I started making one from a set of old stout reins, I noticed the crown piece is wider so you can make the angled slot.. took me five times, yes sir.. to twist those suckers... am using lots of neats foot oil.. still lumpy at the tie off of the cheeks to crown.. suppling it further by pulling leather around strut of chair back.. I like the design very much. Thank you,

You have tenacity! Just as an FYI, Pat makes his hangers with regular weight split reins. The crownpiece is made from a 1 1/4 inch latigo (I believe 12 inches in length), preferably without holes, although there’s nothing wrong with using your old latigos for this purpose in which case, it doesn’t matter if it has holes or not.

@@PatnDebPuckett haha, thanks so much, yes, regular weight would have been better to lessen the chunkiness at the cheek/crown junction. I made the reins and they are too thick. 12 inch crown sounds about right and mine's a shade long hence knot could interfere with horse's vision..plus, the anatomy of the skull can house that knot, if in the right spot, rather nicely.. Have another set of split reins so will have another bash. Love making things and so like tack that is metal free.

As soon as we get a horse that we’re riding in a bosal, we will do one. Keep an eye on updates on Pat’s colt, Chinaco, It will be a long time from now but we will be documenting his journey from the bosal to the bridle.

Hmm.. the one inch, or less, drop, and the muscle then the jaw bone, so very interesting. Why is the throat latch knot called a blood knot? Here, in Southern Spain, sadly the bosal morphed into a serrated iron, tight fitting, nose band, called la serreta, from verb, as you know, serrar, to saw (off) a horrific piece of commonly used equipment available in most hard wear shops and saddlers.. Most second hand horses bear the multiple scars low down on their noses from being "broke" to the serreta. Potros are started on the lunge with this piece of equipment.. Like the great horseman of the pampas, Bontine Cunninghame Graham once commented, back around 1900, it certainly makes a handy horse. Sadly, today, I see no one with the hands educated sufficiently to use it. It's used in conjunction with a high port, long (4/5 inch) shank, iron bit, with curb chain, so the effect is one of collection, but the tack creates a braced horse, braced against the pain of being trapped within the metalwork, the riders seem to never open their hands but consider horsemanship a battle of mechanical force, holding their horses in a vice, permanently. Foaming, pinched corners of mouths, roll eyed, is how the mongrel machos ride.. Hence, I have spent some decades undoing what man had done to some of these super animals..never use bribery, just horsemanship. Enjoying learning more from you, I am now in my 64th summer, so bit of an old mare but still able to climb onboard anything with hair on it. Saludos, to Deb and yourself. R

Rachel, when I moved to Spain 7 years ago I was appalled by this barbaric serrata. I am currently trying to ride a 6 year old mare who was started with the whole gear and she gaps her mouth open and is worried all the time. I started out just using a halter and am now trying the bosal. It truly is sad. I don't know if this little mare will ever be right after being subjected to these "mongrel machos riders." Pat I am loving every video. I have watched some over and over. Thank you

suzanneyorkville hello, thank you for interesting reply. I suggest watching some of the wonderful Masterson method massage and release videos here on the tube. He is another wonderful horseman and the massage techniques I learned have helped many horses release their bodies after the Spanish start off. Really helps! All the best! Rachel

I like that headstall. Seems like you could also use it on a regular bridle. I sure like the throatlatch knot.
