On Sunday, June 9, 2024, Dr. Tony Evans, pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas announced that he is stepping away from pastoral duties due to a sin he committed "a number of years ago."
In this video, I break down what we know right now and offer some lessons we can take from this as followers of Jesus and as pastors/church leaders.

When is the right time, if I may ask you? Why shouldn't people of God ask questions? And yet you expect them to pray for the sinner out of ignorance without knowing their sin? What is even wrong in asking questions when there are questionable conducts? People need to know the truth and the CINFESSION of the believer who sinned, due to our unavoidable corruptible human nature, must be complete and honest. In fact, the earlier the truth is told in earnest, the better for the Holy Church of Christ and for the restoration of the believers' faith.

Pastors are Shepherds and held to higher acountanility. There are consequences to our actions. Yes we forgive and when there is repentance Jesus forgives. This does not mean they can return to 5 fold ministry. It is the world we do not judge. As far as believers we know them by their fruit. Distrust and kissing respect Is one of the consequences. pastors are to Sheperd the sheep not be dishonest and deceiving. Double accountability. Trust is not restored immediately it will take time

I just want to encourage you sir. I have been blessed by your mistry over the years. I'll never forget a sermon you preached about a football team, and you worked that thing over and bled right into the emptiness for some of us because we didn't ask God for what was needed... I played that sermon over the phone to several of my friends, some of whom lived in a different city and or state... One of um began to cry out in tongues...as I held the phone up to my tv for her to hear it... The others were loving it too. I longed to be able to speak to you so I could ask you to send me that sermon... I even got a chance to speak to your wife before her passing... I was trying to see if I could get a copy of that sermon.. I don't remember the title, but I remember it started off with a football team....it was amazing... and missing out of things ... I'd love to get that one. (PLEASE..) 🙏🤗 I'm praying for you. KEEP your head up... (Because 👉 'ALL HAVE COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD...) GOD BLESS... 💖💔💖

My wife and I will keep Pastor Evan and his family in prayer. We all are sinners in need of Jesus. We all must trust in God. Personally we don’t want to know why Pastor Evan’s sin was and why he is now confessing he had sin. As long as Pastor Evan’s has a personal relationship with Jesus and has repented his sin and is trusting in God to help fully restore him. Remember King David that he went a long time after he committed adultery with Bathsheba. King David would have gone longer in not confessing his sin but instead it took God to send the Prophet Nathan to confront David of his adultery and murder. We cannot wonder why someone goes years of unconfessed sin. It is between God and the sinner. We as Christians need to pray for the pastor and his family and give them our support.
@gramajan4
@gramajan4 22 күн бұрын
David didn't go very long before he was confronted with his sin. It was less than 9 months, and he immediately repented and was utterly remorseful and grieved that he had sinned against God. We don't see that kind of humility in this world today, and we need to, especially from our pastors and teachers. We must wonder why a pastor goes years with unconfessed sin, because we must be able to trust that they are righteous and true before God. Otherwise, they are not worthy to be teachers of the Word, leaders entrusted with guiding God's precious people. If it is a big enough sin that he stepped down from his position, it isn't just "between him and Jesus" as I'm seeing all over the comments. If he confessed because he was "caught", that is important, especially for his congregation, to know. I agree with one statement that you made: we need to pray for Tony Evans and his family. He will deserve our support when he truly repents to his congregation in honest humility.

Agree we should be praying for him and his family. However by not telling the whole story it is now open to speculation which does nothing for his reputation,his family and certainly not the church. Now w Robert Morris' little scandal and the fact Morris tried to white wash the fact he was SA a child of 12 is not a young lady ( suggesting she was legal) Tony is even more open to nonsense. Fact is we were all sinners but once you come into Jesus you have the Holy Spirit to guild and rebuke you. If you choose to be a teacher you have a higher standard. In the past 100 years the church has taken focus off Jesus and accommodated the world. Remember Jim Baker? Worshiping sex is easy to fallen people but we are empowered to not follow the world. My heart is broken for the families first then the foolish men but mostly for the fact human choices are detracting from the Savior. Meanwhile a lost broken world watches and the fact is we all humans need the Lord as he is not as these liars in the pulpit represent him. Morris should be in jail. Evans should have stepped down and left the pulpit and Jim Baker should be selling insurance not playing preacher.

We as Christians need to pray for Pastor Tony Evans. Romans 3:23: For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. I would say that all sin, generally speaking, is evil. But not all sin is the same. I hear a lot of people use the phrase, "sin is sin." I think that statement can be misleading. Because although sin is evil, not all sin is equal. There are some sins that are more evil than others. And there are some less evil. Now depending on the type of sin that occurs, the church's duty is to properly and biblically handle the matter. For the sake of the church as a whole. And to the glory and honor of God.

