This hike happened before I had my KZbin channel, so please excuse the quality :-) My videos and photos don't do justice to the beauty of the place.
The Patagonia W-Circuit is located in Torres del Paine, a national park in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region of Chile. It offers majestic views of the Glacier Grey, the Patagonian icefields, the Torres (towers), Cuernos (horns), the Andes mountains, Lago Skottsberg, Lago Nordensjöld, and Lago Pehoe among others. Lago Pehoe is in the list of twenty most beautiful lakes in the world by Huffington Post. Lago Nordensjöld is considered the jewel of the W Circuit due to its crystal blue color and it being visible on most part of the hike.
We flew to Punta Arenas (the nearest airport) two days before the start of our trek, took a bus to Puerto Natales (the closest town to Torres del Paine) and did some exploring in Argentina (stay tuned) before the trek
The four-day trek:
Day One:
- We took an early bus from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine. Bus ride is around two hours and stops at the park entrance (Laguna Amarga) for permit check, then move on to Pudeto Ferry terminal.
- We then took a 40-minute ferry ride to Paine Grande where the W-Circuit (west to East) hike starts.
-Hiked up to Refugio / Campamento Grey (11km), checked-in to the office and set-up our tent.
- Then hiked up to Glacier Grey (1km from campsite) and the two suspension bridges (2.5 km farther).
- Hiked back to Refugio / Campamento Grey for the night.
I highly recommend going as far as the second suspension bridge... the views of the Patagonian icefields are stunning! Our total hiking distance was 18km.
Day Two:
- Hiked back to Paine Grande (11km)
- At the junction, hiked towards east to Campamento Italiano (7.6 km), checked-in to the office, and set-up our tent.
- Hiked to the French Valley (5.5 km from campsite) and to the Britanico Viewpoint (2 km farther).
- Hiked back to Campamento Italiano.
Our total hiking distance was 33.6 km.
Day Three and Day Four are detailed in Part 2 of this video:
• Patagonia W-Circuit | ...
The trail is very well marked and straight-forward, nothing technical. One thing that I would advise to be prepared is for the ever-changing weather in the area. During our hike, we had everything... sun, rain, hail, snow and strong gusts of wind.
