There are occasions where you will intentionally want to have a lower level skill gem, especially a spirit one. Some builds work better with lower tier skills. There is also no benefit to upgrading a skill VS just creating a new one that is a higher level. Then you can bank the old one for later or another character. The only exception to this would be if you are upgrading a skill gem that you have already improved the quality of. I recently just had to grind a new character 3/4 of the way through act 1 just to get a guaranteed spirit gem. They drop exceptionally rare.

1st big mistake, not having the currency tab... Also telling people to not save their skill gems is bad advice. If you make any other character, you will be happy to have uncut gems ready ion you stash as soon as you level allows it.

Honestly, I feel skill gems drop so frequently right now that you will have no issues with whatever you choose. The smart decision is to level the skills you need and bank the rest for later use whether it be a new character or future changes, but not doing this will not doom you. If anything I would say save the Spirit Gems for the specific ones you need and bank the rest because those feel far more rare

I hope this doesn't hurt the game. I get it that people want to become content creators on "the next big game" and chose PoE. It's just that this game is so complex and if you just started the game making tutorials on it is guaranteed to not have the most accurate information. There are many new players to PoE in general through PoE2 and they will not understand the difference between a person with 4 stash tabs and a person with all affinity tabs. No need to disenchant magic items since you get more than enough magic orbs, but you will never have enough gold. Sell those magic items instead. Always pick up socketed/quality items for salvage and disenchant rares you aren't going to use.

I've never felt the need to buy gear with gold. It just drops for free for me as white items. So I'm constantly running out of orbs of transmutation. Although, if I see an item to buy with gold that has a rune socket or a increased level mod to a skill or increased both percentage and static increase of the same damage type, then I will instabuy those items.

Ill be honest i feel like this guy barely understands the game. Your lvl 8 skill gems can take your lower level gems to level 8. Or make that skill new at lvl 8... and yes gold is hard to come by sell those blues, scrap all sockets and all useless rares. If you don't know if its better open your skill screen or character screen then equip it see if you have more things go up then down. For the ascendancy i feel is the only part he made sense to me and i stopped about half through cause i am a veteran and have some idea what I'm doing

I have another tip for new players, regarding the 300 microtransaction shop coins you have with the EA key. I recommend getting Currency stash tabs and premium stash tabs, there is usually stash tab sale every few weeks/months (-25% iirc). Wait for that moment.

Unused gems that you dont need on your character and put in the stash can be used on any other character you make because it is the same stash between them. Or if worst comes to worst you can just throw your gear and gems in the stash, delete your character, and as soon as you can use it its right there for you plus everything you got going through leveling again. Did it with my merc at like lvl 15 because I decided to do something different. When I started a witch I had gear and gems/support gems before I ever created it. Made leveling to 20 a couple hour process as I just ran through every map.

Saving uncut gems is not a total waste. As someone else mentioned - you may need them for your alt characters. But additionally, you have stat requirements on every skill. When I started using Orb of Lightning I only had enough INT to use level 6 even though my other skills are on Skill Gem XI. I can't upgrade it to higher than 6 until I get more INT first. Therefore, it was pretty handy that I still had level 6 gems in storage for that occasion.

I believe at this point of the game you are safe to pick whatever you want and sounds cool. I don't think all characters are viable for the big boss and the end of maps but any character can get through maps. To get to a point in game where not all characters viable is very far in the end.

You'll be alright. I've seen a few creators mention the "agh you can't change your ascendency!" as if it's a new thing. POE1 was the same. It's inconvenient, and good to know, but also not a crisis. If EA is anything like the EA *and* last 10yrs of POE1, updates will regularly reset your passives. Plus there are timed leagues with the newest content. So even tho your Ascendency won't reset, you'll have free respecs AND likely be rolling new toons to try new stuff. It's a blessing and a curse, I can tell you, as a Standard League Goblin 😅`

But I think they only do that when they change the tree in any way. Which is every 3-4 months as new league’s release. Thats a long time if you’re waiting for it

So, from someone who didnt play a whole lot of PoE. A note that might be helpful to the new folks to PoE 2. If you have a bunch of keys at the end of your ascendancy run, do not pick up some of it and leave and try to come back. There is no warning, but you are unable to go back even if the trial is completed. I had 4 bronze, 2 silver, 1 gold key and I just barely beat it and I did not choose my ascendancy and the quest updates to choose your path on the altar but you cant actually go back and choose it. Essentially you're screwed. Choose ascendancy, get the best inventory load you can, and know that if you leave, thats it. In PoE there is supposedly a warning in lab letting you know you cant go back, they really should add it to this game for the trials as well.

Some of the worsted advice I’ve heard and I’ve only been playing POE games for a week. The stash is account wide for all player made characters. Any mats not used on your 1st play through can be used on a new character if/when you want to make one, so meaning you will be able to spend skill gems on it getting new skills instantly on every level up without having to loot them first.