Whether you stepped down by force or choice, thank you for almost 50 years of great, public service. Pastor, the Body of Christ is hurting and the world is looking at how you come out of "surgery". So, rest well in Christ as you fight the good fight of faith. Your labor has not and will not be in vain. Be encouraged. Thank you for this video. I listened to entire video. Well done! Excellent. I agree that telling the truth is required for repentance. Otherwise, we are protecting ourselves and our churches at the expense of those sinned against. I agree that if pastors truly repent in the way you described and the Bible commands, forgiveness should be given and trust can be restored in time, but it takes time like you said. And the “process” should be explained. I agree. Thank you for your own humility and understanding that we all fall and are sinners in need of God’s grace. Pastors carry a double responsibility (not double perfection) required of them to be honest and humble. Yet, pastors (and church leaders supporting the pastor) have the greatest temptation to hide and cover up sin. It appears that Tony Evans is being contrite to step down, but I agree, he has not confessed his sin. That is required. I will pray for him and other pastors as you asked. I’m the daughter and granddaughter and sister to pastors. God bless you and your ministry here!

We are not and no way owed an explanation! I do not lose trust in a person because I don’t know details of what they have done and asked God’s forgiveness! Let us all be careful unless we all fall!! Maybe we all need to take notes and get our own lives and house and order! Thank God for His Great Grace and Mercy that we don’t get what we deserve!! Amen 🙏🏾❤️Blessings 💕💕💕

It seems to me that he's either threatened to be exposed by someone or is already exposed to the church, but either way people loves to hear other people's dirt so they can be judge jury and executioner. He's not obligated to broadcast the details of his sin to everyone, that is between him and Almighty God, cuz none of us can forgive sin and we are certainly not perfect either. That's why Jesus said " he who is without sin cast the first stone" It will come out in due time cuz there'll be someone who won't stop digging till they know what it is.

It hurts worse when a person in leadership commit sin and hides it and does not tell no one for a long time until they get caught. But it hurts less once someone sins in leadership and comes forward and admits their wrongdoing and steps down, it don’t hurtas bad. But we don’t matter, but God does and it hurts the Lord very much. But at the same time with true repentance, God is willing to forgive and forget. ❤

For those of us who study and read the Bible, we KNOW that most of the men and women God used in mighty ways had committed sins, even King David, who God described as a man after his heart (1 Samuel 13:14) and whom God promised never to forsake, but to stand by and to be with him always (Psalm 89:20-37). So surely if God had compassion for and forgiveness toward Noah, Moses, King David, and so many other men and women who He used mightily in the Bible, God will also forgive and will continue to use a humble, repentant, and contrite Pastor Tony Evans.

You are diectly on point and set apart from the world and Holy. Great discernment and critical thinking. Like minded on all critical points even before I viewed your admonishing of this man in senior pastor clothing. He's hiding, he's afraid, he's ashamed of himself which means he has not accepted nor trust the Father's freely given forgiveness at confession of missing the mark which is our Father's heart. There is no transparency therefore no accountability, this fake confession is cowardly lacking in the heavenly attribute of courage. So this serious fall was covered up for years from behind the pulpit, what changed?

I am praying for Tony Evans, his family, the congregation and Elders at OCBF. I daily pray for my own pastor. Thank you for the reminder to do so. Because Dr Evans refers to his 48 years in ministry it seems doubly vague to refer to the time of his failing in such a vague manner. Should this happen within my home church I would rely on my Elders to determine the process of restoration and I would not need to be privy to the nature of the sin, when it occurred, nor the restoration process. On the other hand, knowing those things might make my prayer for my pastor more effective. Thank you for using John Piper’s explanation; I agree with him and I agree with what you said in this podcast.

I believe it’s absolutely possible for Tony Evans to be restored to a leadership position. As long as it’s all in agreement, my example I use is the great Jimmy Swaggart he did it right he got on national TV in front of his congregation and repented to the congregation and to God And then he took some time off years and then he came back and look what he’s done his ministry is better than ever. His preaching is better than ever although the last few years he’s gotten too old but till about 2017 the message of the crosshas changed thousands of lives so God bless you, Tony Evans. I hope you come clean with everybody. You come highly recommended by the great doctor David Jeremiah, so to me that says a lot.

