Paterson NJ - A look back

I was born and raised in Paterson. Lived on Summer St between 20th ave and Cedar St. As a kid there was so much to do. Played baseball at school 15 field, fished in Pennington Park for carp and catfish, went to thrill shows at Hinchcliff Stadium, ate hot dogs at Falls View Grill. Good memories !

It's actually not too bad today. Yeah there is crime but the majority of patersonians are hard working, decent individuals who are providing for their families and living peaceful lives.

Thanks for the memories. Born in Paterson in 1958. Both parents grew up in Paterson (both from Carroll Street). I grew up on 11th Ave near East Side Park. I remember those steps very well, though I don't remember the greenhouse. I'll have to search your videos for a view of the old School 26. Went to high school in Passaic, at Pope Pius, but still lived in Paterson and our team played its home games at Hinchcliffe. It was quite a city before it became a such a disgusting slum.

Dec 13,2016 Don't know if anyone is still around who can read this, but I am trying. This has been hiding in my computer for more than a year and I thought I would put my 2cents in. I was born in Paterson in 1929 and lived just 2 blocks from Eastside Park; and never sorry for all the years I lived there. My 3 sons went to PS 20 and EHS and none of us ever missed an Eastsde football game. Moved in 1983 to the Blue Ridge Mts.of Virginia. My father was the distributor of the PATERSON EVENING NEWS until the paper was closed when the city began to change...This was a great city, where blacks and whites lived together in harmony where we all depended on one another. There are still a few of us around, and we are proud of having lived in Paterson. Maybe if some of you showed a bit more togetherness, you could bring some of the success of former years back again. Don't you think you could try? LFN

Thanks for posting! My grandparents were married there early 1900's the whole church was Italian even the marriage certificate; I think it was near the courthouse area. (Cianci Street area..?) My two cousins were fire chiefs in Paterson. Was some city years ago!

N.C. to movie to this lovely paterson new jersey the families that live on 12th avenue between straight st,governor st, alburn st all the way to hamilton st by school#6 were all black nice families from 1950 and on this town was so exciting.drill teams, church goers,pool halls, lou casteller grant st pool.house parties, the list goes on.Paterson have a history of so much from all races who live in this wonderful town in the time it was founded,.Thank you for the good memories.

Wow being raised in Paterson to Colombian and Puerto Rican parents in 89 I love looking back at videos like this which hardly exist. Now I'll admit, I got out of Paterson as fast as I could cause now its GHETTO AF and was then especially on River St but it's so hard to find videos of Paterson in the days it was booming with factories and jobs. I'll always have a space in my heart for Paterson but not to live lol.

OMG I just saw the stores at Chamberlain across from St. Gerards Church where I went to Elementry School! I remember a resteraunt there before Rite Aid moved in (then moved out I think it's not there) and I used to eat Gravy and Cheese fries, I forgot the place but it was the spot! Wow! Memories! Sister Jo-Ann if you see this, you are a mean little nun who doesn't have compassion screaming and hitting students and brush your teeth.

The last time I've been to the Fabian Theater was 1990. Thats when I was 5 years old. And the movie I saw was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And that theater was amazing too.

Fortunately I was born in Paterson,~ grew up in "Riverside" next door to school #18. My grandfather had a small candy store & was known for selling lemon ice & goodies. We lived directly across the street from the Riverside Oval. My DAD was "Weegie" a great baseball player. My life was the Oval. Nellie Nero ran it with love & grace. I loved my childhood. Almost all of my dreams take place in "Riverside" Paterson is in my blood.

Paterson ,Clifton, and Passaic mirrored each other in their decline from the glory days of the 40-thru the 80's. I know, because I was born in Passaic, in 1947, and had deep roots in both Passaic and Paterson with family members in politics, and civil service during my youth. I watched the decline start in the 70's with misguided politicians trying to get votes with these visions of grandeur social engeneering projects that were doomed to failure, destroyed the fabric of the landscape, and homogeous neighborhhoods, and invited in a whole new breed of social unrest, and distrust. I had a grandfather with a barbershop on the lower end of Monroe st for 55 years, and local merchants who loved and respected their neighbors, and clientele. I went to #11 school, with deli's, and bakeries, and candy stores, pizza parlors all around. Now due the change in demographics, and influx of people who do not want to assimilate,or respect their host country, it is violent, vile, a haven for drugs, and thugs. It is like Ft Appache, the Bronx. I had a car lot, towing business near 21'st ave in paterson in the 80's, and watched first hand how the main st area morphed into a whole Mile of stores with Arabic signs for an influx of Arab/Muslims, who had no intentions of assimilation, and actually hated our values. It became the headquarters for radicals including Mohammed Atta, and others associated with the 9/11 airplane crashes. My uncle was head of the health dept responsible for overseeing sanitary conditions in public stores, he couldn't stand to go to these places to inspect for health violations. Thank your current, and previous pandering politicians who created this destuction, and who's only hope of winning elections is to suck up to and promise everything to degenerates on the backs of the few legitimate taxpayers left.no wonder decent people are leaving in droves, for a better way of life, and More bang for their buck!

