I typically play a rogue in my group's campaigns, and they always assume that my character is a thief or pickpocket. Our last campaign, I built my character up as an escape artist. They were neutral good with lots of feats and skills dedicated to getting out or away from dangers. I played my character as someone who would hire themselves out as a sort of guide to groups heading into unknown and potentially dangerous areas. My character had very little combat capability and therefore always tried to avoid a fight or figure out the best avenue to get away from a fight or pursuers. However, the meta aspect of the game always led my other group members into believing that my character was just trying to wait for an advantageous time to steal their valuables. They would ask me to steal something from an NPC or assassinate them, and they would get upset when I'd say no. There would always be someone saying something like, "That's what you do. You're a rogue aren't you?" I'd constantly reply with, "I'm not a thief", and everyone would just kind of sarcastically laugh. I like my characters to be problem solvers and not just thieves, thugs, or assassins.

Well; to be fair, a rogue is generally (not only for Pathfinder...) considered to be involved in shady business, and quite often chaotically aligned. - There is even a "problem solver" class , who mostly gives up on the Rogue Sneak Attack/Evasion/Uncanny, for a plethora of both civil and combat gadgets, including alchemy: The Investigator. More the Sherlock/Mc Gyver type than your run-of-the-mill petty criminal, but still with extremely good connections to the underworld, and even more so a skill monkey.

The most fun I had with a pathfinder rogue was a half-elf who used a greatsword. This is by no means optimized but it was fun to roll 3d6 at level 1 and adding strength and a half to damage. Personally I say it was worth the martial weapons proficiency feat. Not many goblins, kobolds or low level bandits walked away from his sneak attacks.

My favorite rouge I've ever played was Kyra the unwise, she was known for her unpredictable fighting style and testing what magic items did by equipping them and seeing what happens. She aquired a number of curses in her lifetime (one willingly) and was almost possessed by a major antagonist but in the end she was still only the second most interesting character at the table.

Nice guide! The feat chain Combat Expertise > Improved Feint > Greater Feint is really so useful. Especially greater feint imho. With Improved you get one sneak attack from your feint, with Greater you get the full round action of attacks, which gets to be a lot with a dual-wielding rogue at higher levels. Oh, and Unchained Rogue all the way.

I would personally add Undine to the recommended races since they also have a racial spell which can bull rush an enemy if someone gets too close so you can retreat to a better location edit: (without letting the enemy get an attack of opportunity, but this can only be used once per day)
@tharricktakull58336 жыл бұрын
I am actually thinking making a half-elf fighter/rogue in a future pathfinder campaign. He will have the ancestral arms (falcata) & also a buckler. His first level feat will be Shield Focus & his bonus feat will be Weapon Focus (Falcata).

even if you are a kelpto Rogue, stealing from your party is stupid, those are the guys who keep you breathing in the dungeon so you can get all that sweet sweet money, seriously even a Chaotic Evil Rogue should be smart enough not to shit in the nest as it where
@Confused_Cape_Goose7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, stealing from your party is just stupid and it annoys your friends IRL as well. At least when rogues try to steal from shops and such, it actually leads to some funny scenes.

Half orc Rogue. it sounds odd but with the bonus to intimidate and high Charisma, it is very possible to simply scare your way out of some situations. plus one turn to do something in the case that something takes you down without outright killing you with orc ferocity is very useful in cases where you happen to get into a bad situation.

I hate to be "that guy" but you didn't mention that the rouge also gets the sneak attack bonus when flanking.
@Sonicmixer857 жыл бұрын
J. R. One of players in my game last night forgot about this. Flanking is probably the easiest way to get your Sneak Attack, especially when a lot of combats last longer than 1 turn. Feint is ok at this, but not ideal.
@d6damage937 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I should have mentioned it. But flanking opportunities depend on party make-up to a certain extent. If a party comprises a lot of ranged fighters or classes that don't do well in up close and personal fights it can limit flanking opportunities.
@Sonicmixer857 жыл бұрын
D6Damage That is true, I guess I've always taken party composition for granted when regarding Rogues. Barbarians, Fighters and Paladins (not to mention summons) always seem to be popular in groups I've played with.

Can you do one on Create Soul Gem spell and how to make sure you don't go overboard with stealing and destroying souls?
@d6damage937 жыл бұрын
The create soul gem spell and taking souls in general is a complicated topic. The main purpose of the create soul gem spell seems to be preventing the use of resurrection. It's kind of more an enemy npc thing than a player thing. If you're interested in trapping souls for your own dark purposes, I recommend trap the soul. The difficulty is that it is a much higher level spell. Create soul gem is a good lower level alternative to that though.

John Gotti unchained is fantastic. If your GM allows it, do it. If you are the GM, encourage all of your rogues to go unchained. The monks and barbarians will probably appreciate it also. Unchained will also let you un-ban the summoner 😀

I would actually say, since you're getting 8 skills ranks per level anyway, you should really down prioritize intelligence in return for perhaps a bit more con or wis to help those poor saves.
@d6damage937 жыл бұрын
You have a good argument with the con, however, the relatively small bonus you'll get by putting points into wisdom won't help you will save significantly enough to be worth the investment, in my opinion.

@smile-tl9in7 жыл бұрын
unfortunatly the rogue is kinda underpowered. Pathfinder is full or classes that are better skillmonkey, or just as good skillmonkey but are better in combat , or both, and still have the flair of a rogue-ish character (wich i identify as an charcter who use his charm,wits, cunning or agility to solve his problems). Traps can be nasty but a good perception rank is generally enough to detect the non-magical ones. Add a trait or a party member that can use detect magic and you can detect any magical ones. Afterward you can avoid it or set it off at distance in the majority of cases. Just summon a rat. If you're in a campaign where you will find traps that will rise an alarm as an effect and you have to stay discret, then you will need disable device ranks. Or someone who can cast animate objects. For locked door, cast silence on it and let the barbarian enfonce it and cast mending/make whole on it ifterwards. You can skip the silence/mending part if stealth doesn't interest you. Or, you know, cast animate object. note that any spells can be cast with the apropriate wand/scroll and ranks in umd. A druid will probably be better at a rogue for scouting. Just wildshape into a dog/can/pigeon/bird/bat depending on where you want to scout. Or a spellcaster can cast clairvoyance/prying eyes. In fact Any class with enough ranks in stealth is enough. And some of them have hide in plain sight. Any class with lots of skill ranks, lots of use for and high intelligence and a good skill list make a good skillmonkey By the way archeologist bard, slayer, investigator, empiricist alchemist(i am not sure on the name of the archetype on that one) have all the trapfinding class feature and are better in-combat A bard is way better if you look for a charming character