For me, I have to say I can totally see your point... but I also think it may be a bit off base. I agree that, particularly in recent years, we have seen pulpit "confessions" that have ultimately been revealed to be half hearted, manipulative, or just plain dishonest. And I have seen some of these people ask their members for exactly as you've said... a "specific forgiveness" with "a vague admittance of wrongdoing without any specific confession and repentance." And to be honest, initially, I had all the same questions as what you brought up... they are very valid. However, here's where my view differs as it pertains to Dr. Evans. Based on the information provided in his statement, he never asked his members for forgiveness. It sounds to me that as a leader, he is simply being considerate enough to explain to them what is happening rather than just creating a sudden change with no explanation. But as a leader, he is also exercising wisdom and not providing more info than is necessary. It truth, he did tell them everything the "needed" to know. Everything elese, are details they would "want" to know so as to satisfy the curiosity or the emotional instability of their flesh. That is not his responsibility to soothe. It is ours. And as mature believers, who are on meat... not milk..., we must recognize that whatever the sin, that is between him and the Lord. He owes me no explanation. I don't need to know if was lying, cheating, or stealing. As his sister in Christ, all I need to know is that 1. my brother has fallen short... 2. that GOD is a faithful redeemer... 3. that if Dr. Evans is sincere and submits that sin to the Lord, that he WILL be restored, and 4. that everything else ain't none of my business. I have my OWN "field" to plow. Trying to figure things out with Dr Evans' issues is a strategic warfare tactic of the enemy to get me distracted with something that has nothing to do with me. As Jesus said to Peter, regardless of what happens with John, what business of that is yours? We have to learn to prayer for our neighbors, put our hand to the plow, and mind OUR (Kingdom) business (assignment). If that includes being in his inner circle, understanding details, and being an accountability partner then great. If that's not our assignment, then the details are none of our business and we should seek God and GODLY Christian therapists to help us reconcile the emotions that come along with what has happened. But that's just "my" personal take (No shade on anyone else's. We feel what we feel ❤)
@sjg5994
@sjg5994 29 күн бұрын
We have to remember that we can't look at passages isolated. All matter together. Jesus speaking mind your own business is to someone speculating WHO would do the sin. There is no speculation on who. It's exposed the issue is with Tony Evans. Jesus was clear on WHAT the sin was...betrayal. The Bible is clear on sins being exposed in many situations from OT to NT. It does mean something when priests and Levites do certain things not allowed for them, but ok with regular people. The specifics of what not to do is clear. And as guy spoke, certain sins were handled a specific way in the restoration process. And to be vague to say "I sinned so I'm stepping down" cannot be overlooked. We all have sinned and fallen short of His Glory. We all sin. But obviously something is different if that sin causes you to step down from your pastoral job if you are a sinful person anyway. Think about that. His sin caused him to lose his position....yet we're sinful people. Obviously it was egregious to him not being able to stay in that role anymore. It's just the truth. We gotta stop minimizing the importance of scripture and leadership roles.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Personal perspective-only follows (and no slight to your reply) - no one needs to ask forgiveness of anyone, but Jesus Christ. The second (personal comment) hits a little closer to home, but I honestly hope no one puts any human being between themselves and their relationship with Jesus Christ. That is a recipe for disaster...losing their faith. I'm overly skeptical of any teacher of the faith...even this channel took me a little time to warm up to. We are Benjamin, it's in our genes. 😂

Pastors and teachers must publicly grieve and express sorrow over their sin. Tony Evans has yet to do this. Evans youngest son Jonathan, told the congregation that his father will return to the pulpit. He also said he only knows what everyone else knows. Evans daughter, Priscilla, is married to KLove radio's board member, now board president Jerry Shirer. The elder at Oak Cliff told the congregation "we declare & decree that ....." Oak Cliff promotes Joyce Myer & TD Jakes bc Oak Cliff is a Word of Faith congregation.

I agree with you. People are blindly standing behind him, no matter what the word of God says about this sort of thing. IMHO: We are all curious & speculative regarding his sin but I'm not sure we have a RIGHT to know. Exposure could involve publically exposing & humiliating an innocent person who was involved. I think a healthy form of love covering a multitude of sins, is to accept this resignation, and keep Pastor Tony in prayer. My biggest prayer is that he stays connected to a body of believers, and has people journeying with him, as the Lord restores Him. Depending on the nature of what may have happened, if I were a member, I would personally encourage him to remain a member of the church like he said. If I were a member, or if this were to happen in my own church, I would be more then content with that. My focus, and I would encourage as many members as possible, we may have a wounded brother (or soldier) in the game, and forget about our natural desire to know juicy gossip, but prioritize a brother over all. I pray at least 1 trusted elder or friend knows the full details and extent of what happened for Tony's sake.

TO MUCH IS GIVEN MUCH IS REQUIRED! So if a Pastor falls because of molestation of a child you think that they should ask forgiveness and STAY IN THE PULPIT??? (not saying T. E. Did this ) but somethings we do even after Repentance does not mean we shudnt step down on certain platforms if the Lord leads. The problem is people worship these leaders and people look at them like they can do no wrong and when they fall we are either shocked or make excuses and want them to continue on in the ministry they are part of. Let God lead them and we should get our eyes off them and look unto JESUS (Hebrews 12:2).

