You know Dave, I have a lot of people to thank for my career as a chef but interesting enough I have you to thank at the end of the day. Back when I was a 12-13 y/o boy I found the Journal of the Yurt series and your cooking journals such as the hardtack and the fried squirrel recipes got me interested in outdoor cooking. This eventually grew into everyday cooking which eventually plunged me into my career as a chef. Even if you weren't intending to be a culinary instructor, thank you for being a great teacher to me all these years. The preparedness and self reliance mentality helped me all throughout my teenage years and now that I am an adult making my own money and own schedule, I now have the time to rediscover my passion for the outdoors and am preparing to hike the PCT (or a portion of it at least)! Again, not to sound all sappy, but thank you for being a great teacher to me and a whole generation of young people 🙏.

You should make and sell an outdoor cooking recipe book. Your outdoor cooking products are fantastic, and you have a lot of videos with clever ideas and recipes. All that's missing is a compilation of all of your cooking knowledge.

You've inspired me to make my own dried potatoes for camping! Roast them in the oven, or steam them, then grate the cooked potatoes. Place them In the food drier until crispy dry. You can dry them on lowest setting in oven, 135°F if you don't have a food drier. It's another pre-made item for camping, along with Pancake mix which can be bought with eggs already in them. Make them thinner and you have crepes to wrap around sweet or savory left overs. Course if you have left over flat beer you use that the night before in a soak with the Pancake mix to make pretty darn close to authentic crepes! Eggs added just makes them all the better. Those if not washed from fresh layed eggs with hold up a long time without refrigeration. Just put the eggs with shells in a baggie inside one of your nestled tins for safe travel. Beacon and steak are two must haves for camping, but chicken breast makes killer stir fries. Onion, which can also be dried like the potatoes,, a few carrots and celery with green pepper are my preferred take alongs for back packing. I really like your bag with the assoerted tins set up! Green pepper dries up really well too in the food drier. Anything else could be foraged, caught. But those carrots, steak, fresh green pepper, and celery make a mean shiskabob if you want to make biscuits or flat bread with that skillet!

@@chriscleveland203 if you’re in to the outdoors (I’m assuming you are since you’re in this comment section), then you may wanna check out Bernheim Forest in Clermont, Freeman Lake in Etown, or Iroquois Park in the south Louisville area. I’d personally recommend Bernheim, as it has everything the other two parks have as well as a canopy walkout AND the Bernheim Forest Giants (check it out online, especially if you have kids. They’ll love it.) and is usually pretty uncrowded. Free during the week, $5 per car on the weekends (unless you have an annual membership) when I last checked. Welcome to the area! Edit: and of course you won’t be too far north of Mammoth Cave National Park! The others can be an evening or weekend trip depending on how thoroughly you want to explore, but MCNP has bike trails, tent and RV camping, tours in the caves… all sorts of cool stuff!

Nice! I'm really looking forward to this series, Dave! I scored an Australian Bedourie camp oven recently and look forward to experimenting with it, as it is made of spun carbon steel vs. cast iron. I got it not only for the lighter weight, but it is more durable than cast iron if it gets dropped or banged around on my overlanding trips in the Rocky Mountains. If you aren't planning on anything with such cookware, maybe it is something to think about?

Ive spent long periods of time in cabins , building fences, carried salt bacon , parched corn jerkey , canned goods , dried beans, I carried my pistols while building fence , killed wild game , fished , for fresh fish . Coffee , teas , kool-aid. After I came home, I didn't want to be around anyone for several years. Id listened to old-school people how they caught wild fowl too without traps . Potatoes age well in camps , I was always looking for wild fruits and foods , to save my supplies . BBQ sause is always welcome around cabins too . Id get hotsause by the gallons .
