Pat has a distinct style all his own. Great stuff to listen to with a cup of coffee at sunrise to start the day.

Anytime of day is fine by me. Incredible album. Pats phrasing is so melodic!

There are people who are so good musically, that they exist above the discussion of what they are wearing. Pat certainly is in that category. When he plays, the only thing that matters is the guitar he is wearing around his neck.

Beautiful music is music beautiful is beautiful ... like Pat 's Music
Two observations: 1) Note at 1:45. That action is a LOT higher than I expected. Perhaps it was related to humidity differences where this was filmed. Regardless, makes me wonder if Metheny modifies his otherwise normally light touch. 2) With all due respect to the many great players Metheny has toured and recorded with, THIS remains in my opinion his best trio.

I agree, I guess Bill and Larry create a musical eviroment that pushes Pat to play and seek for more retrospective jazz language... a bit more reserved and less flashy.

saw metheny twice this summer, in portland and in seattle and I hafta say i was disappointed he didn't wear stripes! it was more of a patterned number but what i can say is it was the same shirt, jeans and shoes at both shows a day apart and between you and me i don't think there was much laundering going on in between. such is life on the road!

2:00 I never realized how awkward his right hand technique is...then again, he is pat metheny. so who cares?
@leonardocarretero10543 жыл бұрын
That's a Brazilian technique used in Sambas and Bossa Novas.
@afonsosousa26842 жыл бұрын
@@leonardocarretero1054 It's not. His technique is just unorthodox and awkward overall.
@leonardocarretero10542 жыл бұрын
@@afonsosousa2684 part of the intro, and at the 2:00 mark, Thumb on bass and 3 fingers plucking at the same time is and or the pinkie finger is Bossa Nova. Not a Pat Metheny technique, Metheny is a trained musician and perfectionist, he's not an unorthodoxed musician. Far from it.
@afonsosousa26842 жыл бұрын
@@leonardocarretero1054 No, plucking with the thumb and fingers is just basic chording (I don't know how else you'd do it) which precedes bossa nova by centuries. The bossa nova comp popularized by Gilberto is specifically a syncopated chordal comp with straight bass hits on 1 and 3. And Pat isn't a trained musician. He is largely self-taught, which might explain his physical approach to the instrument. Being a perfectionist, which he is, has nothing to do with being technically orthodox, which he is absolutely not. His whole technique is completely different from what is considered "proper" technique, from holding the pick with 3 fingers (as opposed to 2) and using its rounded bottom to strike the strings to his bizarre left hand grasp on the neck and the angle at which his fingers hit the fretboard. It's absolutely unorthodox--unorthodox doesn't mean bad: Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt were also highly unorthodox on a technical level.
@leonardocarretero10542 жыл бұрын
@@afonsosousa2684 I see you wikipedia Bossa nova to get your response to me, anyone who knows Bossa Nova will start off by stating Bossa Nova came from Samba, you gave me a whole speal on Bossa Nova. Gilberto 1 and 3 , means you get you info off Wikipedia, when in fact that rhythm style of bossa nova is a slower version of Samba. So much for your knowledge, you claim the style is centuries old, Perhaps that true, different variants like German polka uses the same fingering yet different style of play. As to your comment basic chords, no, because majority of guitar players start Strumming or Picking , not plucking several strings at once, so basic its not. As for unorthodox. metheny is Self taught yes, and was a bit unorthodoxed in his earier years with Jaco, but as a trained musician and PERFECTIONIST, that Metheny has become. He does not allow himself to be unhinged, thats why many state his music is not Jazz but World.
