Great review man. You've come a long long way since your DOS2 videos a few years back. You're more focused with your topics and concise with your speech. Your video titles set a clear expectation of what you're going to cover; and the content consistently meets these expectations without tangents or filler. And you don't resort to clickbait. You just thoroughly reviewed a massive game in under 20 minutes. Having completed WoTR recently and started a second and third playthrough going down two Evil Mythic Paths completely opposite of my Chaotic Good Azata run, I feel like there a lot of things about WoTR that are significantly better than Kingmaker, yet I am not 100% certain it takes the throne--pun intended. Going to try and keep this as spoiler free as possible. For starters, while there are nine Mythic Paths in all, I feel like the game truly has three to five separate runs worth replaying the game solely for those paths alone: (1) Azata/Angel being kind of indistinguishable from one another as being "the Good path;" (2) the Aeon path for a more "netural" cosmic order path where you can get some companions not available to you on the Good route; (3) the Lich path for even more companions (and a variation of a very, very late-game companion;) (4) the Swarm that Walks if you just want to see how evil you can get and make everyone miserable; (5) everything else kind of blends in together being indistinguishable because they are underwhelming and/or available only in the final act, so it seems more like a tangent than an entire new playthrough (the Demon is the only exception here.) Compared to Kingmaker, which kind of simplified the whole alignment system into Good and Evil choices for major decisions and Lawful and Chaotic kingdoms, I think it's fair to say that WoTR gives the most value on replaying the game for new things. However, that being said, I do think the alignment system suffers a lot more than Kingmaker because the story is written as if you were a savior/hero. The brilliance of Kingmaker's story was that you were shaping a kingdom however you wanted to achieve the political gains of your benefactor, so the story didn't have to care so much about how you achieved that goal. It simply wanted you to invest into your kingdom whether for honor, power, selflessness, etc. and that let the alignment system shine. However, I've only replayed Act 1 and 2 on my second and third character, but I do like how you can do a lot of evil actions amidst the turmoil of Kenebras and it still makes sense because it's during a massive war distracting everyone's attention away from your misdeeds. Putting an evil character at the head of your crusade, especially one displaying demonic powers, just seems too far-fetched for me to take it seriously, and even more so when you become a Lich. The other issues that I have with WoTR are more mechanical/gameplay focused, which further highlights how one-sided the alignment system is here, so it doesn't need much explanation. Things like the overabundance of Chaotic and Evil enemies; the repetitiveness of the demon armies towards the last third of the game; the lack of any sense in progression from enemy types that helps you get better at the game (ex. the trolls in Kingmaker helping you understand how regeneration works.) I'm not as bothered about these issues as the other ones because that's part of the Adventure Path itself. I'm more concerned with other issues like how rushed the final act of WoTR is compared to Kingmaker, how unbalanced some of those final encounters are even on Normal difficulty, and how absolutely bonkers the "secret" ending requirements are even compared to the likes of Kingmaker--and yet I somehow could not obtain it even knowing what to do--but I got an okay ending to the game regardless. If I gave scores, Act 1 - 4 would be a solid 10/10; Acts 5 and 6 really brought it down to a 9. There was only one "dungeon" that I liked from that final section of the game.
@SpartanWolf2223 жыл бұрын
The best thing I can say about WoTR though is that it got me out of the comfort zone of being a basic class character.

I was never really to fussed with Kingmaker but am really interested in this game and have heard many good things about it. I will be waiting a while before I buy however to allow them to fix bugs and more importantly because I dont have the time to play it atm and by the time I do it will likely be cheaper anyway. Interesting you say its cheaper than usual in your region as here (UK) its over full price for a game. Usually a game is 40 pounds here although some do try and push it especially digitally but this is priced at 43 for standard edition.

Resisted buying previous pf games, so many said it's overly complicated if you aren't used to the rules. Saw this in sale and figured it was worth the risk at the price. They aren't wrong, there are a lot of complexities. Kind of wish there was a skill tree to help with understanding how to get some of the later feats and which ones might be blocked later behind class restrictions so I'm not having to constantly redo the toon. But I do find it a great game, feel like they could have offered you a way to delegate the crusade more so everything isn't so hands on, feels like they out 3 different games into this, one exception org with two more squeezed in that slow down and lose the since of urgency of the main quest. Overall really happy though more then enough game for the money, just a lot to learn and it's not always obvious where you might have messed up until it's to late

As someone who is familiar with the setting, but not the actual adventure path: I have a small story question (so minor spoiler to other readers, maybe): . . . . . . Do the Low Templars appear in this story, and if so, would it be plausible to play one as your main character? I don't need to know what there role is in the story (if, indeed, they appear), but they represent a character concept I always thought would be cool for that Adventure Path - so I'm wondering if I could play one in this game. I hope that was phrased as spoiler free as possible.

