Great video...love the "tap test" can't believe others haven't used this to measure dust/adherence of pastel. Should try a review on Uart paper as well.

Thank you so much!!! Yes, Ithink it's an important aspect of pastel papers! I would love to get some Uart paper but it's hard to find here in Greece! I'm keeping my eyes open and I'll definitely go for it at some point, just trying to find a reasonable price :)

Myrto, this was an excellent comparison review. I’m learning pastels now…been more of a wc artist. I had heard of some of the cons about Sennelier La Carte, but even PastelMat may have some downsides and you can still get beautiful work with La Carte. It really depends on personal preference, what look you want to achieve, how you work, whether you like to have a lot of blending or as many layers as possible or whether you do a lot of loose painting with bold strokes (that’s what is being emphasized in the course I’m taking now, The Painterly Landscape w/Alain Picard.) Another big consideration, especially when learning, is price. I live in the US and purchased UArt sanded paper bc that’s what’s recommended for this online class..that or PastelMat, but haven’t used either yet…only a sheet of sanded paper that I cut and I think is from a company called Colorfix, but I wasn’t thrilled with it as it didn’t seem too great w/layering and there was tons of dust. I’ve also recently bought Ampersand Pastelbord, a hard surface that is textured, slightly sanded and the your work is already mounted on a hard surface. I haven’t tested that one out either. It may be pricy in EU or elsewhere outside of US, but it’s pretty pricy here than even sanded paper bc it’s already mounted. It gets pretty good reviews on Amazon and overall, all of Ampersand’s products get very good reviews. Sorry for my long comment. Thanks again. 😊👍

I appreciate the comparison! You came to the same conclusion as I did, Pastelmat is for detail and Pastel Card is for bold strokes. If you can get a hold of Canson Mi Teintes Touch (Has to be the touch variant, not the regular Mi Teintes), I think you should compare that one to Pastelmat. It's the most similar surface I've found but there are no videos about it online, so you'd be creating a valuable resource.

Thank you so much for watching! Glad you agree :D And thank you for the suggestion! It has been in my radar for quite sometime now, but never got around to actually buying some to try! I'll keep that in mind for sure!!!

Great comparison. Thankyou. Both are expensive here in Australia. I'm going to test out the Australian Art Spectrum sanded paper too.

Hi! Thank you for your video. Could you try panpastels underneat pencils on other papers? I was considering buying pan pastels and pastelmat to work with them precisely like you are saying doesn´t work... so, again, thank you for the video I´m glad I found it... What would be your advise if I´m persuiting for realism and detailed work?

Hello, thank you so much for watching! I'm afraid I don't have much experience with other papers since I really enjoyed working on pastelmat apart from the pan pastels thing. Honestly, the best way that I found to cover the paper quickly and have an underpainting going is an alcohol wash with soft pastels, which might work with pan pastels too 🤔 It's been a while since I last did any art so I'm afraid I won't have any updates on these experiments, I wish I could be more helpful!

Your tests were interesting comparative with pastel card vs pastelmat! You might chose blue or green colors for yours tests which will be more visible! Indeed, even if your pastel colors choice weren’t the best on the brown sand paper, I can see Pastel card is a rougher paper as well as Uart with 400grits and pastelmat is comparable with Uart with 600 grits, even with 800 grits will be softer texture for western people in USA and Canadian particularly! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦! A big Thanks for your video comparative testing with those French sand pastel cardboard! I love those even if there are pricy! But transparent gesso is sandy as pastellist according to my personal point of view! ❤😊

I use Sennelier pastel pencils, they seem to lay nicely over pastel. I also use pastelmat ..but I will have a go with the pastel card now ...thanks for the comparison

A nice insight, for a pastels newbie like me. Do you prefer pastels over the other painting mediums?
@MyrtosArtCorner3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! Happy you found it useful! I do actually! I tend to get bored easily so I've tried pretty much every medium and subject at some point in my art journey. I love oils too, but I find the process of cleaning tedious and the layering relatively slow. I like gouache for sketching too! But after all this time, I find myself returning to pastels over and over again! And I do have the most experience with them! I think there is something about them that keeps me hooked :)
@tanyamattiss3 жыл бұрын
@@MyrtosArtCorner Haha, I tried pastels some years ago once, but all the dust let me move on to another medium. But I still like the looks of it, pastelpaintings somehow have such a lightness in them, it nice to look at :)
@MyrtosArtCorner3 жыл бұрын
@@tanyamattiss I agree on the look!!! They are dusty too, indeed, it is a mess :) I use pastelmat, so the dust is much much less, but still, my fingers are constantly dirty, no matter how many times I wash them :P If I'm honest, I don't know exactly who I feel so attracted to them, I just do!

My conclusion to this is that if you do work in lots of layers and depth with much details you'd have to go with pastelcard but if you're going with just few layers and that "pastel texture" to your work you'd reach out for pastelmat.

I was counting the blending on pastelcard and there were at least 34 streaks at pastelcard with 3 additions of paspastel, at 50 sweeps there was 5 layers, whereas the pastelmat was filled with panpastel 3 times at tenth swipe. I know how important it is to blend those panpastels on every layer so that really wasn't a fair test on pastelmat. I love the pastelcard and hate to see it lose on these tests but when you don't mix the pastels into the paper they don't really take any more pastels on top. I was hope to see some testing with the same amount of blending on this video. This was helpful though, even if I was looking tips for different things. Thank you for this. :)
@katrikinnunen89692 жыл бұрын
And also that much of panpastels at once is too much for any pastelpaper without blending.
