I used the paternoster rig a lot I would shorten the trace which has the hook on. In your video the fish has enough travel to be on the bottom making it not much better than a bottom bait. I have mine 6 to 10 inches long. My aim is to always have the fish at least 1 foot above the bottom. So the bait is always above the pike head if the pike is on the bottom. I use this method on canals and another water which is 16 foot deep. If on this water I'll have it set up 3 to 6 foot above bottom. The paternoster has had me a lot of pike over the last few years especially if their is a lot of fry about.

Very nice vid! Now I know how the paternoster rig works with live bait, thumps up.

Hi m8, great footage. Two questions. First on is about the lack of up trace. I would not risk to fish a paternoster without an uptrace, the chance of bite off is big, don't you agree? About the underwater filming, same on your last video where it looks like you have been casting to the camera. Do you have them the camera mid water between a float and a lead? Just curious. Keep the great work, it is amazing stuff.

Arnaud Maye hi, to answer your first question there is an up trace just made out of finer wire than the hook trace :). Second I do have the camera set mid water for this video

just a thought' as it was puzzling me for a while aswell why the perch wouldnt take the bait? but was that trace material silver? im sure i see it flashing as the roach moved? try some thiner stuff and defo try get some brown tracewire as itl up you catch rate no end.. lovin the underwater stuff keep it up.

Delkim Dan it was a brown trace wire. I think it was the camera getting shoved in there face that probably put them of haha. Im sure that if the camera wasn't there then one of those perch would've been put on the bank :)

To me it looked like they were only half interested in it, maybe they had eaten recently and were only really tempted when the bait was most active and instinctively chased it. Every time the bait stopped swimming they lost interest sort of like when a cat is toying with a wounded mouse, when the mouse stays still the cat barely pays attention to it but as soon as it makes an attempt to flee they bat at it instantly

I love fishing but I have ethical problems with using live baits. Poor bastards are denied any chance of escape. Imagine if it were you. Its a bit too much like the colaseum.