We were SOOOOO lucky to grow up in Paterson. 21st Ave with all Italian stores...and one Jewish man...Michaels 5 and 10 cent store...full of toys!!!! My father owned Campys Italian ice and ice cream store. ..on State St and 21st Ave. D. Campanello..hi everyone!!!!!!!

Wow! My dad used to live here in the 70's, he grew up here with no one but his grandfather to take care of him. ( His dad left him and his mother died) His grandfather died in 1985 when he was 15, he didn't go to a orphanage so he decided to work. His line of work was wrestling for $30 bucks a night, he paid rent for some cheap nasty motel there.

I was born in Paterson, 1952. My mom grew up on Mill street in the 30's. What killed Paterson...The Hy ways, the car. These to entity's drove people to the suburbs after the war when the GI bill was granting all kinds of free-bee's to the returning solder's. There was a huge "brain drain" and a people drain in Paterson. People moved because they could. Other country's don't have the space we do in America so its natural to want to move especially when you had the car and the roads to do it. I guess what I'm saying is we can't blame any ethnic groups or deep dark reasons why Paterson fell. Its just happened because people moved. They moved because they could. I agree is a shame. When I was 6 we moved from Paterson to the burbs just a few miles out of town but it was like a different world back then. So close yet so far. It was " the country". The tax base left Paterson. I think Paterson could come back. Look at the way they treat that historical park by the falls. What a joke. Its maned by half asleep high school kids who could not give a shit about Paterson cause their Parents know nothing of the old Paterson and what Paterson could be. They could make a real tourest attraction out of that park but the money most be going in the politicians pockets. Bring in small tec firms. Lure them with free rent. You have to have a tax base to have a city. You have to have residents who work and contribute to the city and country. You've got to have Business people who get rich making money in Paterson. When folks become rich so do the people who work for them and the newly hired people who come because of the business explosion.....Yes folks.....trickle down, trickle down, trickle down....let that money trickle down to workers who need high paying jobs. Paterson can come back. All we need is a Mayor with balls.

And when they talk about white flight, it’s usually assumed that it was white people escaping the influx of blacks and Latinos, but that wasn’t the case in the beginning. In the 50s and 60s, Paterson was still majority white. All those caucasians who were leaving were actually fleeing other white people.

Born in Paterson in 1945. My older sister Judith was born there in 1942. Lived on 36th, 37th and 38th St. between 19th and 20th Ave. Went to PS 20, than EHS. Left in 1959 at age 14 when my family moved to PA. Went back once just to drive through my old neighborhood. What had been a lovely, safe suburban community was not anymore. Based on what I saw, was not motivated to ever return. And did not.

I can say today that Paterson NJ seems to be making a comeback. Idk about the schools, but it feels like its mostly hardworking immigrants now and barely any natives. I now regularly see older people taking daily walks and kids playing outside.

I think the riots of the 60s killed Paterson, but I am told the decline started even before that. So much history in this small city.

VW GTO hi VW, yeah, once the silk and other industries left Paterson around the turn of the century, it was no longer the booming city it once was. Industrial expansion to the west began a decline as big business sought their fortunes elsewhere.

Agree it has been a very long decline, but in my memory it became a scary place in the late 60s and early 70s.. Of course, everything is relative. I am sure some here think of those years fondly in comparison to today.

A lot of American cities at one time were good place to live and work in. Not so anymore, many cities now look like third World places!!! Abandoned building's, high crime rate, Drug users everywhere, low paying jobs ( which leads to people selling drugs), high murder rate, etc .... I think some of what is going on today was done on purpose to bring America down to a second class power. Having the average American nothing more than a economic slave!! Remember, 85 %of the wealth in America is controlled by just 5% of the population!!
