THE SOUND OF HISTORY
To pay tribute to its 175th anniversary, Patek Philippe created a collection of limited-edition commemorative timepieces, and one of them stands out in particular. It is the so far most complicated wristwatch of the eminent family-owned watchmaking companies and decidedly one of the world's most elaborate wristwatches. This is due not only to the number of complications involved but also to the horological degrees of complexity, two of which have been added to the annals of watchmaking for the first time. Moreover, the Grandmaster Chime is the first double-face wristwatch presented by Patek Philippe that can be worn with either dial facing up: the one that focuses on the time and the sonnerie, the other dedicated to the full instantaneous perpetual calendar. Changing the face is very simple thanks to the ingenious reversing mechanism in the lugs. It is amazingly easy to operate and firmly secures the case in the selected position. Incidentally, the information for which a watch is most frequently consulted - the current time and the date - is displayed on both dials. The ultimate in user-friendliness and safety is assured with intelligent mechanisms that prevent potentially damaging manipulations and thus reliably protect the highly complex movement with its intricate cosmos of tiny parts.
Patek Philippe's Grandmaster Chime is a wrist-format timekeeping instrument of absolutely unprecedented complexity and ingenuity that establishes new benchmarks in terms of technical and aesthetic elegance. Its double-face case with a diameter of 47 mm, it accommodates four spring barrels and no fewer than 20 complications, including coveted functions such as a Grande and Petite Sonnerie, a minute repeater, an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display, a second time zone, and two patented global debuts in the domain of chiming watches: an acoustic alarm that strikes the alarm time and a date repeater that sounds the date on demand.

Might take a few months. I've been to their museum and the curator said some of the most complex ones they make involved over a YEAR of design and assembly. And then they sell them for a million bucks... The museum also has Rudyard Kipling's pocket watch!

Artwork like this goes even deeper than the physical beauty: an approach towards perfection that is ridiculously over the top to such a degree would not be possible without passion, and if that type of passion does not characterize the human experience, I don't know what does. As a researcher involved in QA/QC protocol development, I have always wondered how Patek tests something like this. Certain functions of this watch practically require an astrophysicist to explain them...Neil degrass Tyson could narrate a movie dedicated solely to the various things this watch can do & why certain complications were used as they were. There are so many individual components on that watch that they could spend their next 175 years testing it!

In case anyone is wondering: The Patek Philippe Grand Master Chime ref. 5175R will be a limited edition of seven pieces, with one residing in the Patek Philippe museum in Geneva. The other six will be priced at 2.5 million Swiss Francs (approximately $2.6 million at time of publishing).

Everyone loves art. Whether it transforming someone’s trash to mold a masterpiece or painting a Sistine chapel. This is as beautiful to me as the Sistine chapel is to some because of the art. Will I ever own one? Yeah right. I’m a civil engineer by trade and love to see how things work. I build roads and bridges that are on a different scale obviously but how they work is what makes me tick. I’ll never understand how this piece of art “works”. But damn it’s beautiful

I LOVE this time piece. It is wonderful to see a watch that wouldn't look like I was wearing a child's tiny little wrist watch. Heck, my wrest measures 9" around and I am very tall compared to the "average" 5'9" U.S. male - I was that size in junior high at 12 years old. Now, if I could just figure out how to pay for this beauty and be high enough of the list that they would even sell it to me.....:/
