Totally understand his statement about buying watches to mark events in ones life. I dreamed forever to be a police officer. About seven years into the job I was doing well and working on a special crime team task force. I looked around and said, "I've made it." That was in 1992 and to commemorate that moment, I bought a submariner that I still wear today, and love. After 30 years of an awesome career I retired as a lieutenant. I had accomplished everything I wanted to do in law enforcement. I commemorated that with my brother who also retired with 30 years in law enforcement. No sarcasm at all. You're right about the notion that he used simple statements to explain the hobby of collecting. The interview did lack the fundamental details of how the machine works. But there is no need to do that. It's a somewhat emotional interview about watch collecting. We don't need to bring the physics and mathematics into play regarding exactly how each complication works. There are plenty of certified master licensed watchmakers that do that. Maybe my comment was slightly over the top. But try to remember what the title of the video is. It essentially deals with the joys, pleasures and appreciation in collecting these complex machines that take years to design and produce. Again, he really is a smart and talented nice person deserving his success. At least we agree on that.

I think it largely depends on how you approach the sale. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sylvester Stallone approached Patek to let them know he would be selling the watch and sort of asked for permission/forgiveness. Maybe he's fallen out of love with the piece, maybe he needs the money. There's lots of reasonable explanations for selling this watch but the process should be handled delicately and with respect. The above is a far cry from flipping the watch within months of buying it and not informing Patek that you're looking to let go of it for xyz reason. Person A is probably deprioritised as a client, no longer given access to the most sought after Patek's, but not banned and might have the chance to gain access to the more sought after pieces in the coming years. Person B is banned for life with no opportunity for redemption.

Great video. I love the analogy Sly gives at the beginning about the guy with the cheap watch saying his watch tells the same time as Sly's very expensive watch. Sly goes on to say that watch collecting for him has not been about a watch's ability to tell the time, rather the way each watch marks a time in his life and his watch collecting journey. Such a salient point; I've always taken joy in my modest collection and thought about them in the same manner. It's the emotion and backstory that goes with each watch.

Sad to see a Grandmaster Chime not even removed from the bag. Watches are meant to be worn, even a 2-3 million dollar watch. Fact he wanted to keep it in the bag shows that maximizing value and flipping was his only aim. I would say the fact its still in the wrapper tells me its not a Sylvester Stallone watch because he never even wore it. Might has well rip that name tag off the box. Hopefully the new owner at least gets it out of the stupid bag.

It never belonged to him, just like it never belonged to the auctioneer. They just held it until its real owner own day would make use of it. Makes him look quite money seeking - opposite of true wealth the watch is meant to represent

Hi Mr. Stallone, I own a Timex watch that does nothing else other than telling the time. Oh, it has Indiglo which allows you to see the time in the dark. I wear it whenever I leave my home. I often dreamed of having a nice watch (something in the $200 range), but if you would like to have my watch, I wouldn't mind passing it on to you to enjoy. You could wear this watch and when people see it on your wrist they would think "Oh, that's not Sly, the guy wearing that Timex is broke". 😂

I get it, he’s 70 years old. I’m in my early 50s and have started consolidating my watch collection - mostly because I don’t want them (the watches) to be a burden to my family if something should happen to me. At least I can sell some of them now, and make sure I am getting fair prices - rather than my wife get ripped off by some shark after I’m gone.

Sly has two of the brands in the holy trinity. He also has the holy grail of PP. While I'm throwing around religious terms, he has also violated the first two commandments of PP. 8:00 This is why I can't stand junkie collectors. I understand that a wealthy watch collector would want to get his hands on a very expensive and exclusive watch. Why would Stallone spend millions of dollars on "the most complicated wristwatch ever made" only to literally keep it inside a ziplok bag inside of a wooden box, never to be worn, never to be marred by disgusting human fingerprints, never to even be looked uponst by disgusting human eyeballs for years until he resells it to some other rich collector, so the untouched sealed away boxed away watch can spend another 30 years sitting in a dark closet? This is the height of useless, decadent luxury for its own sake. At least wear the goddamn thing even ONCE. Wear it to a movie premiere, wear it to a wedding, do ANYTHING with it except treat it like an untouchable glowing rod of uranium. Sell it to a museum or something so that someone, anyone at all can gain some kind of enjoyment and knowledge out of the damn thing.

So he wrote letters to the board at Patek and they finally let him buy this and he never took it out of the wrapper? So he never wanted to wear it in the first place and the AD should have opened the watch seal, they are not allowed to give it to customers unopened. Many people who really appreciate watches are unable to buy this from Patek, and this jerk weasels one for himself just for the money. Pathetic.