Hey, every one of these tips videos should talk about saving exalted Orbs and using poe2 trade to get new weapons. I found five exalted early on (btw the drop rate must be 100x what it was in PoE 1). I used those at level 28 to buy a new staff that was 200 DPS compared to my 64 DPS staff I'd been using (which was already decent for my level). I'm crushing content now and think that is the number 1 tip that I've yet to see in any video.

I didnt even notice the little tick on the gem selection window 😅 As for selling gear and gearing overall my suggestion is to sell everything you dont need until like level 10-12 as it will give you enough gold to buy gear from vendors. And vendors do offer some sick items and good bases for later crafts. Later sell white/blue gear and disenchant yellow gear. socketed gear should always be salvaged as it will give you the necessary currency to add sockets to the desired gear piece. Quality gear should also be salvaged for the quality currency. This will make the game much easier as even if you dont change your weapon/armor you can easily do upgrades on it And do not fear using exalted orbs on item you think have good stats for you. Yes, you might brick it but you might also end up with a massive upgrade for the tiny price of 3-4 exalted orbs. And if you are lucky enough you might even create a GG item you can sell for like 100-200 exalts and completely upgrade your character Things to consider for upgrades: If you are melee build look for weapon with % increased physical damage and flat physical damage. Doesnt matter if you are elemental based melee. your damage will come from the conversion of the physical damage... having a weapon with those 2 stats AND the flat elemental type damage added is ideal. it will skyrocket your damage. For your armor look for armors with high defense stat (the one you are stacking... armor/evasion/ES/mix) some flat life and 2x resists. Use the desired defense type runes on the body and fill up missing resists on on helm/boots/gloves. And if you feel like your build is stuck/bricked - check out some build guides. there are many videos and guides that will help get through the nerfs

Yeah early game, disenchant/dismantle socketed items as much as possible. Allows you to get regals to upgrade to rares, artificer orbs to get rune slots, to then use runes to pad resistances or add life. Even getting 20% cold resistance makes a huge difference vs the act 1 boss, for example.

For the record the uncut support gems do tell you if you have a copy of it on your character already but only if they are in your inventory when you activate them. They don't when used from the stash because your allowed to have copies in the stash.

Another point for uncut skill gems. It's very worth having a few lower level gems around in case you change some of your attributes, or find you are running out of mana too fast. Every time you upgrade a gem, the mana cost goes up. If you are having mana problems, the 1% difference might not be worth raising the cost or attribute requirements higher for a time

As a mercenary, I found myself opening myself to Armour/Evasion, Armour, and Evasion armors. Which opened me up to a ton more white items for me to wear and craft on for free, so I chewed through orbs of transmutation from very early on. So if you do the same, you might as well always disenchant even magic (blue) items.

U can save skill gems for new characters, also if u get good bow to drop but u r a sorc, if u are gonna make a new character hold on to it bc 1 character can farm for another

Yall are missing his point about the skill gems. As someone who didn't play 1 hardcore like I plan to play 2, I expected to require level 1-8 gems to level a skill, but realized quickly I can just pop a level 5 gem into a fresh skill. That's what he means by don't bother saving them for your character. Absolutely save them for new characters. He did phrase it fairly definitive though, so points off for presentation.

save your uncut skill gems turn them into gems, then corrupt them (you may get an extra socket for free)

@@robvanhal3356 basic skill has 2 empty socekts. Give it 1x Lesser Jewell Orb and it becomes 3. Then you can use a vaal orb to get another socket so 4 ... BUT vaal can do multiple things to the item and the chances to get +1socket are pretty low, it also locks the item from any future upgrade (you can still level it up tho)

Its easy enough to level another character if you don't like your ascendancy.. you can buy more char slots as well they're pretty cheap. I'd like to have 1 of each (to be 36 I believe) and focus one (either convert or new slot) to whatever season is happening. (if poe2 seasons require reroll). I'm an altaholic and considering it's early access recently released.. you can get to lvl 22 or whatever level you need to succeed the first trial pretty easily. also.. yeah it's good to save up money but also, the game is all about farming in general.

The skill gems can be usefully when useing the Vaal orb on them. you make a lower level Skill of what you have already so you dont burn your good one.

The +1 chain and bind on the merc ballista, freezes all the trash mobs and lucky chains stack the rare mobs and lock them down for easy grenade combo. So easy I didn’t even ascend till LV30 or upgrade my weapon since first 3 hours of play

Tip for money in early game: pick up white gear for selling, if you pick up blue for selling you have to spend 25coin for identify. I realized i earned a lot faster from selling whites.

Biggest mistake i made was crafting with exaults and regals. Just go to poe trade and find the item you want. I probably wasted 15 exaults or more crafting. For 15 exaults i could have had enough gear to clear the campaign no problem
