In the early 1970s, long before Wheel of Fortune, Pat Sajak worked in Nashville at WSM-AM-FM-TV. His main duties were to be the TV station's weekend weatherman and booth announcer. But Pat had quite a bit of experience doing radio, in Chicago and on the American Forces Vietnam Network, plus he loved doing it. WSM-AM just happened to have a two hour shift open in the afternoons, and Pat was perfect for it.
Thus Pat Sajak, along with his trusty newsman, Al Voecks, entertained the good folks in Nashville on their drive home in 1974 and 1975. During this time, it should be noted that WSM-AM was a full service station, programming pop music and talk shows during the day, and playing country music at night, along with the world famous Grand Ole Opry on the weekends, of course.
The Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame is proud to share this aircheck from the collection of Mike Bohan. There will be many more to come.

I can't say I ever knew WSM was anything, but a country station, but I am hearing mostly adult contemporary music of the era.

Up until about 1979 or so, WSM played adult-contemporary music during the day and went to country at night. After that, they'd gone country full time.

The music you hear from that time was called “Middle-Of-The-Road” music. WSM went full time country in 1979, with country being the format only at night time prior to the 1979 change.

Gary Kerns, we played CW McCall's Convoy both during the daytime pop hours, and at nights during the country hours. It was a rare crossover as far as WSM was concerned. About 0:16 and 4:50 he mentions the jocks who filled in for him while he was on Thanksgiving vacation. "Michael O'Shea" was me. I was 18. His sidekick was newsman Al Voecks, who was also the PD.

Funny, "yes you can listen to Monday night football without Howard Cosell". Also the quip about John Denver and Olivia Newton John being chaperoned by Denver's wife Annie at the recording studio. Pat was real good with witty one liners. Al Voecks, another Nashville legend, was great paired with Pat. Crazy hearing these old ads, forgot about Zayres. Thanks to Mike Bohan for sharing.

7:00 Zayre! That was a chain of stores based in Boston. I never knew they had stores outside of New England. The stores are gone but the corporation exists now called TJX. TJ Max and BJs Wholesale and others .

At that time, an 18-year-old girl named Vanna White had just moved to Atlanta after she had graduated from high school that same year. She was working as a model there before she headed to Hollywood five years later. And the rest they say is TV history.

A humorous aircheck, to say the least. At 6:15, the jingle said "W65SM". I forget now where it is, but Sajak told the guy doing the show with him that he (Sajak's partner) behaved himself by leaving the liquor at home. At 6:34, he played "Convoy". WSM undoubtedly played that at night when they did country. At 8:15, it showed a Cadillac (hybrid?) that doubled as a pickup truck a la Chevy El Camino or Ford Ranchero. At 8:45, he played Andrew Gold. I'd never heard Andrew Gold until summer '77's "Lonely Boy". Finally, at 11:44, Sajak mentioned that the late Mayer Daley of Chicago could make it stop snowing simply by telling it to.

Fun Fact: Until Summer 1999, Wheel of Fortune was on WUXP-TV in Nashville. Is it strange to you that Wheel was on a UPN station in the late 90s?
@nashvilletv
@nashvilletv Жыл бұрын
When the syndicated version of Wheel first aired in Nashville, it was on WSMV-Channel 4. At that time, NBC still carried the daytime version, so Channel 4 aired Wheel twice on weekdays for several years.

WSM has never been a Top 40 station!!

Doug, we'll I think you're highly confused. First, 650 WSM was "NEVER" a so called "Top 40" radio station in the 70s during the daytime, however, I don't think you understand what the format "Adult Contemporary" is. That was what 650 WSM was during the daytime in the 70s. Ted Johnson was the Program Director of 650 WSM then. Adult Contemporary pulls songs of the Top 40 or today known as the "Contemporary Hit Radio" (CHR) format that appeals to a older audience of ages 35-54. Adult Contemporary has changed since the 1970s and it has a sister spin off format today call "Hot Adult Contemporary" that is to me real close to Top 40. Today in the 2020s, Top-40 is refered to as CHR. There is no hard rock played in today's "CHR" (Top 40-Pop) format. Today in the 2020s, rock music has died with hip-hop/rap taking it's place. Going back to what 650 WSM was doing in the 70s with it's daytime adult contemporary format was to pull songs that were not too hard rock or bubble gum, teen hits either. Hip-hop/rap had not come along yet. In the Adult Contemporary format, songs were tested to gear to the 35-54 audience, (or a general audience) not teens and younger adults. That's what 650 WSM played during this time period. I think that is where you're confused. In 1979, "Hip-hop/Rap" came on the scene in the Top 40 (CHR) format. Around 1979, WSM made the move to drop Adult Contemporary during the daytime and go full time Country, which it is today. Today, Mix 92.9 in Nashville (WJXA-FM) is the "Adult Contemporary" Station. Let me add a side bar Doug, in 1975 there is a Playlist of Adult Contemporary songs and artists played during the daytime on WSM. You would hear The Four Seasons, Dan Fogelberg, Fleetwood Mac, John Denver, Helen Ready, Gordon Lightfoot, some Jefferson Starship just to name a few. There is a 650 WSM music survey sheet sample from 1975 here in online. I even remember 650 WSM playing Elton John hits during the daytime.
