It's good that this came out, because it clears up the blurry line between who is an "employee" of the show & who is a "guest" of the show. Now you can essentially view Aaron Rodgers as another show "employee" & know that the discussions come from that perspective. Pat isn't really viewed as a journalist, so I don't know how important the concept of "impartiality" really is in his space. Now I'm going to assume that every recurring guest is paid, but it makes you wonder if now no one will want to appear without negotiating payment. I guess that's Pat's problem though.

There's actually a reason why journalists typically aren't supposed to pay their sources, subjects and interviewees. It is because it can create a power dynamic that can easily lead to the manipulation of people and stories. For example, imagine if someone really needs the money, how might they be manipulated into saying certain things, that may be inaccurate, but are sensational, for the sake of selling the story? Or how could a news outlet be manipulated by people they want access to, if they have to pay them, and how might the price affect what stories get told and how? It can get tricky. I don't think that actually relates to what Pat and other sports talk programs do, because they are not actually doing true journalistic work most of the time, they are entertainment. But there is actually a rational reason for not paying that's not just corporate greed.
