Because it is a team game. If Mike didn't care about winning and played like James Hardin, his stats would have been much more impressive. He would have been a WORSE player though. If they line up the greats and choose up sides there are a lot of players in front of wilt. just at center I'll take Kareen, the Dream or Russel ahead of Wilt.

It’s not even close. A 6 team, local sport instead of the global game it is today, that’s like saying when you joined the rec league of 40 people and won 5 times is better than later when the rec league expanded to 1,000,000 pool of talent and won 3 times. The salary back then was so low that many players even had to take second jobs, hence the whole milkman and plumber comment, whereas today, it’s a multi billion dollar industry with talent from all over the globe training their entire lives. This is common sense. Even three year olds understand this concept. I don’t know why so many people just mentally fumble and stumble over understanding this simple, simple point.

@@joemarshall4226 That's not entirely accurate. Along with a plethora of other records, Wilt also led the league in Assists! In fact, among Centers, he still holds the record. And he retired 50 Years Ago! Wilt's true problem was he was so good they would build a team around him, but never a true quality team. And Basketball is a Team sport. Yes, he had some really good players at times, but nothing consistent like Bill Russell had with the Celtics. Also, when I list Wilt as the GOAT, I mean as a Singular Individual Player. Pat Riley in a weak moment once said: "If I needed one player to make a shot to win an NBA championship, I'd take Michael Jordan. But if I needed one player to make a shot to save my life, I'd take Larry Bird. There are a lot of great players on this list and comparisons are difficult because of that. There are a few sports in which the greatest actually can be identified no matter what criteria are used. Hockey: Wayne Gretzky, Golf: Jack Nicklaus, and maybe a few others. But basketball is a tough call. There are also a few sports where the so-called "GOAT" shouldn't even be in the conversation. Boxing? Mohammed Ali is not only the GOAT, he wasn't even the best black boxer. That one would go to Sugar Ray Robinson (not Leonard). What I like about Bird, Kareem, Magic, Jordan and many of the others mentioned in basketball is that they were great SPORTS. Ali was a crybaby who made being a lousy sport OK, and who "converted" to Islam to avoid Vietnam. But if I have to make a choice about basketball players, I think I'd take Bird.

Another issue is that there were players who were super great for short stints, how do they play into the mix? If we're looking at players just at their peaks, then you have some who had one or two seasons of insane greatness but not longevity. For example, Moses Malone in the 1983 playoffs was simply one of the best postmen ever, but he didn't maintain that same level for long. Mark Price had a season where he shot like 48% from the 3-point line! And that was when there wasn't an offense built around that shot; many of those shots were like falling out of bounds or shot-clock pressure shots, it was insane. Anyhow, a lot of players like that, that had short stints of insanity but if were are looking at just peak performances, would be possibly considered among the greatest.

Wilt, Jordan, jabbar, magic, bird, curry........all saved the game and changed the game. Lebron and espn ruined it. I could list 100 other players I'd rather have on a team than James. Russell was a great player in the right place at the right time, not taking anything away from him. For Wilt, they had to change the rules to make the game more difficult for him. Bird n Magic saved the nba in the early 80s. Just in time for MJ, who they had to change the rules for in order for teams not to kill him. Sorry Shaq, that's why ur not here. The original hack-a-shaq was strike-a-mike. Kobe n Duncan were great, and so is lebron, just not in that teir of Greatest. Then shined Steph Curry, who changed the game completely, pistol Pete style. Only to have everybody think they are Steph Curry, jacking up threes, destroying what's left of what Wilt, Magic, Bird and MJ built up and espn and lebron "so-so average" James have torn down the last 15 years.

If you take in to consideration the player's entire basketball career including HS, College and Pro, Kareem is by far the best player ever. It's not even close! In High School: Lew Alcindor led the Jack Donohue-coached Power Memorial Academy team to three consecutive New York City Catholic championships, a 71-game winning streak, and an overall record of 79-2. In Lew’s tenth and eleventh grades, the Power Memorial Academy basketball team won the national high school boys’ basketball championships. He averaged 30 points and 20 rebounds as a senior, shooting 75 percent from the field, while playing just half the game, or roughly 16 minutes, as a rule. Power Memorial once won 71 games in a row with Alcindor. In College: UCLA went 88-2 in the three seasons that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played with the Bruins. UCLA went undefeated in 1967, going 30-0 and winning the national championship, then 29-1 in each of the next two seasons winning the championship in both of those seasons as well. He would have made it 4 championships in 4 seasons had they not had the ridiculous rule that Freshman could not play on the varsity team. (Who were the geniuses that made that decision?) UCLA's first loss with Abdul-Jabbar didn't come until his 44th game with the Bruins, when they fell by two points to No. 2 Houston while playing with one eye. They later crushed the Cougars in the NCAA tournament to avenge their loss. And we all know what he did in the Pros. Case Closed!

COULD Magic actually play all 5 positions? He was a point guard, and he played one very memorable and outstanding game at center, and he was a reasonably serviceable point-forward when was over the hill. But he didn't bang inside for rebounds like a real 1980's forward. He wasn't knocking down shot after shot from the outside like a 2-guard. When LeBron "plays all five positions," he actually does. He gets down low in order to guard point guards when necessary, he brings the ball up like a guard, he can hit 7 straight outside shots like a wing, he can pull up for 3 like a shooting guard, he can drive to the basket with tons of power like a 4 would, and he's strong enough to outmuscle 2/3 of the centers in the league today, especially when many are shooting outside jumpers for most of the game. Magic was theoretically capable of playing all 5 positions, because of his determination and height, etc., but he was basically a one-position player that happened to have certain unique qualities that no one else at that position has had. Also, if you look at Magic's vs. Bird's numbers, Larry pretty much dominated until he got hurt in 1989. Magic won 4 rings to Bird's 3 in that time period because the Lakers had Kareem in his amazing extended prime, and no other team did.

OK... I hardy have Riley's gravitas, but I am 86 years old and I actually SAW everybody from Mikan to Lebron. To my eyes, the BEST is Wilt, with Kareem second, but close. If you just go by the number of titles, Russell is the best athlete in any sport, at any time...and it ain't close! Pretty good coach, too, something none of those other guys can claim.

In the goat debate should both Kareem and Magic get credit for the titles they share? Also, Bird only had 3, but the entirety of his career while healthy he had to compete against 2 goat candidates playing together on one team.

There's no such thing as a GOAT in NBA history. No such thing. But there were three players in history who made their teams better, more so than any other players. Those three players, in no particular order, were Russell, Bird, and Magic. Those are at the top. Ultimate team players who raised everyone else's game.

@@garygoodin1426 People overlook the fact that the LAKERS went to the finals 4years in a row:1981/82-1984/85. Slight transition when NN gets traded to SAN DIEGO after the 82/83 season to get SCOTT in the draft giving total reign to MAGIC running the point. Injuries unfortunatly plays a part in sports.

if you didnt get to watch the guy then hes not that good. If the guy has a 40 something inch vertical in the 60s or 70s, it was different. In the 60s and 70s the goal was not 10 ft like it is today. It was ten feet high that different from 10 ft high. These guy average 30, 40 even 50 points a game. In the 60s and 70s their was only about 121 possession per game, not like today when the only 91. So the guys who go up and down the court few times and take more break are in better shape and need load management. MJ average 38 minutes per game, the far better than Wilts sorry ass who could only manage Ameer 45.8 minutes per game which is the highest in NBA history. Can we just image if Wilt could have just gotten in shape maybe would have had the sit out those 2.2 mpg.
