Just a Few Acres Farm

The life of a broiler chicken on our farm. We raise our chickens on pasture, moving them to fresh grass every day. We have day-old chicks shipped from a hatchery. We raise them, butcher them, and package them on the farm. The kids help out, and our work is usually mixed with some comedy!

Good video. Would like to see how you process the chickens. I know the killing part would cause some people to complain but for that section you might be able show the equipment and a quick explanation how.

It's very interesting to see it done this way. I realise you are making a living from it, so have to do it far more intentsively than me, but I have 6 laying hens in twice the space that your birds have there. Your system is far, far better than how they're reared industrially enclosed itn sheds. Mine are pretty spoiled, I give them them allsorts of fresh veg, fruit etc. I don't eat them, yet will pop 'em off when they're old and sick and can't get better. They live for over 5 years. I just eat the delicious eggs. Indeed, it's eggs again for dinner tonight!

@@JustaFewAcresFarm Yes I know that. I know my birds have a lot of space and I could have ten times the amount in the same area. I just couldn't manage all the eggs! Still like pasture raised chooks and your system looks good. I know the effort it must take, hope the birds appreciate it.

Thanks Kim! I have thought about doing a video about processing, but have a couple of concerns about it. One: KZbin has rules about violence & graphic images and I don't want to run afoul of that. Two: Butchering is brutal no matter how humanely it's done, and I'm worried it would be offensive to some. I've looked at comments on some other channels' videos where the animal rights people were angry at the content, and things can get vicious with them.

@@JustaFewAcresFarm Thanks Pete! Yeah. I totally understand where ur coming from. Maybe at some point the public will know that industrial livestock farming is so inhumane as opposed to what u and other small farmers do to put food out there! Be well!

I was hoping for that same type of video. But understand the hang up on posting one. Would be able to produce a video on your chicken butchering process that you could make available through and email link? That way only those of us interested in the information would have access? Just an idea. I am hoping to have a small farm up and running in about 3-6 months. Love the videos and all the great info!

I love your videos and learn so much. How about a video showing your tools and equipment for butchering and explaining processes without featuring any chickens? Whatever works for you. So you can sell your farm butchered chicken at the farmers market? Unfortunately, it’s not allowed where I live. Must be done in a UFDA inspected facility to sell.
@JustaFewAcresFarm

@@nadiametz1693 thanks for watching our channel! I have been thinking about the best way to explain the butchering process. We butcher under the USDA small farm exemption, which allows us to sell directly to consumers at farmers markets and from the farm.

Congratulations to you and your family for reaching 1k subscribers and thanks for sharing your knowledge. I currently live in Birmingham Al. area but have a inherited farm in southeast Alabama that I am going to retire at soon. I watch channels like yours to get ideas for what I want raise on it. I was wandering if you have any problems with coyotes cause I know they are around the farm. In the city where I live now they are killing cats and small dogs. When I was growing up here we never had problems with them. Just in the last 20 or so years have they started to be around here. Three years ago I went to my Aunts for Thanksgiving My cousin and his wife and I went to the farm and were walking through the woods to look at our planted pines field. As we were walking up the road we turned and saw what we first though was a cat following us. I said that's unusual for a domestic cat to be that deep in the woods. Just then it turned sideways and we could see it was no cat. It hopped away into the woods. Had a face like a cat but the body of an otter. When we got back to my aunts my cousin's wife started looking on internet and found out it was a Jaguarundi. So yea we have those too.

Thank you Choctawatchee Kid! It's a big milestone for us. Surprisingly we don't have any problems with coyotes, even though we can hear them howling at night. We do have problems with owls, hawks, raccoons, weasels, and minks. The owls and hawks are the worst in the summer since there is no way to fence off the chickens in the fields from them. The minks and weasels are the worst in the winter, when they can get into our chickens' winter house and kill up to 30 in one night. Thankfully we haven't had any problems with them this winter. There is one Dexter farm west of us that had problems with coyotes bothering their calves, so they stopped dehorning their cattle so they could protect themselves better. I have never heard of a jaguarundi; had to look that one up. What a weird looking animal!

I did mine In a coop run this year for my own consumption. Mine weighed in at 8-10 lbs at 8 weeks . I just keep wondering why they're so small , I did 12 on 12 off and allowed them to run out of the coop to eat fresh grass . I only did 15 but I had a lot less grass to offer then a lot of these videos I see. Just blows my mind how small ? Figured with my feed sure somewhat bigger but I figured yours would be 6/7/8

Hey Pete, I was wondering how much poultry you typically do in a season? I'm wondering if you fall into the "exempt" category for doing your own processing and what that looks like in NY. More specifically, are you selling whole birds, or are you allowed to sell parts? We're looking to start an operation in VT, and it seems whole birds are all we could sell on exemption. Maybe that's not a bad thing though.

I decided to go for broiler chickens after having loads on chickens like leg bars etc...whose meat is tighter and bones are harder. The farmer I got the broilers from told me they need to be kept in a furnace like shed...or theyll die!?!?!?! The other chickens walk freely in the garden but I'm worried autumn and winter in England might kill them? I got them so I can start breeding them. You cant get broiler eggs in the UK for some reason. But you can get eggs for other chickens.
