I was intrigued when you said at 7:27 that Rolitoland was mostly lost media. I'm part of flashpoint archive, a flash games/animations archival community. I scoured through the internet archive and found some of the animations you mentioned as lost. I've compiled everything I could find here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3KyhXSmhr2daJY

I've always loved their use of the self fulfilling prophecy motif with zigotons. Their prophecy says patapons will cause destruction when they reach earthend, and so they try to stop them, which causes patapons to cause the destruction. Had they not tried to stop them, patapons wouldn't cause any destruction to zigotons. I think that's quite neat :>

They still would have likely opened the vessel, but at least the Zigotons wouldn't have been wiped out prematurely.

I find it pretty humorous that the first half of all the patapon unit names are just taken from japanese. Hata - flag/banner, Yari - spear, Tate - shield, Yumi - bow, Deka(i) - huge, kiba - cavalry, (mega is a pun on megaphone) Robo - robot (obviously), Tori - bird, Maho - magic

Thank god for emulation. I've been playing single player for the entire Patapon 3 back then bc I didn't know how multiplayer works (I was 11). Then after replaying 2 and 3 on emulator revived my love for the franchise. I was surprised that there's still an active community, and I have made great memories playing multi w peeps in discord. God bless that Depths of Infinity mod, it actually gave me incentive to continue on the dlc quests, and I've beaten some of em w/ just me and a friend. It was the most fun I ever had during the pandemic. Oh ye I've watched this entire thing in one sitting. I'm just glad that this game is not forgotten even after a decade of its release.

This was such a great video to watch! I hold all 3 Patapon games very dear to my heart and I've met so many good friends through it from its online multiplier and from my short time on deviantart. I still own all 3 of my copies of the games, the same ones I bought when I was younger. Patapon is one of my favorite games of all time, sad to see we'll most likely never get a 4th game. You also forgot a Patapon easter egg in Playstation All-Stars. When using Big Daddy's level 3 attack on the God of War Stage, he will cause the whole stage to become underwater. If the Patapons are out when this happens, Gekoronpa rarepons (The Frog ones) can be seen swimming in the background until Big Daddy's level 3 ends. Thanks for making such a great video! We need more Patapon!

Patapon and its sequels are some of those extremely immersive rhythm games. Even on the small PSP screen I was so enveloped in what my little army was doing, panicking when they were attacked, celebrating their victories, getting hype when they were charging up. The music truly made the action of that game perfect. One of the few games where the art direction, gameplay, audio, and everything else really blended together in one, clearly-defined and memorable experience. And I still put the music on and drum out the beats as they sing.

Out of the three, I’d say patapon 1 was my favourite. Out of all of them, it really gave the feeling of being an underdog tribe going against the odds, mostly because you don’t have an OP hero with you. Also, I enjoyed the technology of the zigs being more grounded compared to the karmen, with the fantastical elements being more limited and only appearing towards the end really made the escalation in conflict feel real, and the desperation of the zigoton more tragic

God, isn't this a blast from the past. I remember when I first got into Patapon back in middle school because my best friend at the time was obsessed with it and would never stop talking about it. He eventually got me to get the series and I was hooked for years; even had my username for most sites referencing my main, Cannogabang. We were always playing 3 together with others through a now-dead chatroom called Pataponzoo. Even participated in challenge runs like Gheek Dongora with 4 Oohoroc's or Craggy Monsters with 4 Destrobo's. Good times.

I just found this video and felt super happy seeing so many people liked these games too. I had played all 3 of these games. Patapon 2 was my favorite one, the minigames, the levels, the new rarepons, the added classes and the heropon masks was super cool and I remember building a powerful army with divine/demon weapons to take on the harder versions of the bosses. I did like the cooler looking Uberhero’s and them having different cries of battle when you activate the hero mode in 3 but I really wish they kept having an army of patapon as yeah, the 3 patapon were pretty weak and I had to rely on my Uberhero alone and when they went down it was basically over. Eventually I powered my default Yaripon enough to to throw three spears and strike lightning to hit crits to just hit max damage and kill most these things in a couple hero mode throws. It was satisfying but took a LONG time compared to patapon 2.

Thanks for watching! It's a shame, because P3 does everything better from a visual/audio/game "feel" perspective, it just falls flat on the difficulty. If the game respected the players time, I think a lot of us would be singing a different story.

One thing I noticed between watching clips of 1+2 and 3 was the unbelievable amount of power creep. You were lucky to deal a few hundred damage per hit in the first two games, even with the best equipment. By the post-game of 3, you could deal damage in the mid SIX digits, and high-level bosses could be taken out in seconds once you get Fever mode.

The scale is ridiculous and makes replaying earlier content almost pointless, at least in P2 it would eventually catch up with you since stages level up after each clear (and thus become harder)...

Patapon will always be my #1 game ever. I found the game by complete accident as a young kid. My step brother had found a PSP while on a construction site but it was to badly damaged and didnt work. it still had a game inside and he knew I had a PSP myself. So next time i visited him he gave me the game. That game being Patapon. I never heard of it and it didnt really look that interesting but i gave it a shot. The music was the first thing that got me hooked. I would play dancing to the beats as I played in my room with headphones and sing along to keep rhythm. It became the only game i really played on my PSP, and then i found out it had 2 other games and i went straight to GameStop to pick them. I still listen to the soundtrack when i workout since it always fills me up with motivation and good memories

Patapon was probably one of the most pivotal games when it came to my formative years. I had initially picked it up and was instantly hooked from when I was merely 6 or 7. Fast forward to the age of 17 and I found myself finally able to replay the 2nd and 3rd Patapon games through a pc emulator, and in doing so helped create a more “mature” perspective of the game that I developed alongside the nostalgia I had for the series. I look forward to its spiritual successor and what it has in store. Heck, I may try and find an emulator of the first game, replay the whole trilogy, then play project jabberwocky to really get the most out of this beloved rhythm series.

