while i agree he's underrated by joe blow, i also think he's rated pretty highly among us. for him to be rated highly among those who don't already understand his talent level and artistry (joe blow), is to be holding out on the dream that humanity would transcend its primitive, instant gratification, popularity worshiping, superficial, brain washed core. on the flip side, i wish lyle would bust a move on some new tracks and become a traveling, musical evangelist again, either solo or in a group... but that's my own wet dream it seems.

And to do this all so seamlessly ... six musicians playing extraordinarily complex music, filled with multiple polyrhythms and sudden stops and starts popping up out of nowhere - ALL without referring to charts or sheets of written music ....ALL depending on each other to nail their respective parts... I mean I don’t see a single chart anywhere ... it’s nothing less than phenomenal

It is symphonic. So many themes, crazybtime changes. Such long forms. This stuff is really really hard!

Lyle Mays killed it with the piano solo! Nice tune! Loved it!

He was such an amazing keyboard player. As a classically trained pianist who also plays jazz he was one of my favorites ever.

The performance, and that majestic intro by Lyle, warrants a live CD all on its own...

I think of at least 20 Pat Metheny / Lyle Mays songs as my "favorite." But definitely this is one in the top 5. It's beautifully complex and even wistful (the whistling section induces a welcome melancholy). But the totality of it is a bracing energizer, perfect for a mid afternoon pick-me-up.

If it was like that, i don't think which Lyle Mays would stay in this group. It is just that Lyle Mays, him, is a true musician and don't think about the credit like you say. Pat Metheny and him are two wonderfull musicians.

Yes, there's also a "We Live Here" DVD, also called "Live in Japan," but I don't know if "Episode D'Azur" is among the tracks. The album, on the other hand, has many good songs besides this one, like "Here to Stay," or "To the End of the World." It's a hard to find album, but is worth having it. ;)

Yes. There's an interview from a few years ago with Pat being asked if he still talks to Lyle. Pat said they still talk. Though, when those two talk, it tends to be with musical instruments. I'm hoping for a new album in 2012!
