That's a good idea, it reminds me from my Army days during bivouac, but our shelter haves only had 6 inches of over lap. Keep up the good work and God bless

Great vid as usual mate. Grandparents taught us that trick & have been using it for years. It creates airflow, prevent condensation & control heat inside the tent when using a stove/heater. Cowabunga.!
@jessesimenson2862 жыл бұрын
You should show this new tarp in a super shelter configuration. With the tarp overlap, you've solved the heat escaping problem. Maybe with a dyema tarp, painters drop cloth, or a shower curtain. Kudos! Always have loved your content.

Awesome video Dave. I'm a fan of old school gear as well, it's something that brings back that frontier/civil war/mountain man feeling. I just absolutely love traditional gear!!!

Great idea. Also make guy line points on the other side. Makes one tarp even more versatile and gives the possibility to make walls in the configuration you have devised. Which gives the tent more height in the middle and useful living space on the sides. However, the opening at the front and back remains.... I use the Bushcraft Spain tarp. Based on Nesmuk but adapted to our body length. I compensate for the weight by not using a backpack. I fold the tarp into a backpack on a frame. I usually set up the tarp as a low A-frame with one side open. Big enough for 1 person. Use a German army tarp (Zeldbahn) to close one side if necessary. A fire for the other side. Or burn 4 swiss candles in a bush box with a rock inside as heating at night. With a wool blanket, of course. Incl. cooking gear and water filtering system (brown mailbag), rubber mat, spare clothing etc. but exl. food and water (in canteen and haversack) about 15 kg. Bom prove!

Seems that having the overlaid peaks from each side would also create a rudimentary ridge vent as well. Maybe good for condensation control.

One needn’t be a large human being to be a giant, fortunately. Dave is plenty big enough-if he was 6’5” and 265 I don’t know if the world could handle it. There is probably a good reason the universe didn’t do that. Of course I’m mostly just kidding.

Great job guys. I love it. It’s very logical and one of my favs. I have a custom oilcloth canvas 8x8 that has 21 tie out loops. But now you have me wanting to add more loops to the other side after ordering one of these and matching up some added loops on a couple sides to line up perfectly with one of these to add some super flexible larger shelter options. Really like this.

I do very little hiking and camping anymore where getting to base camp is done on foot. I have a 4 wheeler and I pack the $h!t out of it for my trip to base camp. I either haversack it from there or use a Helikon-TEX Foxtrot MK2 Belt Rig Suspension Harness, sometimes with a Numbat. I appreciate the attempts to be creative with minimizing weight, but it isn't a concern i have these days. It is amazing how much I can pack on and in my Polaris 4 wheeler. I can camp like a King for about a week easily, miles from the fray of life. One of it's biggest benefits is the ability to carry a _serious_ amount of water which is useful if one is high up in the mountains where water isn't always so easy to come by. I still keep things relatively minimal, but I can carry the luxuries - an axe, a saw, a short shovel, firearms and ammo, substantial food, big tarps, rope, big sleeping bags, etc. Winter camping is no longer an issue for me. I have a new trick that keeps me warm and comfortable in the coldest temps my area ever offers. How about doing a 4 wheeler camping trip packout sometime? Not a side-by-side. A real 4 wheeler . It would be fun to see you unpack your machine and then see a camera shot of the luxury-filled base camp you would likely be able to put together with that in mind.

I would recommend adding a loop on each end of the Ridgeline for a Prussik pullout to hold tension and a loop to pull out the sidewalls to take up the sag there
@godlydevil12 жыл бұрын
The only change I would sew into this tarp to improve: Sew in another loop at the end of each tarp 1 foot in from the "2 foot overlap" to stick a pole (taken from the environment or an actual tent pole) in case no convenient trees around to hang a ridge line and to pull a couple to tent pole lines to pull tight staked into the ground.

Very nice. I enjoy it when you guys put your heads together and come up with ideas like this! I can see this working for people on a backcountry trip who want the durability of old-school gear but can divide up the weight like on a canoe trip or deep into the mountains. Great concept! But for me, I will stick with my DD Tarp (10x10) due to the weight. I could handle humping half of that tarp system if I had a willing partner to do the same. Could you show more setup configurations with this setup, please? I think that would help in seeing it as a viable option. IMHO. Thanks for doing another video, Dave. I really enjoy your cooking videos as well. I have been saving them and trying them at my leisure. Great stuff!!!🙂

@kbbjedi2 жыл бұрын
Maybe add a loop where the center would be after joining. So you can stretch the tarps taught length wise across the ridge line?
@UserFormelyKnownAs_hjkh2 жыл бұрын
I could go for a single loop at the outside edges of each tarp (2 more loops per tarp) at the 1 foot mark so this could be tensioned on a ridge line

I like the way you guys think when you bounce ideas back and forth. Atta boys all around to each of you. An observation, and a suggestion: Observation is that the shelter half idea was originated in the American Civil War. A piece of canvas an end pole per man. It supported the buddy-system, which increases your probability of surviving. Suggestion is to experiment with only a 1 foot overlap. Two feet seems like too much. I’d bet dollars to donuts that the one foot over lap, bending over a ridge line, is more than enough. That simple change will yield a 10’X10’ tarp. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Add another set of tie offs 2’ foot from those and it will allow more versatility with just the one tarp and would also allow a tarp to be connected to the other side just the same if more than two tarps were available.

As a synthetic tarp guy, my ignorance might come shining through with this question, but, assuming oilskin tarps don't have a top and a bottom (i.e., they are reversible), why do you need the auxiliary row of loops on both sides? Wouldn't you just flip the second tarp over when you lay it on the first one? lol, asking for a friend.
