Glad I’m not the only one thinking this! I’m 19 myself (19 and a half next month) and I remember as a young kid at Grandma’s house sitting around after Wednesday night dinner (and yes, we would go over there after school pretty much EVERY Wednesday!) watching Wheel and playing along, and sometimes we’d go after and turn Jeopardy! on at home too. Now both hosts are gone (one retired of course) as is the great grandmother who lived at Grandma’s house for a while…and I don’t know what to think of that! But as someone who can remember the details of some days or periods of life particularly vividly…I can always relive these moments again and again anyways, and as they say those who are gone are never truly gone. 🙂 I do however often think that I really grew up in the best era of television, these days nothing is really good from the movies to the TV shows as it all used to be!

Yeah, see, I’m 19 (almost 19 and a half) and I myself remember watching Wheel on Wednesday nights as a young kid with my family including my great grandmother who passed in early 2021. It’s one of those things where it’s a bit less of this one special thing to me but just a cool detail of that part of my life! But it’s still yet why I’m so horribly sad Pat retired, because that man was a staple of the show and hence a connection to those Wednesday nights years ago. TV has changed so much though, a lot less great shows these days, so really I think it’s just another hallmark of the end of an era. We both truly were lucky to live in an era of great television I think!

As we take this time, once again, to say goodbye to Pat Sajak, in this show’s entirety, there is a rhyme by Clarence Day which says what I want to say, in which Charles Kuralt once said, as he stepped down from CBS News/Sunday Morning: 'Farewell, my friends, farewell and hail; I'm off to seek the holy grail; I cannot tell you why; remember, please when I am gone, 'twas aspiration led me on; tiddly-widdly-toodle-oo, all I want is to stay with you, but here I go, goodbye.' Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! were my comfort shows as a child having to deal with evil teachers and overloads of schoolwork. It was an hour where you could escape from the harsh realities and societal pressures of post-second grade elementary school. Always looked forward to being able to escape to the world that Pat and Alex had for us at 7pm every night. Even though I was always more into Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune's simple gameplay always felt more comforting. Sure the puzzles might've been somewhat difficult (especially the bonus round), but at least it wasn't as advanced and complex as some of the "answers" Jeopardy! expected it's contestants to respond to right away. Thank you for everything, Mr. Sajak! Enjoy retirement! Sincerely someone you will probably never meet.

There weren't any major scandals - and it was family-friendly even behind the scenes. There is an account here from Columbus, Ohio that was my first time seeing Pat and Vanna when they did a special week of shows at the Ohio State Fair before the syndicated version began in 1983. As a new third-grader, it was nice to see my favorite show at night! I had missed the transition in first and second grade lol.

It’s like the end of my childhood. I lost part of it when Alex Trebek passed away. I remember, as a kid, watching Wheel and Jeopardy, with my brother and my grandfather from about the age of 6 until about age 12, every night, without fail… the three of us would make a cake, eat some ice cream and watch wheel and jeopardy then after that we’d watch a movie. Those were my summers every night, without fail and some school nights too.. I think back on that now as a distant memory but a cherished memory that I’ll hold for the rest of my life. My grandfather passed away in 2016 and my brother passed away in 2022.. now I think back on those nights, those trips to the store with my grandpa and brother to get donuts, cake and ice cream.. it’s weird knowing you’re the last one left to have been a part of something… it’s just me now that knows about those nights, that fun, all that sugar consumption… what I wouldn’t give for one of those nights with grandpa and my brother… when things were simpler.😢 Once my kids got a little older I had hoped to pass the tradition onto them but sadly my daughter wants nothing to do with it and my son is autistic and definitely wants nothing to do with it…. So I guess it’ll always be something that my grandpa, brother and I did during the summers when we were kids..

Specialist Patrick Sajdak served in South Vietnam for fourteen months, starting in 1968-1969. He was a disc jockey with Armed Forces Radio. He says he felt guilty about having a relatively soft assignment, but felt the gratitude of those coming off the line. They said Sajdak's radio show made their lives in the field a bit better.

Thank you, Pat.....for setting your politics aside, for being such a character, for being such a household staple for the past 40+ years, letting yourself be a staple of American television long enough to be a core part of my childhood. Your legacy is cemented with the likes of Trebek, Barker, and so many others 🤟
