Good video. It’s good to see someone who still uses the same floats and reel that I use. I’ve a full range of Stillwater blues, great sensitive floats, also a few Makin floats. Just goes to show, if you look after your kit, it can last a lifetime.

Or on rivers, bud! Granted most rivers today are controlled by clubs, but there are public stretches and you are allowed to remove a certain amount of fish from them. Always best to check local rules first, though, and personally I like to see the fish I catch swim away for the next person.

One of my favourite ways of fishing, close in on light gear. My best at the moment is landing a 10lb 3oz Mirror Carp on 4lb line and 13 foot match rod. But fishing that close in makes me think of a challenge if you are up for it. That is to do with the colour of clothing, does it really matter? Are fish really spooked by colour, or is it just any sudden movement? The challenge? Try catching that close in wearing a Hi-Vis , either a slip on vest or jacket.

Not exactly the situation for the antenna float, but anyway you caught. I love using an antenna on deeper still water on light tackle to catch fish from all depths. With the droppers spaced out evenly, you can count the time each dropper shot takes to settle and take the antenna down to it's new position. Any irregularity in the new positioning/ timing of the antenna tells you a fish has intercepted the hook bait and you strike even if the tip is still above the surface as this has taken it on the drop. A great way to catch fish throughout the water column, so pleasing when you have skillfully balanced the rig to do as intended.

The general rule is-if you can't see the hook,leave it where it is and cut the line as far down as you can. With barbless hooks using a disgorger is a doddle-any tackle dealer or fellow angler will show you how-never be afraid to ask.

I know what you are saying bud, i was not taking issue with it as you are technically right. Some fisheries would take offence to it, But there is a huge difference between a toss and a throw. All Graemes were under armed. Every fisherman does it. He did not throw any fish. The Perch was to small for the net. Come on bud, stop the fishing policing and just enjoy a old very wise man with a great personality fishing and making us smile for free. Not much i life is free, and Graeme and Mike have made some fantastic video's. Best one being the catching fish on Jelly Babies and Graeme losing it on a sugar rush and getting wind lol

I find closed face better for trotting on a river as it has a slighter larger spool diameter than a fixed spool reel so less line memory,and less float disturbance as it goes down the river.Less float disturbance = more bites.

I don't have time to fish for big carp,but its a 35lb river common ,which was nice. 99% of the time when I fish, the fish takes the float under the water, I strike but the hook just comes out, pops out the water. iv tried changing the hooks bigger and smaller between size 8 to 12 with a maggot or two or two sweet corns but as I say the fish takes the bait and I can never seem to hook them :(
@SWINDLA87
@SWINDLA87 7 жыл бұрын
Rickalls Outdoors Try a smaller hook like an 18-14. Also make sure that you're not fishing over depth so spend a couple of minutes plumbing up around your swim, that way you have a general idea of how deep the water is in your swim rather than just the specific point that you're fishing.
@RickallsBushcraft01
@RickallsBushcraft01 7 жыл бұрын
ok, thank you. how having a smaller hook helps? I would of thought if its bigger it more likely to stick, but I don't know enough. how does a smaller hook stick better? how fishing over depth effect the hooking? sorry for all the questions but I haven't been coarse fishing for over 15 years ands forgotten it all lol. cheers

Rickalls Outdoors The chances are you're missing bites because the hook is too big so the fish can nick the bait without the hook ever going into the fishes mouth. If you're fishing over depth or too deep then the fish could take the bait off the hook before the float has gone all the way under. Is that easy enough to understand? Just ask if you have any more questions ☺

So try addressing those 2 points I made. 1.Hook size 2.Depth There's a really good video on KZbin that explains it in a very simple manner called: A beginners guide to float fishing with Matt Hayes

I love the fact you are catching on a renovated rod bought for £1 from a skip. You could be using all sorts of top gear sponsored by big manufacturers but no you keep it real ( no pun intended) proving you can catch on the most budget of tackle, that it is an accessible hobby for beginners, even pensioners too. The top end tackle manufacturers must hate you….good!😂

Why is it that at these commercial fisheries you always get people talking that can be heard right across the lake/pool? Have Humans lost the ability to whisper or keep their voices down? Or is it because they want everyone else to hear what they've got to say?
