For anyone who's wondering what he's doing playing the neck of a different set of strings than the ones he's plucking, he's doing hammer-on bass notes while plucking the rest of the strings. Also, he's switching tunings during playing. He ain't trynin' to show off... He's playing soul music. He also may be using his hair to play certain notes... so what? This is gorgeous music.

Pat Metheny is an incredible guitarist and composer, I am a guitar maker. I was excited to hear what he would do with 42 strings, and I love the eastern motives he started using around the halfway point, but I think it is legitimate to express frustration that he didn't do more with the tool he was given, especially when considering how skillful Metheny is.

I can't understand why so many people think this sounds terrible. I personally feel the melodies are beautiful, the connection of the two musicians is outstanding, and I think my favorite aspect of this is the obvious jazz elements mixed with the Eastern sound that Pat's guitar puts out. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I completely respect if this doesn't suit you as we all have different tastes in music, but I just had to say, I find this beautiful.

People who think this is just messy guitar-wanking don't know jack shit about music. First, you should know Pat Metheny is a highly respected jazz musician. Secondly, this is an interesting eastern-western music fusion (i'm not going to go in-depth, listen to that stuff yourself if you care to) basically put into a single guitar. It's probably not as hard as it seems to play, but you have to know what the hell you're doing to make music out of it like Pat does.

I fucking love Jazz but this is stupidity at it's finest. It's a great way of saying "Hey it's Jazz, don't diss it" but who cares. Not all Jazz is good jazz, some does suck and this fucking sucks. Don't get me wrong I would've enjoyed this if I were born 200 years ago and had the intellect of a sheep. I'd really like to know what you find so intriguing about this specific piece...?

Just because a musician is talented doesnt mean they cant write shitty music. It seems as if this song was composed with utilizing the entire instrument in mind. Trust me when I say that knowledge of music or the skill of the musician is not a factor in deciding if a piece of music is good or bad. If the masses do not enjoy it, you have to target a very specific demographic of listeners.

Don't get me wrong, it's amazing and all. Great song, I love it. The guitar itself is phenom, a work of art. But I agree with mikubus, in that it's all tuned so he can pluck it with little-to-no worry about his chord coordination because it's all in the picking.

The good stuff always further into the performance. 3:00 it is. :-) Love watching Pat play on this unusual guitar. Looks challenging to play any tune. Had to check it out when I heard the Artist that was ask to design a guitar with as many strings she could put on the instrument. Her name is Linda Manzer, took 6 months to just design it. Fantabulous artist now owner of this gem of an instrument. :-) Enjoyed every note. :-))

No matter what it is he's immensely succesful becasue of the unique artistry. I find some of these comments rather interesting. Actually a little ignorant and insulting.
