Pat Martino is Brilliant. What an honor to be able to have a glimpse into his musical mind. Thank you for sharing this. I've always looked at the Piano as linear. I've seen the guitar as two dimensional, vertical and horizontal.... Now I see that Pat sees the guitar in a 3D space. When we look at the world through only our eyes we limit ourselves. When we explore the vision of others we open up the universe around us to unlimited possibilities. Thank you for being.

~1:33:04 "I think that one thing that is important to share with everyone here, is that I've been doing this for over 50 years. From 1961 to 1979 I thought about it differently and I played differently. In 1980 I had a brain operation and they removed 60% of the left side of my brain [...] when I recovered from that I didn't know how to play any more and I relearned the instrument from 1980 until now [...] one of the side effects of losing that side of my brain is lack of memory. I don't have the ability to memorise like I used to. So now I need to look at some kind of a [lead] sheet to remind me of what we're doing. So there are many things that have changed. Now I thrive on the moment. Before I was very distracted by a lot of memories that had no meaning whatsoever.

~1:31:48 In regard to the question of whether he thinks of every chord when improvising over a progression or whether he thinks more horizontally (and presumably holistically), Pat says "I'm playing all of the chords that are moving, so I am thinking about the chords...there is an initial period in [chord] structures (i.e. progressions)....that the more you play it, the more familiar you become with it, the more familiar you are with it, the less you think about it and it just flows free.

~ 1:44 In response to a question about specific practice ideas, beyond the theory, Pat says that, "the greatest thing is to be free of it as a responsibility and to begin to experience it as a blessing, something that already exists and gives you pleasure; you and you alone".

~1:28 After explaining that, in the case of altered dominants, Pat randomly plays minor 7th m3 subsitutions starting from a m2 away from the root of the altered dominant chord, he says: One side is using what I'm familiar with and the other side is what i don't know and the courage to take a chance, and to improvise without even knowing what's going to happen. You must have both sides now. Both sides must always be in play. That is one of the reasons it is important to turn the mind off.

You are lucky because you don't know Russian. This man's translation was absolutely bad. His attitude was absolutely wrong. Half of the time he tried to figure out what Pat was saying, half the time he made his moronic jokes. He definitely failed to translate deep philosophical ideas. And he even failed to translate the simple theory explanations. It really made me angry. Out of 14 billion people in Moscow, was it too hard for the organizers to hire a qualified (or at least a polite and well mannered) interpreter?!

Pat is killing the translator. you can see it on his face....he doesn't have a clue....I bet he's not even a musician. Pat needs to get rid of the detailed explanations. Simplify! His metaphysical metaphors got to go with a translator. It's got to confuse them.

That has always been my problem with Pat he gets to deep on how he explains music he gets into metaphysical explanations that confuse people instead of sticking with music theory.
