I have a PhD in a scientific field (yet I dream of doing art all day). Your thorough method speaks to me, as does the info for a busy artist! I have a day job and lots of non-art responsibilities and distractions. I don’t have time to figure this out. Your tests and expert analysis will save money, yes, but also frustration! For those who have to steal 5 min to a few hours here and there, this information is SO important. It allows us more time to languish in the joy of art and more time in that meditative zone. Thank you!

Best thing to tone the uart with is ink or watercolour. Gouache and acrylic will fill the tooth more quickly. What some pastellists do is use an alcohol or water or mix of both and do the underpainting in pastel and wet it with the alcohol or water or mix of both. Isopropyl alcohol needs to be 70 percent or less if using neat, not the 90 percent one - you can use the 90 percent one diluted with water though, 30/70 - the 70 being water. Both ways the pastel becomes like paint and wetting it fixes it to the surface. Hope that helps.

Hi Jason, I really appreciate this video comparing the different papers! You are saving us a lot of time, money and headaches! Thank you! Especially regarding the pastel card. I was really surprised how easy the rough surface came off! important for people who use markers as accents, too. or fixative sprays all going on wet at first.

Thanks for the review. I was surprised at the surface coming off of the Sennelier Pastel Card. I buy the UART in rolls of 56 inches by 10 yards. I saw a review of the 800 grit UART done with just regular colored pencils (not pastel pencils). Since it can take multiple layers of pencil, you may want to give it a try.

They're both 360gsm. When a type of paper is pasted to a board, you don't add to the GSM number. I used to do comics on 310 GSM Schoellershammer paper. Sometimes I used the loose sheet version and sometimes (usually for covers) the same paper sold mounted on a board. They're both 310 GSM Schoellershammer paper even though the one mountain on a board is naturally heavier altogether.

Hi Jason, thanks for your Review vids, very interesting. I have tried Uart several times, cannot stand it (mind I have only tried it with pencils). Find it doesn't blend well. Pastelmat is fantastic, but I have recently started using Colourfix Smooth by Art Spectrum an Australian company, it is very much like using Pastelmat. Love it. Has a better price point too here in Australia. I use these substrates for coloured pencil and for pastels.

Excellent comparison. Like you, I have a favorite, and it is UArt. I've been using pastels since 1944. I have a technique of using UArt 400 or 500, adding broad strokes of musltiple colors over most of the surface, then spraying alcohol over the surface, then using a brush to spread the pastel strokes, working from light to dark. It gives a great underpainting. Many years ago I found that after taping the edges of pastl mat down, then removing the tape at the completion of the painting, the surface would tear in an unsightly manner. There is a KZbin video "Pastel and Alcohol" by Bill Westerman that demonstrates the process. Thanks again for the video comparison. BW

I recently tried the Sennelier Pastel Card, and it was ok, but the texture wore off on the bottom edge while I was working on it, leaving a shiny white surface. Unacceptable for that price. I won't be buying it again I'm disabled, draw on my lap sitting in a recliner, that's how the bottom of the paper rubbed off. I've been using Maimoufin sanded pastel paper and I'm hooked. Depending on the color, it costs between $2.30 and $3.00 per sheet. I can layer as much as I want, it's beautiful. I didn't like it the first time I used it, but after trying to draw a portrait on Canson Mi-Teints paper and nearly threw it out my front door, I tried the Maimoufin again and fell in love. My first order wss dark grey and I just ordered earth tones and black. So nice not to be frustrated trying to get more layers.

Thanks for another great unbiased, honest review. I have a hand injury and recently purchased your Pan Pastel Wildlife set and are loving them, however, I do not love the prices of the tools. I’ve heard that makeup applicators are a good inexpensive alternative - have you tried any? Regarding paper, I have been experimenting and the 800p sanded I love for soft pastels is ripping the knife covers in no time. I haven’t seen anything from you about Artfix Spectrum which seems to be recommended by some professionals. Pastelmat is really my choice for Panpastels, I will keep my sanded for when I use soft Pastels on their own.

