Outstanding. Great review and history lesson, well done.

Peter Martin Hi Peter, thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed this showcase, and I'll try to include the context and background of each watch in its respective video. Best, Tim

+Arthur J Yeah, my bad. Some of these older reviews were a bit of a learning process for me as well. I knew the watches with some authority, but filming, presentation,and process required some work. Heck, I'm still working to improve the videos, and there's a new SLR, gloves (finally!), and improved lighting in the pipeline for next week. Best, Tim

Does the caliber 215 PS in the 5196 have the Geneva seal? On Patek's website, the picture of their 215 PS movement has the PP seal.
@closer717 ай бұрын
Yes. If it was made before PP stopped stamping movements with the Geneva Seal and created their own seal to signify a superior level of finish to that mandated by the Geneva Seal.

Just bought a 1959 2573 I'm psyched should arrive in 2 or 3 days. I'll def put up a short vid. It has a gold bracelet the owner had especially made for it.

@@dentystastatysta5692 The finish is actually superior to ALS. Big time. Just not on display. Everyone who knows watches knows the German movements are nice looking...just not finished to the level of a PP, what with their German silver (i.e. TIN) materials and all...Ha! Ha! Ha!

I’m taken aback at the close resemblance between this Patek and my stainless steel Jaeger LeCoultre Master Control Date (#1548420). Given the quality of the Caliber 899-1 movement inside the JLC, I find the premium required to get the “Patek” name put on the dial impossible to justify. In fact, I once owned the PP 5196-G but, on seeing the minuscule movement inside the case of the Patek, promptly returned it to my jeweler for an A. Lange & Söhne “Richard Lange”.

I wish the 5196G had a white dial like the yellow and rose gold versions. I hate that grey dial :(

+Thomas Williams Have you seen the 5196P? It's completely unique within the 5196 family and has a look that's all its own. Granted, it's also grey, but the Arabic numerals and feuille hands relieve the sterility of the batons and dauphines, respectively. www.patek.com/en/mens-watches/calatrava/5196P-001 Best, Tim

watchuwantinc What is your opinion of the grey dial? Does it look better in the flesh?
@the1916company9 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, I enjoy the grey dial more than the silver, but that may be a matter of personal preference. My ideal color scheme for a watch involves a white/grey case metal with a black or blue dial, so I'm conditioned to look more favorably on the grey Patek dials than the silver examples. For my money, the 5196P is the most dramatic member of the family, but I strongly encourage you to try both silver/grey and opaline/white dial options in person. With watches of this caliber and the emotional investment involved (to say nothing of the financial expense), the choice is best made with the benefit of hands-on experience. Best, Tim

Calatrava is not Art Deco, it is Bauhaus.
@bighands697 жыл бұрын
Bauhaus was all about stark straight lines and the Calatrava is nothing like that. The funny thing about claimed Bauhaus watches of the era is that they look nothing like the greater Bauhaus movement. Calatrava's look more like an Art Nouveau pocket watch.
@royalclipper53827 жыл бұрын
Watches are not buildings. The case size and shape exemplify the Bauhaus-inspired philosophy that drove Patek Philippe’s early 20th century designs, in which form followed function. The German-rooted Bauhaus art movement, which originated in the early 1900's inspired the design for the Calatrava. The term 'Bauhaus' means 'school of building.' The architecture and engineering of the Calatrava timepieces reflect this philosophy. The result is an avant-garde watch design that showcases lustrous lines and understated sophistication. It personifies refined elegance, equilibrium, and functionality.