I totally agree with your comments. A couple of years ago I began hearing Tony Evans when my daughter encouraged me to. I enjoyed his sermons but I was truly thrown back when he remarried so quickly after his wife’s passing and I began to watch less and less now this. I grew up in a Pentecostal home since I was born I am now 64 so this comes as no surprise when ministers preachers fall from God’s Grace. My anger is how they want to just hide and not come clean and admit their wrong doing . They want for their congregation the sinners to admit their sins why does it not apply to them? They hide behind the elders for several months then they come back as if nothing ever happened. It’s just not right and they are deceiving so many innocent Christian’s and they go and do same thing in their lives and think that that is what Christianity is. God help us.

Sir, I totally agree with you. I will start by saying that Mr. Evans did the right thing by stepping down, as opposed to some false ministers who more or less wait 'til their sins find them out (as the scriptures say they will) publicly then try to get sympathy from ignorant followers instead of repenting and stepping down (likely because they don't wanna lose their tithes or status). There are few ministers who I have enjoyed listening to, who are actually learned and effective, and Mr. Evans is one of them, so I am definitely disappointed but not surprised. The Church is altogether in a backslid state and Jesus is coming back for a Bride that is "without spot or blemish." I will absolutely pray for Mr. Evans and the Church as a whole. NOW... the scripture (as you listed) is clear about the qualifications of shepherds (bishops, deacons, teachers, elders, mothers, etc.). In addition to what you already explained, the scripture calls for ministers to be "blameless . . ." I find it hard to believe that people are so easy to brush off an such an infraction that has apparently been covered up for however many years while the man still preached and collected your tithes and offering under the guise of "truth", while knowingly lying to himself, his family, you, and most importantly the Holy Spirit. Read what happened to Ananias and Saphira in the book of Acts who lied to the Holy Spirit. 1 Timothy also speaks of ministers who have their consciences seared in the last days . . . these men are literally are not even afraid of God's judgement. Not to mention the woe God gives to those who cause His children to go astray in Matthew 18 (and you have to know many people will lose faith in the church seeing all this deception/secrets in the church). All that said (and of course we can go on), Yes, we have all sinned and fallen short--as everyone is holding strong to; AND when true saints sin, we do have an advocated with father 1 John 1-2. But that does not change God's expectation for a minister (Timothy, Titus, Thess. etc). Saul/Paul murdered Christians and yet was forgiven and became one of the greatest leaders of the Church, but he did not keep persecuting Christians during his ministry, nor ignore what he did. We use our testimonies to help people when we are truly repented, not leaving people wondering what is he hiding, OR if there is someone out there who were/are still hurting from whatever it was. Remember the Samaritan who tried to half-truth Jesus and he told her she had 5 husbands and the one she was with now wasn't even hers. She ended up being the mean to bring others to Christ. But I think in due time he should be forthright; and he may feel more free as well. At the same time, depending on what it is, he may have little ones, grandkids, family etc. that it may harmful/embarrassing/uncomfortable for them to have that information out there. Ultimately, forgiveness for sin is in the Lord's hands, and I do pray Mr. Evans is sincere. Ministers are to be held at a higher standard, and him stepping down and saying he is going to worship along with the congregation does show admirable humility that is rare. I pray that God bless you all in your walk with Him always, and Thank you for posting and listening as well.

We don't know what sin that was committed. However, the Bible said in Numbers 32:23 , " be sure our sins will find us out"

God is our Redeemer. However, trust can only be restored through the process of accountability and transparency. Only God knows when our hearts and minds are fully restored. Pastor Evans has taken the first step in the right direction. Praise God, he is working out his faith. Blessings to him and his family because whatever the case may be, he has been a blessing to ours. 💜🙏

I didn’t hear Tony Evans ask the people for forgiveness, he doesn’t need to. He seeks forgiveness from God, not man. I don’t need to know specifics, however, I do ask what moved him to do this now, at this time, and not “years ago?”

He most definitely should ask his congregation for forgiveness. He has been over them & leafing them.. He also has made millions off of them.

Just because he hasn’t openly confessed his sin…what gossipy folks are itching to hear!!! He owes nothing to no one but GOD and his family! He’s a great Man of GOD!! He is not sinless just like we aren’t! As Jesus said, “let those without sin cast the first stone”…NONE OF US ARE SINLESS so drop your stones!!! Lift Pastor Tony up in prayer 🙏🏽. What the sin is doesn’t matter!!! The best thing about it is that “NOTHING can separate him from the love of GOD” Romans 8:31-39. GOD LOVES HIM and so does his brothers and sisters in CHRIST! Praying for healing and restoration for you Pastor Evans and Family 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