I really couldn't find much info on the prestige class so maybe it's something they didn't have the rights for but they sound very much like the Condemned, which are crusaders that broke laws and where sentence to serve in the crusade. So there is mention about those in the story, but like Marcelo said you can prob do something with a mix of class to make something like one. Kind of sound like a mix of a Slayer/hunter/Ranger and Cav with a little Rogue thrown in.

I'm you got a copy you're the only youtuber I *really* trust that has a review up yet. Do mythic paths make the game easier? I found a good balance in Kingmaker so I'm wondering if I'll need to adjust. I'll probably never beat Kingmaker though, sadly, since I lost my 100+hr save to a SSD wipe.
@MortismalGaming3 жыл бұрын
Oof but also the mythic paths are balanced by much stronger enemies, so even though you will definitely have more power so do they

Idk if I missed it but is this only Real-Time with Pause or does it have the turn based feature from the previous entry?

This was a long time coming. I feel like I've been watching your coverage of this title for at least a year, haha. Glad everything turned out well for WotR and Owlcat~! About the bugs, its always a shame when a product ships with bugs, but I think at this point it's to be expected. As long as the bugs aren't egregious - as they were in the 1.0 for Kingmaker - the developers get a pass from me. I'm glad you covered this point in your review. How long is a typical playthrough of the campaign? Not that this is the sort of thing that normally goes into a review. I'm more just trying to see how many evenings I should budget for this once I pick it up. lol

Did anyone have trouble with fps today on launch? Getting like 40-55 fps on a decent rig, it makes me sad that no reviews have mentioned this.

If it happened after a few hours each time that's a common unity problem

Are the enemies damage sponges like in Kingmaker? And are Boss fights designed around real time with pause?

is the scenery more changing than kingmaker? i tried to finish the game so often but i allways felt like the 1st 30-40ish hours all used the same tileset with simiilar enemys, which bored me so much that i allways stopped playing, couse it felt like nothing was happening for ages

Hey man, do you have any sort of video going into the advantages/disadvantages of multiclassing? I feel like I'm studying for a final exam when trying to learn Pathfinder's classes/archtypes, and swimming around in forums/subreddits only made that double. Seeing builds that benefit from multiclassing to a substantial degree, or others that aren't worth taking full advantage of after a point is really blowing my brain box apart. From a 5e background, I always thought multiclassing was the big "no-no", and after playing Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, it makes me leery in most cases from losing out on capstone abilities.

Well I have videos on every class and it's mechanics, there's not one catch all answer for you though, it rest just comes down to figuring what class features and things you can stack effectively

Can somebody tell me about the "Devil" mythic path? i have seen it in the wiki but theres no info there, i also read on reddit that its kind of like swarm/gold dragon/legend where u have to pick a certain mythic paths early on that transform to those late game mythic paths, i wanted to know whether it is confirmed or not, whether its coming with the full release or will it be some kind of DLC. PS i also wanted to know whether or not you can turn off the Lich pet/familiar, i kinda like it but for immersion sake i hate walking around with a dead corpse especially out of combat

Have a few hours in it. It is miles better than kingmaker. I was bit overwhelmed at the character generation part, so many options. So far I am really impressed, I find i am actually reading the text and following along instead of Skip, Skip. The only annoying thing so far is I think a bit of a better tutorial on how to put items on the action bar. It took me way too long to figure that out. It was easy once I got it, but not very intuitive, I was used to dragging and dropping from the inventory.

So if I wanted to chose the Gold Dragon path, I'd have to use one of the early game paths for a large chunk of the game? That's a bit of a bummer.

@@MortismalGaming Thanks for the reply! How's the story though in terms of depth, believability, originality, presentation, etc.? Is it bland old good vs. evil told through cliches? Is it a smart reimagination? Is it truly original? Clever? If it were a book, would you recommend it?

@@un1qu3identif1er it's actually six ttrpg books converted into a video game lol subjective points aside I enjoyed it and found it unique. There's parts where you wind up in more fantastical places, there's a bit of mystery to unravel and things aren't always what they appear to be. Combined with all the moving parts that are the mythic paths it's a great time.

Can you already comment on whether playing a certain mythic path will definitely cause companions to leave which disagree with your choice? E.g. can you play a Lich as anything else than purely evil and keep, say, Seelah or other good-aligned companions?

@@MortismalGaming Too bad, but not surprising. I really hoped there would be the option to play "gray" instead of purely black and white, but maybe that would have been to much to implement.
