fairness to the EA they put fish in the rivers around my area minimum once per year, sometimes twice, sometimes three times. Along with bank repairs some of which have been extensive they also turn up and check water quality from a water treatment works when asked to do so. Again, speaking for myself the £30 i spend on my rod licence is justified by what i see the EA do. Lets also be honest with ourselves here £30 is not a lot of money, especially when you consider that licence numbers are falling largely in part to the play station generation being addicted to tech, something we never had (thankfully) when i was a kid. We got our kicks by getting out on the bank, now kids stare at screens instead. There are many problems with the river systems that i could talk about for hours. Along with the many major problems our waterways suffer from such as land management, infrastructure projects, lack of river keepers and predation other things such as fishing clubs and people in general also hold some blame. It all adds up to a sorry situation that sadly i fear will not get any better.

Maybe as an American I view this moaning about English rivers through a different lens, but it seems to me that some of the things Graeme complains in some of his videos, are actually the cause of the decline in the rivers he seems to complain about as well. We often see Graeme bemoaning the lack of fallen trees being removed, or weeds being trimmed, or riverside vegetation being manicured or what not. Doing all of that to a river has a deleterious effect on the river. Fallen trees, while a pain for the angler cause the river flow to change, which is turn destabilizes silt banks, eventually washing silt off downstream. Weed banks channel flow keeping gravel banks clean and also trapping silt. Periodic spates (which always occur, even in the most sedate of spring creeks, flush out that silt, especially during the months when the weed growth is naturally low. Bank vegetation acts as riparian filters keeping all sorts of unwanted material out of the river and also provide bank stabilization. But the habits of English riverkeepers seem to have led to a virtual network of channelized waterways, which are worthy of Graeme's bitching and moaning. However, ironically enough the cause is the stuff he bemoans in other videos where he complains about the lack of attention being paid to the rivers. If they'd left these rivers alone all along they would probably be in a lot better shape than they are now.

Hmm, in the “chalk-stream” country the whole area was originally very wet and boggy (hundreds of years ago, even 1000 yrs ago). The water was channelled and became the river and side-stream system that you saw in this film. It is a managed system, originally for agriculture, and still maintained in places, for trout fisheries. However there are many pressures on that system.. modern farming methods allow unnatural nutrients and silt into the water, causing excessive weed growth, and there are even pressures from wannabe “ecologists” to allow the whole area to descend back to bog again. Water abstraction from water companies means there are lower flows - chalk water is easier to process for domestic use than that from other sources - and England is an overpopulated and thirsty (wasteful) nation. But these pressures are seen in other parts of the country too. And ‘global warming’ means less rainfall in total, and a change in seasonal rainfall rates. It’s not a simple problem and there is not a single fix. But if, as you say, ‘they were left alone’ it would still be a bog.. Les

We are the same age Graeme. It's a crying shame what's happened to our rivers and canals. The last year there have been 403,000 incidents of RAW sewage run off into our waterways. The water boards allow abstraction. Polluters self police so are free to discharge waste into rivers as long as they don't get caught. The uptake in commercial fisheries mean there is no money in river or canal fishing... because of the money. I even believe the close season only remains in force on our rivers because it pushes anglers on to commercials for 3 months... money. Our waterways will never recover.. there is money in trout fishing so that may remain. As you stated ... the 'youngsters' know no different. Because of money farmers will now run fields right to the edge of our rivers leading to phosphate and other chemicals run off into the water. Coarse river angling is doomed, as is canal angling. It's gone to far now to be recovered. We had the best of it. The only river system that has survived is the Wye and Usk... due to the foundation. Even they struggle with money and water quality, they survive with a group of like minded land owners. s