Hi Jason thanks so much for this video. Very helpful. About the “blowing the dust” part, I blow the dust of my pastels and yes I’ve got saliva dots by mistake on some of my pastelmat art. But it dries so quickly and you can cover it up so quickly, it’s like nothing happened. I think using water like you used in the example has to be different, saliva and water are different things :)

Thats pretty interesting, I love Pastelmat paper. I think its just great to work on... Are you using any kind of fixative on your pastell drawings? I'm asking because a few weeks before I totally ruined a protrait on Pastelmat with pastel fixative. The portrait looked like he had the measels and there was now way to rescue it.... I had the right distance for the spraying, the stuff isn't old or so and it was a pretty expensive company.

I started out using pastelcard from sennelier, because I liked the colors, texture and weight of it; but when I learned you cannot use any wet media it really turned me off of it. It’s not so much because I need to do an underpainting, but the idea that if a painting I spent many hours creating got caught in a flood or even just got something splashed on it, it could be destroyed?! Ah...no.

I did my first drawing on pastelmat paper recently and I have spent about 15 hours on it. I am having a problem with one small spot on the drawing where the chalk does not want to stick to the paper at all. When I try to press a little harder it just removes more of the chalk. Hello, first time on your channel..great information..I have a question. What paper would be advisable for a portrait 30 x40 in. When I was in college I would use plain gray large board, using pastel and watercolor to paint my friend's pets and scapes. Now I paint in oils and want to go back to pastels as well. From one artist to another, what would you recommend regarding gray boards? I'm glad I ran into your channel, very educational..thank you.

Hi, I am new to pastel painting and used pastelmat for the first time yesterday ( using Rembrandt soft pastels ). I thought it was a complete nightmare for blending on, using my fingers. The only way l could blend was when using a piece of pipe insulator, with some force. This on first two layers. Also when pastels left streaks, these were hard to remove. Do you have any ideas on how to correct these issues or where I am going wrong, particularly why i couldnt blend using my fingers? Thanks for sharing your own results and experiences.
@wildlifeartjm

This type of paper hold the pastel well. That is its benefit. I show how I blend on all my pastel videos here on my channel
@PoeticLite
@PoeticLite 6 жыл бұрын
I regret buying the panpastels - Ive tried them on pastelmat and other pastel paper and I think they are awful; blocky colour and will not blend. The sponge 'socks' to put on to the knives rip before even using. And unless you pay the extra £20.00 for the trays, what a faff to use the small dishes. For the money, no, not worth it at all. I would much prefer to stick with regular soft pastels, for which I have had great results. Sadly, I believe the pre-sale hype is louder and more effective than the usefulness of the product. I am very disappointed.
@ricoviselli
@ricoviselli 5 жыл бұрын
@@PoeticLite totally disagree. if applicators are ripping is it the sponge's fault or does the cause lie somewhere else. the product requires a delicate touch, the extra pressure only damages the applicator. the wedges can take more pressure but if you treat fine brushes by squashing the paint on the paper then the result is the same. the pans and trays keep things organized but a shelf to hold the pans works well for me as I paint with sponges. I am happy to hear that you have found a form of pastel that works for you.

Thanks so much for this video! I had actually been thinking about trying out the Pastel Card, and this video definitely helps me save my money on that! I only recently got some of the PastelMat, which I've been wanting for a long time, and like said by Becky, I got it from DickBlick.com. I absolutely love the PastelMat, and I've been also thinking about trying the UArt. Thanks to you, I know which number to try out. I would like to ask one question, though, what do you use to sharpen your Derwent Pastels? I just recently bought the wooden box set, but in attempting to sharpen them, they broke a lot, and now I have at least 10 out of the set of 72 that are very short. I have only started using them in one picture, but not much at all, because the sharpening has upset me so much about them. What do you use? I have tried a manual Carl Angel sharpener and straight razors. Neither prevented the constant breakage.

Pastel pencils need to be "sharpened" by a cutter (You carefully peel off the wood around the pencil). Regular sharpeners will only destroy them. You can glue back bigger chunks of pastel with instant glue. If you need a sharp point, use sandpaper. I also found out that electric sharpeners do a decent job. Just make sure the sharpener's pencil opening is not hugging the pastel pencil. A wide sharpener (eg for jumbo pencils) will generally sharpen a regular sized pastel pencil fairly well. Just hold the pencil straight while the sharpener is running.
