1. Hydrophilic down doesn't exist 2. Hydrophobic down is just down sprayed with dwr chemicals. It wears out and needs to be reapplied. It can be done DIY with nikwax products.

had my sleeve under running water in the kitchen sink and the water beaded off for 2 and a half minutes. I doubt your gonna be pouring your glass of water on you for that long ;) just sayin the waterproof properties are epic on the treated nylon shell of the down sweater. only issue i had was the pockets never kept my hands warm in dry conditions

I think you mean hydrophobic.
@runningoffinstinct4 жыл бұрын
This is a bit misleading. Read into some of the disadvantages of using hydrophobic down. It strips the down of its natural oils which are beneficial. You shouldn't be thinking about getting your down wet ever, you should be thinking about ways to protect it. Other high quality outdoor equipment manufacturers who specialize in down products like Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends specifically choose to NOT use hydrophobic down as they feel the negatives outweigh the positives. If there is any chance of your down getting wet, bring a shell or use synthetics for that mission.

There’s always a chance your down may get wet, that’s why they developed primloft etc and hydrophobic down

Sweat bro . My ghost whisperer is awful around pit areas because of sweat. And I am using down jacket for static activities

Super video! :) One question. Is there enough space in the hood to wear a climbig helmet? Thanks a lot :)
@ascentionism4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for asking, that's a great question. I would say it 90% fits - you can wear a climbing helmet under the hood and zip the jacket up to your chest, but if you want to zip it all the way up, it gets pretty snug

I'm thinking about grabbing this jacket. I'm a bit shorter than you and can't decide if I would need an M or L... If possible could you maybe tell me about what your chest measurement is?
@ascentionism4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan! My chest measurement is 40-41 inches. Patagonia says the large is best for 42-44 inch chests, but I like having a bit of extra room for layering and mobility

If the down sweater gets wet, will it forever be non insulating or is that just until it dries and then reverts back to normal?
@ascentionism4 жыл бұрын
It reverts back to normal once it dries!

Also there are washes made specifically for down that re-establish the down jackets water repellent properties during a wash. Funny that getting it wet can protect it from moisture. (nikwax, grangers, etc.)

If you can't get the L3, this is still a great option! A couple of the other comments have talked about the downsides of hydrophobic down as well, so maybe the L3 isn't as great as I built it up to be

@@ascentionism I got an 800 Patagonia which I also think is over rated. I picked up a 32degree branded 650 equivalent from marshalls for 25usd and I feel like it's just as warm as the 229 dollar Patagonia jacket/sweater 😂😭🤷