I’ve Thanked the Former Sony CEO Shawn Layden for making games like Patapon to be on the spotlight. Even Replied me with a Patapon Gif. And Would it be awesome in an Alternate Universe that Patapon 4 might happen with a Mario Maker with a bang? Maybe Before Shutting down Japan Studio? That will be Great? But truth was it didn’t happen and it’s reality still 😞 So Thank you! And to Kotani-San, Rolito-San! Sony and their Producers for this Great Series to love and enjoy 😊

Loco Rocco and Patapon were by far my favourite PSP games, even more than Monster Hunter. I would love if Patapon and Loco Rocco got new games or some skin of spiritual successor. Light hearted, funky music and lovely art all around. Also, Elite Beat Agent, that would be great.

Patapon was a big part of my early gaming years. After watching the Ratatan trailer, your video was suggested to me; and boy what a wonderful trip of nostalgia this was. I think why your video touched me because it came from a place of love, as you laid out the sentiments of a true fan perfectly. Great job! And can't wait for Ratatan!

if it was mentioned in the video i didnt hear it but, fun fact the name of yaripon, tatepon and yumipon are the names of the weapons they use but in japanese, so yumi means bow, yami means spear and tate means shield and then they put pon in front bcs they are patapons and this applies to the rest of the patapons class for example toripon, tori is bird and so on Great video man i love patapon and i grew with this game so it has been an important part of my childhood and one of the main reason i love music so much, thank you for take time and making this great content 🤎

To be honest i only really like and play constantly Patapon 2. It hit the perfect balance between the two to the point of being one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences i ever seen alongside Locoroco 2 (made by same developers btw, more devs should take note from both imo). Patapon 1 is a good first try experiment but it can be a bit clunky and unnecesarily frustrating at times and 3 is so unbalanced and too much strange decisions that i think is one of my most hated games, as unpopular it can sound. I respect personal opinions though, and i really liked the retrospective. 1 hour well spend 👍 Would you talk about Patafour?
@mchaosg
@mchaosg 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, they're not the same developers; Japan Studio only produced Patapon, it was developed by Pyramid. I don't know too much about Patafour other than the devs. I did just recently find out Kotani-san is a Patreon backer, so that's neat!

You're right by saying Patapon's first game is the hardest in the trilogy, I spent a whole year trying to get the rain miracle done properly; making new savefiles to replay the first parts of the game when I felt frustrated, grinding on Dodonga and Majindonga until they were too OP for my army and then repeat. I did so because my father told me he would not bought the sequels until I complete the first one, so I tried my best for a whole year and I did it. I remember being so happy when I got the "X-XX-XX" right, and I then kept playing being excited about finally seeing the Kibapons and Dekapons and being able to use them in my army. I still remember when I got Patapon 2, I got a second hand UMD with the manual and without the box, but I was really happy when my mother showed it to me... I still remember her saying she would burn the UMD if I don't keep my good grades, because I wasn't totally used to being in school (I was in 4th grade and I am autistic). These games really had an impact on me, they inspired me to create stories and worldbuilding, I remember how much time I spent creating my own classes, stories, and rarepons... I always wanted to see an OP Dekapon and Kibapon like Ton, Chin and Kan- Anyways, this was my silly comment, thanks for your long and cool video covering the Patapon series, as someone who was REALLY into it when I was younger, I appreciate it a lot, and I did not know some information

I remember playing Patapon 3 with my cousin and his neighbor's son when it came out. I enjoyed every moment of it. But right around the same time, I got transfered to a school with very strict rules and far away from my home. I couldn't bring my PSP with me, and ended up never finish the game, and never played the game again with my cousin and his neighbor's son. I really wish I can go back in time to play it with them again. Being a kid with nothing to worry, wanting to visit your cousin to play games with him. The experience is so unique, to me no game can replicate it. Patapon 3 will always has a special place in my heart.

The amount of info here is insane!! My god you were truly a patapon fan back in the good ol days. As a kid i discovered patapon because the demo for patapon 2 was used to run homebrew which i didn't really get at the time but my aunt told me to do that to run the other games. When i got older i did my fare share of patapon investigation and here i am. As for patapon 3 I really don't know how the multiplayer thing works so i scuffed it out as a "dead feature" I've solo cleared every single multiplayer dungeon in it even the one below the final boss. (Used a tondenga with 999999-999999 dmg) i think a lot of stronger content were locked in multiplayer which was unfortunate... Lastly thanks for the Project JabberWocky heads up

I loved this video. I think the main reason why Patapon 2 is better than 1 is, that the bosses don't synchronise themselves to your song, so it's possible to become misaligned, and thus not have the ability to defend.
@mchaosg

It definitely helps, some bosses can still fall out of sync (Cioking) but I would just add that to the list of polish added with P2.

@@fallbranch If it was good designed with autosave and not punish the player with excessive grinding after losing a single unit then i would agree but it isnt the case. Besides, if a game doesnt have ANY quality of life stuff then it would make the experience of a player worst without any reason, making the game feeling outdated. Unless you are one of those hardcore players that dont care about unfair difficult or time wasted doing something that should take much less.
